Budapest, 30 June 2020 __________________________ Signature CEU eTD Collection Abstract The history of the Atlantic slave trade and slave heritage are critical subject areas of transnational concern and thematic research. In this study, the necessary details that contribute to local indifference and general disinterest among the public about salient issues concerning indigenous slavery systems—that existed before the arrival of the Europeans—and the transatlantic slave trade at large are untangled. That is, a structured dissemination of partial evidence that was perpetrated and to some extent centrally designed by key actors including: the state, local historians and educational institutions as part of concerted attempts to entrench overarching notions of national cohesion and unity in the face of (re)imagining the Ghana’s colonial past. I contend that what this topic lack is ample/fair representation in the Ghana Education Service’s current teaching curriculum for history in senior high schools. Thus, a continuous minimization or outright silencing of the role played by local agency prevents students from developing nuanced insights into a lived past within Ghana’s national consciousness, in the contemporary imagination and interrogation of the manifold of events that transpired in Atlantic slave trade. Historically relevant sites like Fort William, Anomabo—this thesis’s case study—was explored and can serve as an entry point into this complex history. This study also discovered that, the well-rounded histories of this era filter down to the ‘official’ narratives shared by tour guides to tourists esp. from the African Diaspora who embark on regular heritage tours to the various forts and castles in Ghana. Initially established as a trading center between Africans and Europeans, those interactions soon gave birth to Elmina as a dungeon for holding Africans as slaves for sale into slavery. Williamsburg, a living history museum, is identified as the second colonial capital following the Jamestown settlement. On the eve of the American Revolution its citizens were confronted with questions of freedom, independence, and bondage. While many white settlers fought for independence and freedom from England, they simultaneously embodied slavery and unequal treatment towards enslaved and free African Americans. Today, both Elmina and Williamsburg reflect historical spaces as memory of the past. This thesis explores the ways that contemporary historical interpreters depict Elmina and Williamsburg. Some of the goals of this thesis are to study and analyze the sites‟ contemporary flaws, the sources these flaws, the ways that the histories of these sites are packaged for guests, and to explore how the sites‟ guests are encouraged to re-interpret and identify with the trans-Atlantic slave trade and slavery.

CROIXJ ITS ANTECEDENTS AND IMMEDIATE AFTERMATH INTRODUCTION The slave uprising of 2-3 July 1848 in St. Croix, Danish West Indies, belongs to that splendidly isolated category of Caribbean slave revolts which succeeded if, that is, one defines success in the narrow sense of the legal termination of servitude. The sequence of events can be briefly rehearsed. On the night of Sunday 2 July, signal fires were lit on the estates of western St. Croix, estate bells began to ring and conch shells blown, and by Monday morning, 3 July, some 8000 slaves had converged in front of Frederiksted fort demanding their freedom. In the early hours of Monday morning, the governor general Peter von Scholten, who had only hours before returned from a visit to neighbouring St. Thomas, sum- moned a meeting of his senior advisers in Christiansted (Bass End), the island's capital. Among them was Lt. Capt. Irminger, commander of the Danish West Indian naval station, who urged the use of force, including bombardment from the sea to disperse the insurgents, and the deployment of a detachment of soldiers and marines from his frigate (f)rnen. Von Scholten kept his own counsels. No troops were despatched along the arterial Centreline road and, although he gave Irminger permission to sail around the coast to beleaguered Frederiksted (West End), he went overland himself and arrived in town sometime around 4 p.m.

    August 12, 1991 Ghana Government Denies Existence of Political Prisoners Minister Says Detainees "Safer" in Custody Introduction Ghana's ruling Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), chaired by Flt. Lt. Jerry Rawlings, has claimed -- for the third time in as many years -- that Ghana has no political prisoners. In a radio interview on May 31, Secretary for Foreign Affairs Obed Asamoah, argued that some detainees -- whom he characterized as "subversives" -- are being kept in custody for their own good. He added that if they were brought to trial, they would be convicted and executed. The first claim is deliberately misleading. Africa Watch knows of the existence of a number of detainees incarcerated in Ghana, though it is difficult to estimate the exact number in the light of government denials. One group -- of ten detainees -- was moved to different prisons on the same day -- January 14, 1991. One member of this group is known to have been held without charge or trial since November 1982. Their detentions have never been officially explained. The minister's argument that detainees are better protected in custody amounts to a manifest presumption of guilt, and makes it unlikely that any detainee in Ghana can now receive a fair trial. The government's denial is also contradicted by the publication on May 30 of a list of 76 "political prisoners and other detainees" by the opposition Movement for Freedom and Justice (MFJ). According to the MFJ's information at the time, none of the 76 had been charged or tried. The PNDC Secretary for the Interior, Nana Akuoku Sarpong, has characterized the list as a mixture of "lies and half truths," calculated to discredit the government.

