Since then, they have shared a number of ideas, musical projects, and travels all over the world. In 2002, with the violinist Ivan Rabaglia and cellist Enrico Bronzi, they created a chamber music group devoted to nineteenth-century repertoire. A LHOYER year later they formed a duo that has already performed throughout Europe and North America, and has won unanimous acclaim. In addition to classical, romantic and modern repertoire, Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli, (1768–1852) joined by the lutenist Massimo Lonardi, enjoy exploring the early literature for baroque guitar and theorbo. Their recordings include François de Fossa’s Three Quartets, Op. 19 (Stradivarius), a CD of Italian musicc from the eighteenth century for baroque guitar, archlute and theorbo (Stradivarius), an anthology of twentieth-century masterpieces for two guitars (Pomegranate), as well as a dozen solo recordings on the Naxos, Brilliant Records, Duos Concertants Kookaburra, Mel Bay, and Stradivarius labels. In presenting these events it has been my honor to work with Cleveland Institute of Music Guitar Department Head and 2015 GRAMMY Award Winner Jason Vieaux, one of the world’s indisputably great classical guitarists, musicians, and teachers. It has also been my honor to be assisted by Tom Poore, a highly devoted, energetic guitar teacher, a superb writer, and an indefatigable supporter and critic of all things associated with fine music making and the classical guitar. Our reasons for presenting this Festival are fivefold: (1) to help increase the awareness and respect due artists whose exemplary work has enhanced our lives and the lives of others; (2) to entertain; (3) to educate; (4) to encourage deeper thought and discussion about how we listen to, perform, and evaluate fine music; and most important, (5) to help facilitate heightened moments of human awareness. In our experience, participation in the live performance of fine music is potentially the highest social end toward which we can aspire as performers, music students, and music lovers. For it is in live, heightened moments of musical magic—when time stops and egos dissolve— that we often become most conscious of our shared humanity.

  • Guitar Composers of the Classical and Early Romantic Period Circa 1780-1900
Guitar Composers of the Classical and Early Romantic Period Circa 1780-1900 "Guitar compositions of the 19th century, with the exception of those of a didactic nature, haven't received the attention they deserve from either scholars or performers. The superficial accusation made of such literature that it is of little artistic value, is the result of a series of misconceptions which have been passed on due to the absence of an adequate historical and aesthetic analysis, and due also to the unfamiliarity of the performers with music which demands a brilliant technique too often superior to their ability. Oppressed by the works of the great Romantics and intimidated by such technical difficulty, guitarists have preferred to ignore a period which often presents music of excellent substance.. However, today increasing attempts are being made to revalue the music of those who kept the instrumental tradition alive even in the countries that saw an almost total predominance of opera. A careful selection of these compositions reveals works which compare well with the best pages of other more successful composers and which deserve to be in cluded in today's concert programmes." - In memory of Ruggero Chiesa (1933 - 1993) Recommended 6-string Early Classical-Romantic Guitar Composers (by birth date): 1 Major non-guitar composers included for time frame point of reference 2 Composers which were major orchestral composers but minor guitar composers Guitar Composers : Bach ( 1685 - 1750 ) 1 Haydn ( 1732 - 1809 ) 1 Luigi Boccherini 2 1749 - 1805 Christian
