Paper Number: 63 May 2007 Before and after the Fall: Mapping Hong Kong Cantopop in the Global Era Stephen Yiu-wai Chu Hong Kong Baptist University The author welcome comments from readers. Contact details: Stephen Yiu-wai Chu, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong Email: [email protected] David C. Lam Institute for East-West Studies (LEWI) Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) LEWI Working Paper Series is an endeavour of David C. Lam Institute for East-West Studies (LEWI), a consortium with 28 member universities, to foster dialogue among scholars in the field of East-West studies. Globalisation has multiplied and accelerated inter-cultural, inter-ethnic, and inter-religious encounters, intentionally or not. In a world where time and place are increasingly compressed and interaction between East and West grows in density, numbers, and spread, East-West studies has gained a renewed mandate. LEWI’s Working Paper Series provides a forum for the speedy and informal exchange of ideas, as scholars and academic institutions attempt to grapple with issues of an inter-cultural and global nature. Circulation of this series is free of charge. Comments should be addressed directly to authors. Abstracts of papers can be downloaded from the LEWI web page at http://www.hkbu.edu.hk/~lewi/publications.html. Manuscript Submission: Scholars in East-West studies at member universities who are interested in submitting a paper for publication should send an article manuscript, preferably in a Word file via e-mail, as well as a submission form (available online) to the Series Secretary at the address below. -

D10 life | THE STRAITS TIMES | MONDAY, JULY 13, 2015 | Tsai Chin, storyteller extraordinaire REVIEW/CONCERT CAI QIN SINGAPORE CONCERT 2015 AUSPICIOUS SIGNS TheStar Theatre, The Star Performing Arts Centre/ Last Saturday Theresa Tan Taiwanese evergreen singer Cai Qin, or Tsai Chin, to her English-speaking fans, is a stunner. She is not known for her looks, but for her sultry powerhouse vocals in a career spanning more than 30 years. She wowed the audience at her sold-out concert when she appeared slimmer, sharper and striking in a shimmery purple gown. The 57-year-old told the 5,000-strong audience: “I’m the real deal. My looks improve as I age.” She kicked off her performance with the concert’s upbeat theme song Auspicious Signs. And it was a sign of good things to come. For the 1 next 2 /2 hours, she teased and pleased the baby-boomer crowd. An old hand at entertaining, she did not just sing. She told stories of her life. She made you laugh. She got you to sing along. And she got you wanting more. Tsai dedicated her first segment to oldies such as Shen Mi Nu Lang (Mysterious Lady), Luo Hua Liu Shui (Falling Flower, Running Water) and Foolishly Waiting (Chi Chi De Deng). Her take on the melancholic Foolishly Waiting was hauntingly beautiful. She said the song, from the 1966 movie The Black And The Blue (Hei Yu Lan), was all the rage when she was a child and her parents used to take her and her three siblingsto watch live music performances. -

Shadowrun: Hong Kong
SHADOWRUN HONG KONG MEL ODOM BASED ON A STORY BY HAREBRAINED SCHEMES PROLOGUE RAYMOND BLACK The Redmond Barrens Seattle United Canadian and American States 2044 I’ll never forget the night I met Raymond Black, mostly because I’d believed Duncan was going to die and leave me all alone. Raymond Black changed that. He changed a lot of things. Me and Duncan, we’d been alone for a long time. I was a couple years older than him, so I could remember back farther than he could, but every time I did, all I could recall were the foster homes I got bounced out of regularly. The longest I’d ever stayed in one was with the Croydon family for two years. They taught me how to pick pockets, hotwire a car, fight with a blade, and pick a lock. When I turned thirteen, I used those skills to get away from them and escape into the shadows. A few months after that, I found Duncan Wu living on dumpster food in an alley. He hadn’t run away from his foster home to find something better. He’d run for his life. His foster parents had set up a deal to sell him and the three other kids to a sex slave ring. He was the only one who’d gotten away. Part of me wanted to leave him there, but I couldn’t because I knew from the shape he was in, starving and covered in sores, he wouldn’t make it on his own. So I’d taken him with me, fed him, sheltered him, and gotten him as healthy as we could be under the circumstances. -
