Adolf Hitler as the Main Character in Twentieth-First Century French Fiction Abstract Adolf Hitler has remained a prominent figure in popular culture, often portrayed as either the personification of evil or as an object of comedic ridicule. Although Hitler has never belonged solely to history books, testimonials, or documentaries, he has recently received a great deal of attention in French literary fiction. This article reviews three recent French novels by established authors: La part de l’autre (The Alternate Hypothesis) by Emmanuel Schmitt, Lui (Him) by Patrick Besson and La jeunesse mélancolique et très désabusée d’Adolf Hitler (Adolf Hitler’s Depressed and Very Disillusioned Youth) by Michel Folco; all of which belong to the Twenty-First Century French literary trend of focusing on Second World War perpetrators instead of their victims. -

Attempts to understand the German dictator’s mental state started with his ascension to power in 1933 and continue up to the present, providing a historiography that is far more revealing about changing trends in medicine than it is about his mental state. This paper looks at the public comments of various psychiatrists on Hitler’s mental state, commencing with his rise to power to 1933 and culminating in defeat and death in 1945. The views of the psychiatrists were based on public information, largely derived from the news and often reflected their own professional bias. The first public comment on Hitler’s mental state by a psychiatrist was by Norwegian psychiatrist Johann Scharffenberg in 1933. Carl Jung made several favourable comments about him before 1939. With the onset of war, the distinguished journal The Lancet ran a review article on Hitler’s mental state with a critical editorial alongside attributed to Aubrey Lewis. -

[Expositions 5.2 (2011) 111-125] Expositions (online) ISSN: 1747-5376 The Mind of Adolf Hitler: A Study in the Unconscious Appeal of Contempt EDWARD GREEN Manhattan School of Music How did the mind of Adolf Hitler come to be so evil? This is a question which has been asked for decades – a question which millions of people have thought had no clear answer. This has been the case equally with persons who dedicated their lives to scholarship in the field. For example, Alan Bullock, author of Hitler: A Study in Tyranny, and perhaps the most famous of the biographers of the Nazi leader, is cited in Ron Rosenbaum’s 1998 book, Explaining Hitler, as saying: “The more I learn about Hitler, the harder I find it to explain” (in Rosenbaum 1998, vii). In the same text, philosopher Emil Fackenheim agrees: “The closer one gets to explicability the more one realizes nothing can make Hitler explicable” (in Rosenbaum 1998, vii).1 Even an author as keenly perceptive and ethically bold as the Swiss philosopher Max Picard confesses in his 1947 book, Hitler in Ourselves, that ultimately he is faced with a mystery.2 The very premise of his book is that somehow the mind of Hitler must be like that of ourselves. But just where the kinship lies, precisely how Hitler’s unparalleled evil and the everyday workings of our own minds explain each other – in terms of a central principle – the author does not make clear. Our Deepest Debate I say carefully, as a dispassionate scholar but also as a person of Jewish heritage who certainly would not be alive today had Hitler succeeded in his plan for world conquest, that the answer Bullock, Fackenheim, and Picard were searching for can be found in the work of the great American philosopher Eli Siegel.3 First famed as a poet, Siegel is best known now for his pioneering work in the field of the philosophy of mind.4 He was the founder of Aesthetic Realism.5 In keeping with its name, this philosophy begins with a consideration of strict ontology. -

GEOFFREY BEST Geoffrey Francis Andrew Best 20 November 1928 – 14 January 2018 elected Fellow of the British Academy 2003 by BOYD HILTON Fellow of the Academy Restless and energetic, Geoffrey Best moved from one subject area to another, estab- lishing himself as a leading historian in each before moving decisively to the next. He began with the history of the Anglican Church from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, then moved by turns to the economy and society of Victorian Britain, the history of peace movements and the laws of war, European military history and the life of Winston Churchill. He was similarly peripatetic in terms of institutional affili- ation, as he moved from Cambridge to Edinburgh, then Sussex, and finally Oxford. Although his work was widely and highly praised, he remained self-critical and could never quite believe in his own success. GEOFFREY BEST Few historians write their autobiography, but since Geoffrey Best did A Life of Learning must be the starting-point for any appraisal of his personal life.1 It is a highly readable text—engaging, warm-hearted and chatty like the man himself—but inevit- ably it invites interrogation. For example, there is the problem of knowing when the author is describing how he felt on past occasions and when he is ruminating about those feelings in retrospect. JERUSALEM Illustrated History Atlas Martin Gilbert Preface In this Atlas, I trace the history of Jerusalem from biblical times to the present day. Each map is illustrated by a facing page of prints or photographs. The sixty-six maps, taken together, are intended to provide a broad survey of Jerusalem's history, with special emphasis on the City's development during the last hundred and fifty years, when it grew from a remote and impoverished provincial town of the Ottoman Empire, with a population of less than 40,000, to a capital city with a population of more than 360,000. In the bibliography, beginning on page 124, I have listed those maps, atlases, guide books, travellers' tales and historical works which I consulted while preparing the maps, and on which I drew for the contemporary material which they contained for each decade of the city's history. The Curse of the poke bonnet: Television's version of history Transcript Date: Wednesday, 1 November 2006 - 12:00AM The Curse of the Poke Bonnet: Television's version of history Joan Bakewell I wish to begin this lecture by paying tribute to the man in whose memory it was instituted: Colin Matthew. I did not know him personally, but you do not have to go far in the world of scholarship and history to realise just how much he was admired and loved, and how extensive his influence was, not least in his role as the editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. His meticulous approach to research and his belief in the importance of both accuracy in reporting the past and wisdom in assessing its significance are virtues to which I pay tribute tonight. It is these very qualities that are called into question by how the public, and thus our children, are sometimes invited to regard history. I hope he would have endorsed what I have to say, and that his wife and his family who are here tonight will do as well. The curse of the poke bonnet! It was the fashion in the 1820s and onwards. It conceals and blinkers the vision. It is rather silly in its impact. It constrained its wearers, half the population, the women of the time, and it was a thing of straw. I use it, as you will see, as an emblem of some of the things that I have to say about television! Of all the many quotations about history, that it’s bunk, that it is written by the victors, I have chosen three to flag up my theme. -

Opposing Evil #1 by Ronald L. Dart The German people are, in every sense of the word, a great people—intelligent, innovative, accomplished—but for me the question about the Germans is always colored by the dark shades of Adolf Hitler, and the question of how it happened to them and to the Jews of Europe. Not long ago I presented a program titled How Freedom Is Lost. I turned back the pages to an episode in the history of Israel. (You can read it for yourself; it’s in 1 Samuel, chapter eight.) It came at the end of what may have been a period of unparalleled freedom, that has never been before and has never been since; and the story of why they laid that freedom down, and of what followed after, is an object lesson we must never let ourselves forget. Now, I’m not going to retell that story today. (I will tell you how to get a free CD of that program a little later.) What I want to do today is to draw another lesson from much more recent history, and to consider the implications for Christians living right now. I knew that Germany was a great nation in European history. Christianity was strong there and the Protestant Reformation was born there. I’ve heard people puzzle over how a people like the Germans of that era could possibly allow a man like Adolf Hitler—such a lowbrow, corruptible little man—to come to such absolute power. Strange as it may seem, it may have been for some of the same reasons I discussed in that program, How Freedom Is Lost. -
