To wyjątkowe wydarzenie, które połączyło znany nam od lat Festiwal Rozstaje i EURORADIO Folk Festival. Kraków zawsze przyjaźnie witał gości przynoszących tu swoją kulturę i obyczaje. Położony na skrzyżowaniu ważnych szlaków handlowych, przez wieki czerpał swą siłę także ze stałego od- nawiania związków z innymi narodami. Jednym z najsłynniejszych krakowskich zabytków jest ołtarz niemieckiego mistrza Wita Stwosza; potęgę królewskiego miasta budował litewski wład- ca Polski Władysław Jagiełło wraz ze swoją węgierską żoną – królową Jadwigą, inna zaś królowa Bona Sforza tu właśnie przywiozła włoskich mistrzów renesansu. Tu przez wieki funkcjonowało żydowskie miasto, a następnie dzielnica Krakowa – Kazimierz. Muzyka zainspirowana bogactwem kultury ludowej ma w stolicy Małopolski nie tylko wspa- niałą historię, ale i licznych współczesnych miłośników i wykonawców. Na ulicach i muzycznych scenach miasta można usłyszeć dźwięki tradycyjnej muzyki klezmerskiej czy góralskiej, a także niezwykły stop rytmów narodów Europy Środkowej, od Bałkanów po współczesną Ukrainę. Tę wyjątkowość i pokrewieństwo muzyki na linii wyznaczonej górzystym pasmem Karpat dostrze- gli i od lat podkreślają organizatorzy Festiwalu Rozstaje, jednego z najciekawszych polskich Jacek Majchrowski wydarzeń world music. Do rangi symbolu urasta fakt, że większość wydarzeń Festiwalu Etno- Kraków odbędzie się właśnie na Kazimierzu – w miejscu tradycyjnie otwartym na różnorodne muzyczne światy – tuż po zakończeniu Festiwalu Kultury Żydowskiej. Jest nam szczególnie miło powitać międzynarodowe grono kilkudziesięciu wykonawców za- proszonych do Krakowa z inicjatywy Europejskiej Unii Nadawców. Możliwość współpracy z tą zasłużoną organizacją to dla nas zaszczyt i wyróżnienie, ale także przykład konsekwentnego zacieśniania związków. Sztandarowe krakowskie wydarzenia muzyczne – takie jak festiwale Misteria Paschalia i Sacrum Profanum czy cykl Opera Rara – są od lat obecne na antenach roz- głośni zrzeszonych w EBU: tym przyjemniej jest nam dzisiaj gościć ich przedstawicieli u siebie. Szczególnie cieszę się na ponowną współpracę z polskim radiem publicznym, w szczególności z Dwójką i Radiem Kraków. W roku dziewięćdziesiątych urodzin polskiej radiofonii trudno o lep- szy prezent dla jej wiernych słuchaczy. Kraków z radością włącza się w organizację tego wyjątkowego przedsięwzięcia. Majka / UMK JACEK MAJCHROWSKI Prezydent Miasta Krakowa 5 EN Ladies and Gentlemen, We are delighted to welcome you to the EtnoKraków Festival – a celebration of the European Broad- casting Union hosted by our city for the first time. This unique event combines the well-established Crossroads Festival with the EURORADIO Folk Festival. Kraków has always been welcoming to visitors, their cultures and customs. Located at the crossroads of major trade routes, for centuries it has also drawn strength from renewing links with other nations. One of the most famous Cracovian relics is the altar made by the German master craftsman Veit Stoss, the royal city’s might was built by the Lithuanian king Władysław Jagiełło with his Hungarian consort queen Jadwiga, while another queen – Bona Sforza – brought with her Italian Renaissance masters. For centuries, a separate Jewish city of Kazimierz functioned here, now a district of Kraków. Music inspired by the wealth of folk culture has a great history here, as well as having many con- temporary fans and performers. Our streets and music stages resound with traditional klezmer and highlander music, and the extraordinary rhythms of nations from throughout Central Europe, from the Balkans to present-day Ukraine. This uniqueness and affinity of music originating from the mountain- ous Carpathian arc has been noted and emphasised by the organisers of the Crossroads Festival, one of Poland’s best events focusing on world music. It is notable that most of the events held as part of the EtnoKraków Festival are hosted in Kazimierz – a district long tied with many musical worlds – just Jacek Majchrowski after the end of the Jewish Culture Festival. We are delighted to welcome the international group of dozens of performers invited to Kraków on the initiative of the European Broadcasting Union. We are proud and honoured to be working with this important organisation, and it serves as testament of our consistently strengthening ties. Kraków’s flagship music events – such as the Misteria Paschalia and Sacrum Profanum festivals, and the Opera Rara cycle – have long been broadcast by stations belonging to the EBU, and we are delighted to be welcoming their representatives. I am especially happy to be working once again with Poland’s national radio, in particular Radio 2 and Radio Kraków. In the year of the 90th anniversary of Polish radiophony, it is difficult to imagine a better present for its loyal listeners. Kraków is thrilled to be involved in the organisation