Professor) Editorial Board : ....................................................368 Chapter - I From Bharmacharyashrama to Visva-Bharati: A Chronicle of Metamorphosis of a Tiny School into an Internationally-Acclaimed Centre of Learning Visva-Bharati which epitomizes culmination of Asia's first Nobel Laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore's dream of an institution, slated to deliver holistic education, as preached in the Upanisadas (that which emancipates is knowledge) had a very modest beginning. In 1863, Debendranath Tagore,the poet's father and a herbringer of nineteenth century Bengal Renaissance took the users right of 20 bighas of land at an early land rent of twenty rupees in the arid soil of the district of Birbhum and established the Santiniketan Ashrama. In 1888, he executed a Trust Deed for the management of the Ashrama and dedicated it for the purpose of meditation.Thoroughly averse to the-then education system and its mode of teaching which he considered mechanical, soulless and uninspiring, Rabindranath established a school, viz. Santiniketan Brahmacharyashrama on 23rd December, 1901 with five students with the avowed objective of providing, as reported by the Visva-Bharati Bulletin of January, 1924: "to a limited number of children an education which would not be divorced from life, where pupils would become members of a larger family and regard the affairs of the institution as their own, and where they would live and grow in an atmosphere of freedom, mutual trust and happiness." In conscious repudiation of the education system introduced by the British hegemony which harped on producing a group of stupefied clerks, bent on making British Raj unrivalled, Rabindranath introduced a new system of reading-learning where classes were held in open air, where man and nature enter into an immediate harmonious relationship. Twenty years later in a letter to Patrick Geddes, he emphasized: "I merely started with this one simple idea that education should never be dissociated from life." The concept of holistic education which will nurture a 'complete' human was imbibed by Rabindranath from our ancient Indian Upanisadic texts which preached emancipation of soul from the bondage of mundane prosperity. His resource was limited, but his ideal was unswerving. By 1917, the idea of an Indian cultural centre was gradually shaping up. The centre will be slated "for the coordinated study of the different cultures." On 23rd December, 1918, the foundation stone of Visva-Bharati was laid by the poet-educator. It highlights key developments over time in all such facets, whilst serving as a placeholder for the timelessness of its unique culture and ethos. It permits viewing a District beyond the prismatic image of a geographical or administrative unit, since the Gazetteer holistically captures its socio-cultural diversity, traditions, and practices, the creative contributions and industriousness of its people and luminaries, and builds on the economic, commercial and social interplay with the rest of the State and the country at large. The document which is a centrepiece of the District, is developed and brought out by the State administration with the cooperation and contributions of all concerned. Its purpose is to generate awareness, public consciousness, spirit of cooperation, pride in contribution to the development of a District, and to serve multifarious interests and address concerns of the people of a District and others in any way concerned. Historically, the ―Imperial Gazetteers‖ were prepared by Colonial administrators for the six Districts of the then Orissa, namely, Angul, Balasore, Cuttack, Koraput, Puri, and Sambalpur. After Independence, the Scheme for compilation of District Gazetteers devolved from the Central Sector to the State Sector in 1957.

We will study the major religious thinkers, many of whom had an impact on the political history of India. We will study the rites-of-passage, connections between food and religion, places of worship, festivals, gurus, as well as the close connections between religion and politics in many of these traditions. The religious traditions we will examine and intellectually engage with are primarily Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, as well as Christianity and Islam in India. We will strike a balance between a historical approach and a thematic one whereby sacraments, rituals, and other issues and activities that are religiously important for a Hindu family can be explained. This will include discussion of issues that may not be found in traditional texts, and I will supplement the readings with short journal and magazine articles, videos, and slides. On Some Media And Application Sinthetic Plant Growth Regulator Ella Yusnita, Yanti Puspitasari, Dwi Susanto Abstract: This research aims to determine the effect of giving IBA and NAA and plant media combination to the growth of shoot cutting of Agarwood. This research was done by 2 treatments which are IBA and NAA (RO = 0 ppm, R1 = 50 ppm, R2 = 100 ppm, R3 = 150 ppm and R4 = 200 ppm) and plant media (M0 = soil, M1 = soil + rice husk, M2 = soil + compost) respectively. The data was analyzed with the variant analysis (ANOVA), and continued by Duncan test (P=0.05). The results showed the awarding IBA and NAA with a concentration of 50, 100, 150 and 200 ppm was able to increase the average percentage live shoot cuttings almost reach 100%, media increasing the percentage of living shoot cuttings. Their cool­ headed and amiable temperament, their power of adaptabili­ ty and adjustability to any kind of circumstances~ envi­ ronment, whether regional or local, their exceptional sense of conciliation and assimilation - all these traits of their character helped them considerably in doing business in distant and unknown places, far away from their native land. However, human factors are conditioned, to some extent,by compulsions. The Marwaris are aware. that good public relations are a requisite for business transactions and that a rapport with the general public can best be estab­ lished by making cordial gesture. Their quick adoption of the local language helps them immensely in establishing this rapport. Initially, they used to migrate to a place in search of subsistence alone, keeping their womenfolk at home. So there had always been an identity crisis which they suffered from at the place of migration and to over- 344 come this crisis they thought it wise to mingle with the local people by participating in local festivals and attending social gatherings o.f other communi ties who lived there. Thereby they tried to join the mainstream of the society. At times, this attempt at social merger was per- haps only half-hearted in view of the fact that a sense of uncertainty in business always occupied their minds which were also filled with concern for their families particu- i larl:y for their womenfolk.
