Starring Hitler! Adolf Hitler as the Main Character in Twentieth-First Century French Fiction Abstract Adolf Hitler has remained a prominent figure in popular culture, often portrayed as either the personification of evil or as an object of comedic ridicule. Although Hitler has never belonged solely to history books, testimonials, or documentaries, he has recently received a great deal of attention in French literary fiction. This article reviews three recent French novels by established authors: La part de l’autre (The Alternate Hypothesis) by Emmanuel Schmitt, Lui (Him) by Patrick Besson and La jeunesse mélancolique et très désabusée d’Adolf Hitler (Adolf Hitler’s Depressed and Very Disillusioned Youth) by Michel Folco; all of which belong to the Twenty-First Century French literary trend of focusing on Second World War perpetrators instead of their victims. -

[Expositions 5.2 (2011) 111-125] Expositions (online) ISSN: 1747-5376 The Mind of Adolf Hitler: A Study in the Unconscious Appeal of Contempt EDWARD GREEN Manhattan School of Music How did the mind of Adolf Hitler come to be so evil? This is a question which has been asked for decades – a question which millions of people have thought had no clear answer. This has been the case equally with persons who dedicated their lives to scholarship in the field. For example, Alan Bullock, author of Hitler: A Study in Tyranny, and perhaps the most famous of the biographers of the Nazi leader, is cited in Ron Rosenbaum’s 1998 book, Explaining Hitler, as saying: “The more I learn about Hitler, the harder I find it to explain” (in Rosenbaum 1998, vii). In the same text, philosopher Emil Fackenheim agrees: “The closer one gets to explicability the more one realizes nothing can make Hitler explicable” (in Rosenbaum 1998, vii).1 Even an author as keenly perceptive and ethically bold as the Swiss philosopher Max Picard confesses in his 1947 book, Hitler in Ourselves, that ultimately he is faced with a mystery.2 The very premise of his book is that somehow the mind of Hitler must be like that of ourselves. But just where the kinship lies, precisely how Hitler’s unparalleled evil and the everyday workings of our own minds explain each other – in terms of a central principle – the author does not make clear. Our Deepest Debate I say carefully, as a dispassionate scholar but also as a person of Jewish heritage who certainly would not be alive today had Hitler succeeded in his plan for world conquest, that the answer Bullock, Fackenheim, and Picard were searching for can be found in the work of the great American philosopher Eli Siegel.3 First famed as a poet, Siegel is best known now for his pioneering work in the field of the philosophy of mind.4 He was the founder of Aesthetic Realism.5 In keeping with its name, this philosophy begins with a consideration of strict ontology. -

Without these documents, the best investigative reporting in the world could not have produced a book, and the secrets of CIA mind-control work would have remained buried forever, as the men who knew them had always intended. From the documentary base, I was able to expand my knowledge through interviews and readings in the behavioral sciences. Neverthe- less, the final result is not the whole story of the CIA's attack on the mind. Only a few insiders could have written that, and they choose to remain silent. I have done the best I can to make the book as accurate as possible, but I have been hampered by the refusal of most of the principal characters to be interviewed and by the CIA's destruction in 1973 of many of the key docu- ments. -

Autobiographical Reflections on the Intersubjective History of an Intersubjective Perspective in Psychoanalysis Robert D. Stolorow, Ph.D. This article traces the evolution of the author's intersubjective perspective by chronicling four decades of formative relationships that contributed to its creation. My development as a psychoanalytic theoretician and practitioner is coextensive with the evolution of a psychoanalytic perspective that I have come to call intersubjective systems theory. True to this perspective, the history of its evolution that follows is in large part a history of formative relationships— with teachers, with mentors, and, especially important, with treasured collaborators. (An important omission here is the profound impact of my relationships with patients.) The intellectual roots of my psychoanalytic perspective go back to the period of my doctoral studies in clinical psychology at Harvard, from 1965 to 1970. During that period, Harvard was a wonderful place for a clinical psychologist to grow up in intellectually. The WARNING! Thus, instead of studying the experimental psychology of rats, I had the privilege of learning about social systems theory from Talcott Parsons, culture and personality from John Whiting, and epigenesis and identity formation from Erik Erikson. -

Psychology is a part of logic, history, health, law, philosophy, economics and finance, religion and our social political economic development. The beginning and growth in psychology has been a marked development that is highly intertwined with psychopathology, psychiatry, psychotherapy and counselling. This is because the study of human behaviour and mental processes is a part of health, a search for meaning of life, a social concern of what is acceptable and appropriate conduct in society, and at the same time a search for meaning of human relations. This paper links the history and systems of psychology with modernity by highlighting a systematic application of psychology and its principles in our contemporary society. Keywords: history, developments, systems, perspectives of psychology Background to study The history and development of various systems and perspectives in psychology is often presented as standalone events or the contribution of various personalities (eminent scholars). This lonesome approach makes it difficult for ordinary students particularly in the developing countries to comprehensively embrace psychology. -

(Third edition, with a new introduction by Anne Byrne, Ricca Edmondson, and Tony Varley.) Ennis, Ireland: CLASP Press, 2001. 101 ϩ 417 pp. £26 (cloth). ISBN 1-900-545-13-6. Sociologists of the National University of Ireland, Galway, have done a service to the anthropological and sociological communities by reprinting this facsimile of a classic long out of print. The work was part of a wider Harvard Irish Study, carried out from 1931–1936; it became a classic for both its data and their interpretation, and its methods. The authors of the new introduction have done considerable research to place it in its historical context, describing how the study originated in Lloyd Warner’s program of work and how it related to the other parts of the Irish Study, and showing the process of the negotiation needed to establish access and to choose a particular community to study. It is also placed in the theo- retical context of the time, and the contemporary meanings it had are related to that. It is sug- gested that Arensberg and Kimball’s version of functionalism, and their aim of producing a case study to contribute to an objective worldwide classification of societies, with the termi- nology they used to describe them, did not have the significance later imputed to them; some modern interpretations and critical comments have rested on misunderstandings due to lack of knowledge of the intellectual setting.
