ERIE$ FORMATION SERYKE No. 94 THE PRAWN, FISH AND MOLLUSCAN SEED RESOURCES ALONG THE KERALA AND TAMILNADU COASTS* Introduction Six teams of scientists and technical personnel operated the project from six different research centres The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, along the coast namely Calicut, Cochin, Vizhinjam, Cochin launched a pioneering research project during Tuticorin, Mandapam and Madras. Sampling stations the period 1976-'80 on the seed resources of commer were fixed all along the coastal area at every 6 to 10 km cially important prawns, fishes and molluscs in the distance. However, within the estuaries and backwaters surf waters, estuaries and backwaters of Kerala and sampling was carried out at shorter intervals of distance. Tamilnadu. The objective of the project was to gain Along with the collection of seed samples, environ precise information regarding occurrence and quanti mental parameters such as temperature, salinity and tative abundance of seed, their spatial, seasonal and dissolved oxygen were also monitored. While a variety diurnal variations, abundance in relation to lunar perio of gears were used for the qualitative studies, the quan dicities, influence of environmental features and pollu titative estimates were made by employing the bucket- tion on them and areas suitable for brackishwater cul scoop net method in the surf area and a specially desi ture. gned quantitative seed sampler developed at the Insti tute in the estuaries and backwaters. Voluminous The investigations were carried out in three phases. data were collected during the investigations and the During the first phase (1976-'78) emphasis was given results are being published in the form of a bulletin.

Marine Fisheries Information Service Technical & Extension Series From the Editorial Board Warm greeting to all our esteemed readers As apex predators in the oceans, marine mammals play a key role in the marine food web dynamics and ecosystem balance. As they are affected by fishery (by-catch in fishing gears, collision with fishing vessels) and non-fishery (climate change, hunting, habitat degradation) factors, their conservation and management becomes complex. Globally, species specific database on marine mammals is scanty and the lead article in this issue of MFIS, takes a look at the taxonomic issues of marine mammals in the Indian EEZ which is vital for formulating their stock management strategies.
