    [ 499 ] The Eggs and Larvre of Turritella communis Lamarck and Aporrhais pes-pelicani (L.). By Marie V. Lebour, D.Se., Naturalist at the Plymouth Laboratory. With Plates 1-2. NOTHINGis known of the eggs and larvre of Turritella communis and, except for the young shells which have already metamorphosed, those of Aporrhais pes-pelicani are also unknown. The following descriptions are therefore new, both molluscs having been kept in plunger-jars until they laid their eggs. TURRITELLA COMMUNIS LAMARCK. (Plate 1.) Turritella communis is dredged alive in abundance in certain localities round Plymouth on muddy and sandy gravel, 15-30 fathoms or, rarely in over 40 fathoms (see Plymouth Marine Fauna, 1931, Marine Biological Association). Many were kept alive in plunger-jars, but, although they lived for a long time, feeding on detritus accumulating on the glass sides, . no eggs were obtained for several months. At last, in May, some eggs were deposited in one of the jars, and after that several lots were laid up to August. Occasionally detached egg capsules were found in the plank- ton. Ripe sperm and nearly ripe eggs were found in November and February in a few individuals. I am indebted to Miss M. Rothschild and Mr. ldris Jones for records of much ripe sperm and ripe eggs in April, and very few in September. Apparently April to July is the natural breeding season as after June most of the eggs were shed. Three egg-masses were found in a plunger-jar, 12.5.32. Each of these was a large cluster of capsules measuring from 6 to 10 mm.

Adams & A. Adams, 1854, are found in rivers, lakes, and other limnetic habitats. In Indonesia, Tarebia granifera (Lamarck, 1822) is the only species within the genus that has a wide distribution. The systematics and identity of this species are still doubtful due to high variation in shell morphology, especially shell height and ornamentation or sculpture of shell. To determine the identity of T. granifera from Lombok, Banten, and Maros, ontogenetic studies have been conducted. The results showed that T. granifera from Lombok produce the highest number of embryonic shells. The number of progeny in the brood pouch from a single individual of T. granifera can vary between 9 to 203 embryonic shells which are found in various stages of 0.22 mm to about 5 mm in size inside the brood pouch. Cerithiform gastropods possess high-spired shells with small apertures, anterior canals or si- nuses, and usually one or more spiral rows of tubercles, spines or nodes. This shell morphology occurs mostly within the superfamily Cerithioidea. Several morphologic characters of cerithiform shells are adap- tive within five broad functional areas: (1) defence from shell-peeling predators (external sculpture, pre- adult internal barriers, preadult varices, adult aperture) (2) burrowing and infaunal life (burrowing sculp- tures, bent and elongated inhalant adult siphon, plough-like adult outer lip, flattened dorsal region of last whorl), (3) clamping of the aperture onto a solid substrate (broad tangential adult aperture), (4) stabilisa- tion of the shell when epifaunal (broad adult outer lip and at least three types of swellings located on the left ventrolateral side of the last whorl in the adult stage), and (5) righting after accidental overturning (pro- jecting dorsal tubercles or varix on the last or penultimate whorl, in one instance accompanied by hollow ventral tubercles that are removed by abrasion against the substrate in the adult stage). Most of these char- acters are made feasible by determinate growth and a countdown ontogenetic programme.

    Seasearch Wales 2012 Summary Report report prepared by Kate Lock, South and West Wales coco----ordinatorordinator Liz MorMorris,ris, North Wales coco----ordinatorordinator Chris Wood, National coco----ordinatorordinator Seasearch Wales 2012 Seasearch is a volunteer marine habitat and species surveying scheme for recreational divers in Britain and Ireland. It is coordinated by the Marine Conservation Society. This report summarises the Seasearch activity in Wales in 2012. It includes summaries of the sites surveyed and identifies rare or unusual species and habitats encountered. These include a number of Welsh Biodiversity Action Plan habitats and species. It does not include all of the detailed data as this has been entered into the Marine Recorder database and supplied to Natural Resources Wales for use in its marine conservation activities. The data is also available on-line through the National Biodiversity Network. During 2012 we continued to focus on Biodiversity Action Plan species and habitats and on sites that had not been previously surveyed. Data from Wales in 2012 comprised 192 Observation Forms, 154 Survey Forms and 1 sea fan record. The total of 347 represents 19% of the data for the whole of Britain and Ireland. Seasearch in Wales is delivered by two Seasearch regional coordinators. Kate Lock coordinates the South and West Wales region which extends from the Severn estuary to Aberystwyth. Liz Morris coordinates the North Wales region which extends from Aberystwyth to the Dee. The two coordinators are assisted by a number of active Seasearch Tutors, Assistant Tutors and Dive Organisers. Overall guidance and support is provided by the National Seasearch Coordinator, Chris Wood.

Here, we redescribe Aylacostoma chloroticum Hylton Scott, 1954, and describe Aylacostoma brunneum sp. nov. from the High Paraná River (Argentina–Paraguay) by means of morphological and molecular characters. Both are threatened species currently included into an ongoing ex situ conservation programme, as their habitats have disappeared because of damming and the filling up of the Yacyretá Reservoir in the early 1990s. We used DNA sequences from cytochrome b and cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) genes to estimate their genetic distances, and the COI sequences were also used to assess their specific status under the evolutionary genetic species concept by means of the K/θ method.

We find that T. abrupta was fast-growing, long-lived, and comparatively effective at resisting predation. T. abrupta was notably widespread geographically and temporally, but was a relatively rare component of faunas when compared with co-occurring turritellids. High rates of shell carbonate construction (in excess of 35 g in the first year of life) likely depended on habitats conducive to calcification. Late Miocene cooling and eastern Pacific carbonate limitation are implicated in the range contraction and eventual extinction of this species.
