Founders' Day Held at Paf College, Sargodha
FOUNDERS’ DAY HELD AT PAF COLLEGE, SARGODHA ISLAMABAD: 11 FEBRUARY, 2017:- Founders’ Day was held at PAF College, Sargodha today. Air Marshal Asad Lodhi, Vice Chief of the Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force, who is a Sargodhian himself, was the Chief Guest at the occasion. While addressing the young students the Chief Guest said, “Pakistan Air Force trusts you to become the stalwarts of tomorrow, ready to shoulder the sacred responsibility of defending the aerial frontier of the motherland and at the same time being spirited patriots, contributing positively in nation building. We are living in difficult times and have to be aware of our enemies who are on the lookout for any weakness. The only answer to their evil designs is that we should not lack in particulars spheres of responsibility”. Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Qasim Masood Khan, Principal PAF College Sargodha presented the annual report. The Chief Guest gave away prizes to the winning houses and individuals. The Academic Colour for overall excellence in academics was shared by Mohammas Ahsan, Mohammad Tufail and Danyal Butt. M Talha Mazhar was declared the best athlete of the Year. Chigwell shield for sports was awarded to Alauddin House. General Service Training Cup for co-curricular activities was won by Munir House, while Chief of Air Staff trophy for academics was won by Safi House. Safi House lifted the coveted Quaid-e-Azam shield for being overall Champion House of the Year. The students of the college presented an impressive Gymnastics and Martial Art display and a well-synchronized P.T show. -

Pakistan's Army
Pakistan’s Army: New Chief, traditional institutional interests Introduction A year after speculation about the names of those in the race for selection as the new Army Chief of Pakistan began, General Qamar Bajwa eventually took charge as Pakistan's 16th Chief of Army Staff on 29th of November 2016, succeeding General Raheel Sharif. Ordinarily, such appointments in the defence services of countries do not generate much attention, but the opposite holds true for Pakistan. Why this is so is evident from the popular aphorism, "while every country has an army, the Pakistani Army has a country". In Pakistan, the army has a history of overshadowing political landscape - the democratically elected civilian government in reality has very limited authority or control over critical matters of national importance such as foreign policy and security. A historical background The military in Pakistan is not merely a human resource to guard the country against the enemy but has political wallop and opinions. To know more about the power that the army enjoys in Pakistan, it is necessary to examine the times when Pakistan came into existence in 1947. In 1947, both India and Pakistan were carved out of the British Empire. India became a democracy whereas Pakistan witnessed several military rulers and still continues to suffer from a severe civil- military imbalance even after 70 years of its birth. During India’s war of Independence, the British primarily recruited people from the Northwest of undivided India which post partition became Pakistan. It is noteworthy that the majority of the people recruited in the Pakistan Army during that period were from the Punjab martial races. -

CADET COLLEGE PETARO – A COLLEGE WITH A DIFFERENCE Prof. Affan Maqsood, Ex-Professor & ex-Head of Dept. of English, CCP (1969-1996) (Currently Prof. Affan Maqsood is Head of Dept. of English at the Women’s Institute of Science and Humanities, Islamabad) The mere thought of Cadet College Petaro makes me nostalgic about the twenty seven years I spent at Petaro as a teacher of English. I joined as lecturer in English, and left as professor and Head of the Department of English, and Divisional Co- coordinator officer. Petaro is reminiscent of the golden period of my life. It was not merely a period of my teaching, but also a period of my grooming as a teacher of English. No doubt there are some other good cadet colleges in the country, Cadet College Hasan Abdal being perhaps the oldest with its own history and traditions. But of all the colleges, Cadet College Petaro stands at the climax. My opinion is neither based on my emotional attachment with this institution nor on prejudice against any other institution. Rather it is genuinely based on cogent reasons. I joined Cadet College Petaro on the 4th of September, 1969. If I am not mistaken, the same year or the next, Petaro won the President’s Sport Shield, by winning the Inter-Cadet College Sports Tournament for the fourth consecutive year. I do admit that Hasan Abdal has an excellent record in terms of extra-curricular activities, in general and academics in particular. The whole credit for this achievement does not go only to Hasan Abdal but also to the cadets, who are selected purely on merit. -
Pakistan 2019 International Religious Freedom Report
PAKISTAN 2019 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary The constitution establishes Islam as the state religion and requires all provisions of the law to be consistent with Islam. The constitution states, “Subject to law, public order, and morality, every citizen shall have the right to profess, practice, and propagate his religion.” It also states, “A person of the Qadiani group or the Lahori group (who call themselves Ahmadis), is a non-Muslim.” The courts continued to enforce blasphemy laws, punishment for which ranges from life in prison to execution for a range of charges, including “defiling the Prophet Muhammad.” According to civil society reports, there were at least 84 individuals imprisoned on blasphemy charges, at least 29 of whom had received death sentences, as compared with 77 and 28, respectively, in 2018. The government has never executed anyone specifically for blasphemy. According to data provided by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), police registered new blasphemy cases against at least 10 individuals. Christian advocacy organizations and media outlets stated that four Christians were tortured or mistreated by police in August and September, resulting in the death of one of them. On January 29, the Supreme Court upheld its 2018 judgment overturning the conviction of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman sentenced to death for blasphemy in 2010. Bibi left the country on May 7, after death threats made it unsafe for her to remain. On September 25, the Supreme Court overturned the conviction of a man who had spent 18 years in prison for blasphemy. On December 21, a Multan court sentenced English literature lecturer Junaid Hafeez to death for insulting the Prophet Muhammad after he had spent nearly seven years awaiting trial and verdict. -
