Manufacturing in Classical Athens MANUFACTURING IN CLASSICAL ATHENS Peter Hampden Acton Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy October 2010 School of Historical Studies The University of Melbourne ABSTRACT This thesis aims to show that applying contemporary economic frameworks and analyses to manufacturing in classical Athens can reveal important insights into Athenian society. This approach defies recent orthodoxy which argues that the economy was so “embedded” in ancient society that current economic concepts and, in particular, the assumption of profit- maximising behaviour cannot be applied. The thesis includes an assessment of the logic and relevance of this view. The principal module of analysis concerns industry structure; the theory of competitive advantage is found to explain the known size of enterprises across a range of industries and to identify four Types of manufacturing business that differed in the demands they made on participants and in the rewards they offered. Demographic analysis shows how different social groups participated in different industry Types to meet their specific objectives. The widespread availability of semi-casual income-earning opportunities for citizens of modest means revealed by this analysis must have been an important enabler of the Athenian lifestyle and participatory democracy. Three other analyses support the general proposition that there is value in applying economic analyses. They address the following questions: How and why did industries emerge from the oikos? (Supply and Demand Theory). How did Athenians think about industry as an investment opportunity? (Risk-Return Analysis). Why did Athens not have an Industrial Revolution? (Combining previous findings). In each case, the thesis identifies new perspectives on ancient society and behaviour that are revealed by the microeconomic analysis. The conclusions also cast into serious doubt arguments by recent scholars that ancient behaviour in the economic sphere was not economically rational or geared to profit-maximisation. They show that Athenians largely acted in a commercially rational way but with important exceptions revealed by the analysis. The world of Greek comedy has always been a mysterious universe for amateurs. The naive enthusiasm of Renaissance intellectuals, who, immediately after the publication of the editio princeps of the eleven Aristophanic comedies, edited their complete translations (without footnotes!) in Latin (Andreas Divus) and Italian (the Rositini brothers), has decreased as time has passed. In contrast to the fate of Greek tragedies, Aristophanes’ and Menander’s comedies have always been rare- ly performed; even the most recent translations cannot refrain from using ex- planatory notes if they want their readers to understand the nuances of the Greek text. Apart from the two main authors, the other comic poets (Cratinus, Eupolis, Alexis, Diphilus, Philemon) are almost unknown, in spite of the good reputation they had in the ancient world. From this point of view the difference with tragedy is even greater: among the majority of people, the three tragic poets of the fifth century BCE enjoy a much wider popularity than the single representative of ancient Greek comedy; Menander’s popularity (a fairly recent one, based on the papyrological discoveries of the last century) cannot compete with that of his Roman followers, Plautus and Terence.     On the Teaching of Virtue in Plato’s Meno and the Nature of Philosophical Authority Abraham D. Stone May 2, 2010 Abstract Socrates and Meno reach two different conclusions: in the first part of the dialogue, that virtue is knowledge and can therefore be taught; in the second, that it is reliable true opinion and can therefore be acquired only by divine inspiration. Taking into account Socrates’ role as a teacher (of his interlocutors and of Plato) and Plato’s role as a teacher (of us), I show that neither of these conclusions is consistent with the existence of philosophy as a human institution, and argue that, for this reason, Plato refuses ultimately to endorse either of them. Meno’s question — “Can you tell me, Socrates, whether virtue is something teachable?” (70a1–2)1 — is important for the obvious reason that it concerns what we must do: if there is some way of acquiring virtue, then we are obliged to acquire it. But it has further implications, as well, both for political philosophy and for philosophical politics: that is, the political structure of philosophy itself. It is therefore worth understanding how Plato answers it, or fails to, in the course of the dialogue. Much discussion of the Meno has focused on epistemological issues, and on the passages in which Socrates explains his theory of learning as recollection.     Noahidism or B’nai Noah—sons of Noah—refers to, arguably, a family of watered–down versions of Orthodox Judaism. A majority of Orthodox Jews, and most members of the broad spectrum of Jewish movements overall, do not proselytize or, borrowing Christian terminology, “evangelize” or “witness.” In the U.S., an even larger number of Jews, as with this writer’s own family of orientation or origin, never affiliated with any Jewish movement. Noahidism may have given some groups of Orthodox Jews a method, arguably an excuse, to bypass the custom of nonconversion. Those Orthodox Jews are, in any event, simply breaking with convention, not with a scriptural ordinance. Although Noahidism is based ,MP3], Tạləmūḏ]תַּלְמּוד ,upon the Talmud (Hebrew “instruction”), not the Bible, the text itself does not explicitly call for a Noahidism per se. Numerous commandments supposedly mandated for the sons of Noah or heathen are considered within the context of a rabbinical conversation. Two only partially overlapping enumerations of seven “precepts” are provided. Furthermore, additional precepts, not incorporated into either list, are mentioned. The frequently referenced “seven laws of the sons of Noah” are, therefore, misleading and, indeed, arithmetically incorrect. By my count, precisely a dozen are specified. Although I, honestly, fail to understand why individuals would self–identify with a faith which labels them as “heathen,” that is their business, not mine. Solon is cited and/or quoted thirty-four times in Plato’s dialogues, and alluded to many more times. My study shows that these references and allusions have deeper meaning when contextualized within the reception of Solon in the classical period. For Plato, Solon is a rhetorically powerful figure in advancing the relatively new practice of philosophy in Athens. While Solon himself did not adequately establish justice in the city, his legacy provided a model upon which Platonic philosophy could improve. Chapter One surveys the passing references to Solon in the dialogues as an introduction to my chapters on the dialogues in which Solon is a very prominent figure, Timaeus- Critias, Republic, and Laws. Chapter Two examines Critias’ use of his ancestor Solon to establish his own philosophic credentials. Chapter Three suggests that Socrates re- appropriates the aims and themes of Solon’s political poetry for Socratic philosophy. Chapter Four suggests that Solon provides a legislative model which Plato reconstructs in the Laws for the philosopher to supplant the role of legislator in Greek thought.

Schwuchow**, Brandenburg University of Technology, Germany George Tridimas***, Ulster University, Northern Ireland This version: 18 June 2019 Abstract In 594 BCE the Athenian statesman Solon defused a grave social crisis by introducing wide- ranging constitutional, political and economic reforms which granted various rights to a nas- cent ‘middle class’ and reduced the power of the wealthy birth aristocracy. Solon’s reforms included a law which perhaps counter-intuitively banned citizens from staying neutral in cas- es of civil conflict. After reviewing aspects of the law against neutrality debated by historians, the present paper employs the methodology of the economics of conflict to investigate the implications of the law for the stability of the constitutional order initiated by Solon. We ex- amine a stylised model of three social classes, Rich, Middle and Poor, where the former two compete for control of the government, and the Poor may decide to stay neutral or side with either the Middle or the Rich. By solving the model we identify conditions for the Rich to ac- cept the Solonian order or reject it and mount a coup.