of this unique event. Dźwięki zaczerpnięte z tradycji i fascynacja folklorem, połączone z potrzebą indywidualnej ekspresji i inwencji wykonawców, stały się fascynującym zjawiskiem nie tylko muzycznym, ale również kulturowym i społecznym wspieranym przez radiową Dwójkę i jej Radiowe Centrum Kultu- ry Ludowej. To właśnie z inicjatywy Programu 2 Polskiego Radia zrodziła się wspaniała idea zorganizowania pod auspicjami Europejskiej Unii Nadawców (EBU) – instytucji zrzeszającej nadawców publicznego radia i telewizji Europy – festiwalu, na którym różnorodność stylów, wy- konawców i gatunków pozwoli nam wszystkim poczuć zarówno bogactwo europejskiej kultury muzycznej, jak i tkwiącą w niej energię. Słuchanie koncertów na kilku scenach krakowskiego Kazimierza stało się możliwe dzięki życz- liwości i wsparciu Prezydenta Jacka Majchrowskiego. Efektem współpracy Polskiego Radia z Krakowskim Biurem Festiwalowym i Stowarzyszeniem „Rozstaje” jest właśnie ten Festiwal – poprzez radiofonie zrzeszone w EBU – promujący muzykę etniczną i Polskę w 59 krajach. Przy- znają Państwo, że nie sposób o tym myśleć inaczej, niż z dumą. Cieszę się, że w pięknej scenerii Andrzej Siezieniewski Kazimierza będziemy słuchać muzyki, będącej – z racji swoich kulturowych źródeł – nośnikiem wartości zarówno narodowych, jak i ogólnoludzkich. Muzyki, która daje niecodzienne poczucie wspólnoty. Ufam, że rozpoczynający się Festiwal dostarczy wszystkim wykonawcom i słucha- czom wzruszeń i satysfakcji, do których, dzięki nagraniom realizowanym przez Polskie Radio w roku jego 90-lecia, będzie można wracać nie tylko pamięcią. ANDRZEJ SIEZIENIEWSKI Prezes Polskiego Radia 9 EN Ladies and Gentlemen, For decades, Polish Radio has supported and created a musical space, in which one of the fastest growing and highly valuable genres is folk music. Sounds derived from the tradition and fascination with folklore, combined with the need for individual expression and creativity of the performers, have become a captivating phenomenon not only in terms of music, but also culturally and socially, sup- ported by Radio 2 and its Radio Folk Culture Centre. It was at the initiative of Polish Radio 2 that the great idea was born to organise a festival under the auspices of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) – an institution of public broadcasters of radio and television in Europe – where the variety of styles, artists and genres would enable us all to experience both the richness of European musical culture and its inherent energy.     OFF Festival Katowice 2018 Warsaw Village Band meets Poznań City Revival Here at the OFF Festival, we always enjoy reminiscing: there’s the 2007 debut by Muchy, and the songs of our forefathers as reinterpreted by the Warsaw Village Band. But we also look boldly into the future, as personified by a pair of excellent debut artists: Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever and Fontaines D.C. Kapela ze Wsi Warszawa – mazovian re:action No one has done more to demystify folk music in the ears of popular young audiences than the Warsaw Village Band (known in Poland as Kapela ze Wsi Warszawa), who often resort to audacious experiments that draw the ire of their own musical milieu. No one has been bolder when it comes to combining local roots with musical shoots growing all over the world and in all eras. Only they could spice up a Slavic melody with a voice from India, a solo by an Iranian virtuoso, and a electronic beat lifted from a London dance club. On Warsaw Village Band’s latest album, mazovian re:action (a late 2017 release that’s already scored a Fryderyk Award), the artists head home from their distant travels, playing Mazovian songs learned from old masters and sharing those tunes with the world. Boone, Advisor Johanna Devaney Anna Gawboy Copyright by Dana Lauren DeVlieger 2016 Abstract “Whiskey in the Jar” is a traditional Irish song that is performed by musicians from many different musical genres. However, because there are influential recordings of the song performed in different styles, from folk to punk to metal, one begins to wonder what the role of the song’s Irish heritage is and whether or not it retains a sense of Irish identity in different iterations. The current project examines a corpus of 398 recordings of “Whiskey in the Jar” by artists from all over the world. But following this anniversary there is some sad news, with the recent passing of our President, Jeanie, Countess of Carnarvon. Her energy, commitment and enthusiasm from the outset and throughout the evolution of the Festival have been fundamental to its success. The Duchess of Kent and I have seen the Festival grow from humble beginnings to an internationally renowned arts festival, having faced and overcome many obstacles along the way. Jeanie, Countess of Carnarvon, can be justly proud of the Festival’s achievements.
