Greetings from

the Secretary of the Navy

his year marked the 110th anniversary of the founding of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. TIt is with sincere gratitude that I recognize such a remarkable legacy of support for servicemen and women and their loved ones.

From the very beginning, the Society's mission has been accomplished through the selfless, day-to-day commitment of faithful volunteers. These remarkable men and women devote precious hours of their lives to serve others. They ensure Sailors and Marines can travel to the bedside of an ailing loved one, pay for food and lodging when a natural disaster strikes, and successfully navigate personal financial crisis.

In 2014, Society volunteers gave more than 521,900 hours of their time to provide financial assistance, budget counseling, budget for baby workshops, and staffing for thrift shops – all in support of Navy and Marine Corps families. With oversight and assistance from a small cadre of employees, the daily administration and fiduciary responsibilities of the Society are fulfilled with the highest ethical and professional standards. A MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS

n behalf of the men, women, and families of the Navy, I offer my sincere Oappreciation to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. The staff members, the 4,067 volunteers, and countless generous donors are responsible for the successful completion of the Society's vital mission, and to them, our Navy-Marine Corps team is tremendously grateful.

At home and around the globe, Society members dedicate their time and effort to assist with family emergencies and personal financial hardships for our Sailors and Marines. Because of their help, issues are resolved before becoming an overwhelming crisis.

As Chairman of the Board of Directors, I am proud to report again this year that the Society acted as a judicious financial steward of your donated dollars, minimizing administrative and overhead costs to less than four percent of all expenses. The Society provided more than $48.5 million in interest-free loans and grants to help 61,629 Navy and Marine Corps service members Sincerely, and their families.

A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDANT OF THE MARINE CORPS

t is with great pride that I recognize Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society employees, volunteers and Icontributors for their sustained commitment and generosity to our Marines and Sailors. Society volunteers and employees play an important role in ensuring our men and women remain focused on their war-fighting mission, knowing that their families and loved ones will be taken care of when family emergencies arise.

The Society’s registered nurses made more than 23,000 home visits and other contacts with mothers and their newborns, elderly retirees, widows and widowers. Additionally, the Society’s combat casualty assistance visiting nurses made more than 39,000 contacts and visits to the rehabilitation facilities and homes of 1,700 combat-wounded service members. No other government or charitable organization can provide that kind of personal, one-on-one emotional support and knowledge of community resources for our men and women adjusting to post-combat life. Like the Marine Corps itself, the Society ensures these Marines and Sailors will not be forgotten.

“By our own, for our own” is a way of life for those who Semper Fidelis, serve. The Society has carried out that commitment and stood by Marine Corps and Navy families for more than a century. Thank-you for your steadfast devotion to all who wear the Eagle, Globe and Anchor. I remain… Joseph F. Dunford, Jr. General, U.S. Marine Corps

Relief Committee Report

he 2014 Relief Committee included Mary Regner, Joanne Buck, Dana Richardson and Megan Moffit Twith Ellyn Dunford as a welcome alternate. Relief Committee members review all requests for widows applying to the Society for a monthly stipend to augment their income and achieve a basic standard of living. Every member conducted a thorough, considerate review of each widow’s case and provided diligent and prompt responses. In some cases when the widow’s financial situation did not warrant a monthly supplement from the Society, committee members were able to suggest additional resources and make recommendations to help each widow better navigate their challenging world.

This year, the committee played an important role in connecting many Navy and Marine Corps widows with local Meals on Wheels services to receive nutritional hot and cold meals during the week. We identified two 2014 Relief Committee: Ellyn Dunford widows receiving a monthly income supplement from the (alternate) Joanne Buck, Megan Moffit, Dana Society who had mobility issues that could not participate Richardson and Mary Regner (insert). in the Meals on Wheels program because their meals needed to be picked up from a central distribution center. In true volunteer fashion, the Society Board of Directors, USN and USMC Widow Assistance including Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Mike Stevens and Vice Admiral Nanette DeRenzi, the Relief $500,000 Committee, Headquarters Caseworkers and the Navy Region Southwest Command Master Chief, David Dearie $400,000 were able to solve this problem by finding Sailors to voluntarily pick up and deliver meals to local military $300,000 widows with transportation challenges.
