There are constant twists of perspective. I become dizzy, as if I were riding a roller coaster through a primeval forest. There are trees standing there like musicians, and each of their green sheets of music resembles a painting or a book. I want to stay still to study them, but it doesn’t work, and right now it’s exciting to keep pace with the music. Life doesn’t wait for us, nor does music. We still don’t miss anything. Hundreds of ghosts and monsters are hiding in these woods. They aren’t malicious, more humorous, but still so energetic that their strength can frighten a civilised human being. The figure “Oni” from Japanese folklore is more comparable to Dionysus than to a devil.

Catalogue 2009/10 ECM Paul Griffiths Bread and Water Here is someone standing at the entrance to the gallery who goes on talking all the time while almost all the visitors who come are rushing by in their eagerness to inspect what is on show inside. The hall a little way beyond is packed with rare and wonderful things, beautifully laid out and informatively labelled. There is much to see, much to learn. This is what the visitors have come for. Why, then, linger at the doorway? Why wait? But you, you have stopped. Thank you. Yes, this is the gallery, this the exhibition: a catalogue. We can use the word either to mean this paper object you hold in your hands or the totality of items a publisher or, as in this case, record company has available for sale: the CATALOGUE, as we may put it. Such a CATALOGUE is changeable as the ocean is: things will go (though rarely, where ECM is concerned), more will come. The catalogue, on the other hand, is fixed, a photograph of the ocean. There was a moment, probably before it reached print, when the catalogue was identical with the CATALOGUE. But that moment has passed and will not come again, for the ocean is growing and the photograph cannot. Is the catalogue therefore impoverished? No, no more than a photograph is. This is no snapshot, no fuzzy image trapped half_thoughtlessly on a mobile phone. Look at what you have in your hands: this is something well made, something composed. A professional photographer must have been invited to make a study of the ocean.

Regularly referenced as one of the pioneering exponents of a ‘European jazz’, the Lyon-born clarinettist, saxophonist and composer has investigated and explored a broad swathe of music - and other arts - in largely intuitive and non-dogmatic ways. His story is by no means all about jazz: on disc, he’s paid homage to Duke Ellington, but also to Baroque composer Jean-Philippe Rameau, to filmmaker Charles Vanel, to painter/collage artist Ernest Pignon-Ernest. At different times his spirit of inquiry has brought him into the orbit of free improvisers, folk musicians, interpreters of contemporary composition, and more. Sclavis stands out today as one of the players who has found his own clear voice – making international music from a European perspective, inside an ever-changing ensemble sound. Reinvention is a big part of his work, and with each release he redraws the map of his music. With “Lost on the Way”, Sclavis turns to Homer for his titles, likening his voyage to Ulysses’ long journey home: “This new project was born out of the wish to continue the work begun with the preceding quintet on "L'imparfait des langues" [recorded 2005], and to invent new musics to play and to lose oneself in. INTAKT RECORDS CATALOGUE 2015 253 30 Jahre Intakt Records. 253 Veröffentlichungen sind es im Frühling 2015, keine runde Zahl. Wir sind mitten im Prozess. Der Katalog in dieser Form ist morgen schon überholt. Die Musik ist im Fluss, und die Produktionsarbeit geht weiter. «First Meeting» heisst das erste Stück der ersten Platte von Intakt Records, aufgenommen 1984: Ein Duo der Zürcher Pianistin Irène Schweizer mit dem Chicagoer/New Yorker Posaunisten George Lewis eröffnet die Intakt-Serie auf «Irène Schweizer Live at Taktlos». Die Schallplatte erscheint 1986 und ist die Initialzündung für das neue Label. Es folgt das Doppelalbum mit den Kompositio- nen von Barry Guy und Anthony Braxton, gespielt vom London Jazz Composers Orchestra.