The size of the population and its spatial distribution, growth and change over time, and socio-economic characteristics are all important in development planning. The Kilimanjaro Programme of Action on Population adopted by African countries in 1984 stressed the need for population to be considered as a key factor in the formulation of development strategies and plans. A population census is the most important source of data on the population in a country. It provides information on the size, composition, growth and distribution of the population at the national and sub-national levels. Data from the 2010 Population and Housing Census (PHC) will serve as reference for equitable distribution of resources, government services and the allocation of government funds among various regions and districts for education, health and other social services. The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) is delighted to provide data users with an analytical report on the 2010 PHC at the regional level to facilitate planning and decision-making. This follows the publication of the National Analytical Report in May, 2013 which contained information on the 2010 PHC at the national level with regional comparisons. Conclusions and recommendations from these reports are expected to serve as a basis for improving the quality of life of Ghanaians through evidence-based policy formulation, planning, monitoring and evaluation of developmental goals and intervention programs.

    Development at the border - Appendix A [Not for publication] The alignment of boundaries in colonial times This appendix illustrates the hazards that presided to the alignment of boundaries during colonial times. When referring to pre-colonial political entities, it is worth recalling that even structured kingdoms drew no maps1, and that ethnic groups are historical objects that were at least influenced, if not constructed in some instances, by colonial and post-colonial politics.2 Some kingdoms were com- posed of groups speaking di®erent languages, on a federal basis, like for instance the Gyaman kingdom lying across the present-day Cote d'Ivoire-Ghana border.3 A.1. The border of Cote d'Ivoire with Ghana The border area between Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana stretches from the lagoon regions bordering the Atlantic Ocean to the savannah in the North. We exclude the most northern part of this border where only few survey clusters are close enough to the border, i.e. the Bouna district in Cote d'Ivoire and the northern region in Ghana. On the Cote d'Ivoire side, the southern border area is made up of ¯ve contemporary districts: the "d¶epartements" of Bondoukou, Tanda, Agnibilekrou, Abengourou and Aboisso. This administrative de¯nition of the border region selects survey clusters that are pretty close to the border: they range from 1 to 118 km from the border, with a mean distance of 30 km. On the side of Ghana, the available regional subdivisions provide less details: we are left with two regions, Western and Brong-Ahafo; this latter region extends far from the Cote d'Ivoire border, so that 25% of survey clusters are more than 100 km away from the border, 1Herbst, J.I., 2000.

  • Small and Medium Forest Enterprises in Ghana
    Small and Medium Forest Enterprises in Ghana Small and medium forest enterprises (SMFEs) serve as the main or additional source of income for more than three million Ghanaians and can be broadly categorised into wood forest products, non-wood forest products and forest services. Many of these SMFEs are informal, untaxed and largely invisible within state forest planning and management. Pressure on the forest resource within Ghana is growing, due to both domestic and international demand for forest products and services. The need to improve the sustainability and livelihood contribution of SMFEs has become a policy priority, both in the search for a legal timber export trade within the Voluntary Small and Medium Partnership Agreement (VPA) linked to the European Union Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (EU FLEGT) Action Plan, and in the quest to develop a national Forest Enterprises strategy for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD). This sourcebook aims to shed new light on the multiple SMFE sub-sectors that in Ghana operate within Ghana and the challenges they face. Chapter one presents some characteristics of SMFEs in Ghana. Chapter two presents information on what goes into establishing a small business and the obligations for small businesses and Ghana Government’s initiatives on small enterprises. Chapter three presents profiles of the key SMFE subsectors in Ghana including: akpeteshie (local gin), bamboo and rattan household goods, black pepper, bushmeat, chainsaw lumber, charcoal, chewsticks, cola, community-based ecotourism, essential oils, ginger, honey, medicinal products, mortar and pestles, mushrooms, shea butter, snails, tertiary wood processing and wood carving.

    1 Hypotheses on the Diachronic Development of the Akan Language Group Emmanuel Nicholas Abakah, Department of Akan-Nzema, University of Education, Winneba [email protected] Cell: +233 244 732 172 Abstract Historical linguists have already established the constituent varieties of the Akan language group as well as their relationships with other languages. What remains to be done is to reconstruct the Proto- Akan forms and this is what this paper sets out to accomplish. One remarkable observation about language is that languages change through time. This is not to obscure the fact that it is at least conceivable that language could remain unchanged over time, as is the case with some other human institutions e.g. various taboos in some cultures or the value of smile as a nonverbal signal. Be that as it may, the mutually comprehensible varieties of the codes that constitute the Akan language group have evidently undergone some changes over the course of time. However, they lack adequate written material that can take us far back into the history of the Akan language to enable any diachronic or historical linguist to determine hypotheses on their development. Besides, if empirical data from the sister Kwa languages or from the other daughters of the Niger-Congo parent language were readily available, then the reconstruction of the Proto-Akan forms would be quite straightforward. But, unfortunately, these are also hard to come by, at least, for the moment. Nevertheless, to reconstruct a *proto-language, historical linguists have set up a number of methods, which include the comparative method, internal reconstruction, language universals and linguistic typology among others.
