MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR SAILORS, MARINES, AND THEIR FAMILIES Greetings from the Secretary of the Navy

n behalf of all Sailors, Marines, and their Ofamilies, I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. Your selfless dedication and tireless commitment continue to make a positive impact on the mission readiness of our Naval Services.

From the number of active duty and retired Sailors and Marines who received financial assistance, to the number of contacts made by visiting nurses to Navy and Marine Corps homes, the Society’s presence, day in and day out, around the globe, means our military leaders have an important partner to help address the financial well-being of our fighting forces.

The Society’s mission is only accomplished through the generosity of donors because they appreciate military service, understand the sacrifices military families endure, and recognize that emergency situations are most likely to arise when a service member is deployed. Given this realization, donors, through their generous gifts, have always met the needs of active duty and retired Sailors and Marines facing financial hardships. It is your collective actions for which I am thankful.

I am proud of the partnership, rich history, and tradition “...the Society’s presence, day we share with the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. in and day out, around the globe, means our military Sincerely, leaders have an impartant partner to help address the financial well-being of our fighting forces.” Ray Mabus

NMCRS.ORG/REPORT2012 | 3 A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDANT OF THE MARINE CORPS

ne of my highest priorities as Commandant has Obeen to keep faith with our Marines, our Sailors and our families. Keeping faith means that we will ensure they have the support, services and infrastructure they need to live their lives and be ready to contribute to the overall mission of the Navy and Marine Corps. That mission requires our forces to be forward deployed and engaged, protecting the Nation's interests abroad. We must be the most ready when the Nation is least ready. As America's Expeditionary Force in Readiness, the Marine Corps takes great pride in the readiness and performance of our Marines and Sailors.

The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society contributes directly to the readiness of our forces through the tireless efforts of its employees and volunteers. For 109 years, the Society has bridged the gap when our Marines, Sailors, and families needed financial assistance in getting through tough times. This assistance eases some of the burden of difficult times and allows our Marines and Sailors to focus on the mission at hand. In 2012, the Relief Society provided more than $41 Million dollars of support to our families, all made possible by the employees, countless volunteers and donors who graciously give their time and resources for the benefit of others. These thoughtful efforts contribute mightily to the Know that all who wear the Eagle, Globe and Anchor needs of today's Navy and Marine Corps Team. are deeply grateful for your fidelity to our Marines and Sailors.

On behalf of all Marines, I offer my heartfelt gratitude to As our men and women return the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, its employees, from combat, we have a moral volunteers and donors. As our men and General, U.S. Marine Corps women return from combat, we have a moral obligation to ensure they are cared for and adequately prepared for the next chapter of their lives. The Society's Visiting Nurses help to ensure we stay true to that promise.

gain this year, I was blessed with members of the A Relief Committee who worked incredibly well together to review requests from service widows for assistance and identify resources to improve their quality of life.

During the year, we said farewell to Marianne Panter, who served three of the last five years and is greatly missed. We welcomed back Gail Waldhauser as she returned to Metro D.C. following another PCS move. Mindy Van Buskirk also joined our team bringing her wonderful sense of humor and abounding grace.

For the past five years, Karen Young has stepped in as an alternate for committee members who were vacationing or assisting their active duty husbands in various ways. Previously, Karen chaired the Relief Committee for six years and has been a long-time supporter of the Society. NMCRS Miramar This award was presented by the Jacksonville-Onslow Volunteer & Nonprofit Resource Center. Some people think that the military lifestyle provides security and immunity from life’s challenges. That is not the case. When you are 18 or 19 and learning to navigate the military environment, the normal adjustments to getting out on your own are magnified. We let Sailors and Marines know that we have their backs. We’re here to help them learn to become Sara Griffin, Chair of self-sufficient. Volunteers, NMCRS San Mary Whitkop Diego, was recognized NMCRS Mayport as Rookie Volunteer Administrator for 2012, by the Volunteer One of the Administrators Network, strengths of the for her leadership, Society is that management skills and every office is service within her different.
