Das Buch des Jiddisten Jan Schwarz ist eine wichtige Sammlung von zwischen 2004 und 2013 bereits publizierten Aufsätzen vor allem über die jiddische Lite- ratur der Nach-Schoah-Zeit, welche von überlebenden osteuropäischen Auto- ren in Polen und danach in der Emigration sowie von den in den USA leben- den Schriftstellern geschaffen wurde. Hauptinteresse des Autors gilt deren literarischer Produktion in Prosa und Lyrik sowie Autobiographien, Erinne- rungen und Lebensberichten der Opfer und Zeugen des Zweiten Weltkriegs, darunter vornehmlich Literaten. Der Autor, früher in den USA, jetzt in Lund (Schweden) als Associate Professor lehrend, wendet sich an ein Publikum, das, für unsere Zeit typisch, des Jiddischen nicht mehr mächtig bzw. mit der jid- dischen Kultur wenig vertraut ist. Dieser Zielsetzung zum Trotz, ist das Buch keine bloße Einführung in die jiddische Literaturszene, sondern vielfach eine tiefgehende Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk von Autoren wie unter ande- ren Abraham Sutzkever, Kadya Molodovsky, H. Leivick, Chava Rosenfarb, Aaron Zeitlin, Yankev Glatshteyn, Elie Wiesel, Leib Rochman, Chaim Grade oder Isaak Bashevis Singer. Schwarz zeichnet die letzte Blüte transnationaler Entwicklung ab 1945 nach, von einer in der Zeit der Klassiker zukunftsorientierten, lebendigen jiddischen Kultur bis hin zu deren Niedergang. Geprägt durch deren letzten großen Protagonisten, Jizchok Leib Peretz in Warschau, der 1915 starb und 260 Rezensionen als dessen geistige Kinder alle späteren überlebenden Schriftsteller anzuse- hen sind, schöpften sie in der unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit in einem kurzen, jedoch sehr fruchtbaren schöpferischen Aufbäumen die Hoffnung auf eine Widergeburt ihrer Kultur, so etwa in den DP-Lagern. -

GEOFFREY BEST Geoffrey Francis Andrew Best 20 November 1928 – 14 January 2018 elected Fellow of the British Academy 2003 by BOYD HILTON Fellow of the Academy Restless and energetic, Geoffrey Best moved from one subject area to another, estab- lishing himself as a leading historian in each before moving decisively to the next. He began with the history of the Anglican Church from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, then moved by turns to the economy and society of Victorian Britain, the history of peace movements and the laws of war, European military history and the life of Winston Churchill. He was similarly peripatetic in terms of institutional affili- ation, as he moved from Cambridge to Edinburgh, then Sussex, and finally Oxford. Although his work was widely and highly praised, he remained self-critical and could never quite believe in his own success. Countless people look for something light at the end 3 of the day, whether that be a rerun of their favorite TV show, a new album by their favorite band, or the latest release of their favorite magazine, instead of sitting down to watch the evening news, or read the daily newspaper. Magazines, in and of themselves are a form of entertainment, which makes them one of the most appealing sources of information for Americans who consume some form of journalism. Even if they are hard news based, magazines are perceived as more entertaining and enjoyable than other news sources. The average consumer sees reading magazines as a leisure activity, not solely as a way to find information. Unlike newspapers or TV news broadcasts, which people are likely to consume while engaging with other stimuli, magazine readers spend extended, uninterrupted, periods of time with their favorite publications. JERUSALEM Illustrated History Atlas Martin Gilbert Preface In this Atlas, I trace the history of Jerusalem from biblical times to the present day. Each map is illustrated by a facing page of prints or photographs. The sixty-six maps, taken together, are intended to provide a broad survey of Jerusalem's history, with special emphasis on the City's development during the last hundred and fifty years, when it grew from a remote and impoverished provincial town of the Ottoman Empire, with a population of less than 40,000, to a capital city with a population of more than 360,000. In the bibliography, beginning on page 124, I have listed those maps, atlases, guide books, travellers' tales and historical works which I consulted while preparing the maps, and on which I drew for the contemporary material which they contained for each decade of the city's history. In conjunction, specific sites and objects related to the Holocaust have become icons. I suggest that specific Holocaust sites as well as Holocaust films can be perceived as elements of one and/or multiple translocal assemblage/s. My focus in this analysis is on the role of knowledge production and witness creation in Holocaust memorialization. It is not my intention to diminish the role of Holocaust memorialization; rather, I seek to look beyond representational aspects, and consider the processual relationships involved in the commemoration of the Holocaust in institutions, such as memorial sites and museums, as well as through elements of popular culture, such as films. -
