Black History Month with a Programme of Free Events and Tours
September 2015 IWM marks Black History Month with a programme of Free Events and Tours Visitors to the Imperial War Museums this October can discover more about the role of the black community at home and on the fighting front, from the First World War through to the present day. A special screening will be held at IWM London (Sun 25 Oct) of two documentary films held in our collections telling the stories of African and Caribbean men who fought in the Second World War. Each will be introduced by their Directors. Discover the story of Eddie Noble a Jamaican born London resident who served in the RAF in the Second World War – who inspired Andrea Levy’s best-seller Small Island. Find out about the 100,000 African soldiers who fought in Burma and their story of courage and survival in the documentary Burma Boy (1 – 2.30pm). Visitors can see our new display at IWM North −Mixing It: The Changing Faces of Wartime Britain and find out about Peter Thomas, the first Nigerian pilot to serve with the RAF. Join us for a series of interactive talks at IWM London where expert historians will reveal through the moving personal accounts held in IWM’s collections what it was like for black servicemen to serve during the First and Second World Wars. Historian Stephen Bourne’s talk Black Poppies (31 October, 1pm) will be accompanied by a free display telling stories of Britain’s Black Community during the First World War. Hear the voices and stories of those who served in the West India Regiment in Palestine during the First World War in historian Tony Warner’s talk (1 November, 11.30am) and in the afternoon (2.30pm) Warner will reveal the experiences of black pilots and troops who fought in the Second World War. -

Pendjari which is situated in the northwest of Benin and measures 4,800 km2. It is an anchoring part of the transnational W-Arly-Pendjari (WAP) complex, spanning a vast 35,000 km2 across three countries: Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger. It is the biggest remaining intact ecosystem in the whole of West Africa and the last refuge for the region’s largest remaining population of elephant and the critically endangered West African lion, of which fewer than 400 adults remain and 100 of which live in Pendjari. Pendjari is also home to cheetah, various antelope species, buffalo, and more than 460 avian species, and is an important wetland. But this globally important reserve has been facing major threats, including poaching, demographic pressure on surrounding land, and exponential resource erosion. But the Benin Government wanted to change this trajectory and chart a different path for this critically important landscape within their borders. In September 2016, after a visit to Akagera National Park in Rwanda, which has been managed by African Parks since 2016, the Benin Director of Heritage and Tourism (APDT) approached African Parks to explore opportunities to revitalise and protect this landscape, and help the Government realise the tourism potential of Pendjari under their national plan “Revealing Benin”. -

Professor Esi Sutherland-Addy is Associate Professor in the Language, Literature and Drama Section at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana. She has served in two ministerial positions, as Deputy Minister for Culture and Tourism, and Higher Education (1986 & 1986-1993 respectively). CJAS Editor-in-Chief speaks with Professor Sutherland-Addy below to reflect on her life, cultural activism and African-African Diasporan relationships. CJAS: Welcome to CJAS and this important conversation about the year of return. Before we go into that, however, could you please tell us a little bit about yourself: your areas of research interest, and family background. We know you are a well- known academic and cultural activist, but you also have two famous parents, a quintessential Pan-African couple. ESA: It’s a privilege to be featured in this rather special manner in the Contemporary Journal of African Studies. Yes I am one of three siblings1 born to two rather extraordinary personalities: Bill Sutherland, an African American social worker and civil rights activist who chose to follow his Pan-African aspirations on the African continent and Efua Sutherland, an educationist, writer and cultural activist born in the land that eventually became known as Ghana, and who became well known as a leading Pan-Africanist creative. The interests and activities of both our parents certainly influenced us in various ways. Perhaps two of these are a consciousness of the power of creativity to influence social development and a critical engagement with Africa. -

Cahill is a senior career diplomat with over 35 years of State Department experience around the world. In West Africa he has served as Counselor of Embassy, Charge d’Affairs and USAID Director. Appointed to represent the U.S. at the United Nations by two Presidents, one of his key duties was liaison with Africa. He has also lectured on economic development throughout Africa for the U.S. government. In 2003 he was part of the Joint U.S. Forces Team that resolved the Liberia crisis. After retirement with protocol rank equivalent of major general, he has continued to work in the State Department, largely in political-military affairs. Since 1999, he has been an adviser to the U.S. Army, focusing on Iraq, the Balkans and Korea. He has served as president of an international foundation and producer of PBS television documentaries. A professor of international management at Pepperdine University, his book on China’ s industry played an important part in building China-US relations. During our trip he will speak on the history and current status of Mali, Senegal and the Gambia, the regional development of West Africa, and the role of Africa in the world today.
