Central Seventh-day Adventist Church Job Description- Duties of the Deaconess As Jesus gives insight into the nature of His Church using the symbol of the body in 1 Corinthians 12, so it is that when we join the Church we become "members" of the body of Christ and are equipped for specific functions by the Holy Spirit. God wills that the various "body parts" (members) function effectively toward the common goal of the Church; making disciples of Jesus Christ. It is an erroneous concept that the clergy have a "sacred calling" and the general membership only a "secular calling." This concept impedes the progress of the church by leading some to believe their contributions are less important. In fact, the New Testament teaches that all members of the body of Christ are ministers of Jesus Christ. There are necessary differences in function, but the status of all leaders is the same. You have been asked to serve as a deaconess in the church. The God who calls is able to sustain you as you cooperate with Him. Duties of the Deaconess The ministry to which a person is called when she becomes a deaconess includes the following duties: 1) Report to Head Deaconess. Deaconess will assist in maintaining the smooth operation of church meetings. Any needs and/or concerns should be reported to the Head Deaconess as soon as possible so that they could be addressed in an adequate manner. A quarterly meeting is to be scheduled by the Head Deaconess to address various issues and provide training. 2) Head Deaconess will coordinate fellowship meals. -

Faithful Stewards of the Mysteries of God Report of the General Secretary Jerome King Del Pino Meeting of the Board of Directors General Board of Higher Education and Ministry October 13, 2005 Nashville, Tennessee hen at its gathering in 2004 General Conference brought into being the Connectional Table, it undertook a restructuring of Wour denomination’s corporate life that harbors far-reaching implications for how United Methodists will interpret and live out their mission in the twenty-first century.And to the extent that the church’s mission and ministry find expression through the work of the general agencies, the deliberations and actions of the Connectional Table will have a direct impact on the mission of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry.This is unavoidable.After all, as the Book of Discipline makes clear, the Connectional Table is the venue where “ministry and money are brought to the same table to coordinate the mission, ministries, and resources of The United Methodist Church.”1 The Connectional Table represents a powerful opportunity for revital- izing the mission and ministry of The United Methodist Church in the new century. However, ironically, it also harbors the real danger of con- tributing to the further fracturing of the United Methodist connection. I submit that whether the Connectional Table will be blessing or bane depends vitally on the willingness of the church’s leaders to subject this new confluence of “connection,”“mission,”“money,”and “ministry” to deep-running theological scrutiny.The fact is, United Methodism’s unfortu- 2 nate penchant for a distorted pragmatism that says,“If it works, let’s do it,” is a bane to our church. -

VICTOR TAYLOR, GENERAL SECRETARY BISHOP THOMAS LANIER HOYT, JR., CHAIRMAN INTRODUCTION The Fourth and final 2008 Connectional Lay Council Quarterly Program of Study is based primarily on facts outlined and recorded in Chapter 35 of the 2006 CME Church Book of Discipline. The *process and duties recorded in this chapter, pertaining to the Steward Ministry, will be presented as “principles” and my comments relative to the approach or method of addressing the principles will be presented as “practices”. One should, in reading and digesting this document, have the Book of Discipline on hand. As you begin this lesson, please consider very sincerely Section 509, of Chapter 35, under the heading of “Spiritual Expectations”. It reads as follows: God calls God’s people to various ministries. In the local congregation such ministries are fulfilled in positions of leadership. Each is vital to the church’s effort to fulfill its mission as the body of Christ in every place. Accordingly, persons placed in positions of leadership should evidence the highest level of commitment to Christ and His/Her Church by participation in public worship, Sunday Church School, opportunities for prayer and Bible study, and such spiritual disciplines as tithing of self and resources. Taking into consideration the individual and collective relationships of Stewards to the Pastor and the on-going spiritual and financial health of the church, I find that section 509 is tremendously important. -

John Wesley and the Principle of Ministerial Succession By John C. English + SUBJECT of recurring interest among Methodists is John A Wtesley's doctrine of the ministry. Succeeding generations of students have sought to derive from the ambiguous evidence a historically accurate picture of Wesley's thought on this subject. The defense of Wesley's setting apart a ministry for the Methodists in America and the British Isl'es is a staple in Methodist apologetic. Today, when many Christians from all denominations are discuss- ing the reunion of the churches, the question of the Wesleyan un- derstanding of the ministry has taken on additional significance. A common interpretation of Wesley's teaching concerning the ministry has not emerged from the extensive discussion of the question. Why is this the case? Ernst Troeltsch, in his famous book, The Social Teaching of the Christian Churches, introduces a distinction between two types of Christianity, "sect" and "church." Representatives of these types differ, among other things, in their interpretation of the ministry. In the "sect" ministerial functions are usually exercised by laymen. "Sectarians" emphasize the pneumatic and prophetic aspects of the ministry. "Churchmen," on the other hand, stress the hierarchical and -priestly - elements in th,e ministerial office. This emphasis- reflects their sacramentalist understanding of the Christian religion. By and large- students of Wesley have interpreted his doctrine of the ministry in (6 sectarian" terms. certainly one may find in Wesley's actions and writings a considerable amount of support for such a view. Many statements by Wesley, however, cannot be fitted easily into this interpretation. -

While a few studies have paid attention to individual efforts of congregations to negotiate the heated conflicts as their contribution to the denominational debate, no studies have recounted how post-1965 immigrants, often deemed as “ethnic enclaves apart from larger American society”, respond to this religious issue. Drawing on an ethnographic study of a first-generation Korean Methodist church in the Tampa Bay area, Florida, this article attempts to fill this gap in the literature. In brief, I argue that the Tampa Korean-American Methodists’ continual exposure to the Methodist Church’s larger denominational homosexuality debate and their personal relationships with gay and lesbian friends in everyday life together work to facilitate their gradual tolerance toward sexual minorities as a sign of their accommodation of individualistic and democratic values of American society. In the United Methodist Church, Clergy
Terms and Definitions Appointed / Appointment: In the United Methodist Church, clergy (ordained or licensed) are sent out to serve by the Bishop, in consultation with the Superintendents, pastors and local churches. Clergy are appointed by the bishop on a yearly basis. The church or charge to which they are sent is the appointment. Appointments can only be changed by the bishop. Assigned: Some churches are led by lay persons such as Certified Lay Ministers or Lay Minister Candidates. These persons are assigned to a church. This term is used to help identify the difference between clergy who are appointed and laity who are assigned. BOOM (sometimes BOM or the “Board”): The Board of Ordained Ministry of the Susquehanna Conference has oversight of all clergy and their relationship to the Annual Conference. The Board is charged with caring for, examining, approving, and developing passionate, joy filled leaders in the United Methodist Church. Candidate for Ministry: A person who senses a call from God and officially begins to explore the possibilities of ministry as clergy is a candidate for ministry. Certified Candidate (for Ministry): A candidate for ministry, who has completed the candidacy studies, has been approved by his/her Charge Conference and has been approved by the DCOM. A certified candidate may attend Licensing School or Seminary (or both). Certified Lay Minister: A lay person who has completed the entrance and course requirements for the CLM program and has been certified by the DCOM. A CLM may preach, teach, help with administration, conduct funerals, and visit the sick or other duties as described in a covenant with the church or charge. -
