PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

SUPER DIAMOND The Neil Diamond Experience "I've met them and I have been to their shows, they're wonderful!" Neil Diamond to Katie Couric on the Today Show, November 9, 2005 "Q. Super Diamond honors him..." "A. Who is Neil Diamond?" Question on Jeopardy, May 20th, 2005 San Francisco's Super Diamond has become one of the most popular live shows at major nightclubs, theaters, ballrooms and public events throughout the United States. For over a decade the band has consistently performed sell-out shows at venues such as Irving Plaza in New York, 930 Club in Washington D.C., Bimbo's in San Francisco, and House of Blues venues in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, Cleveland and Dallas to name but a few. At these venues Super Diamond has generated an exuberant audience response previously unheard of for a tribute band. Many would say that Super Diamond has transcended the label of "tribute band" by passionately immersing themselves in Neil Diamond's huge repertoire and delivering a high-octane show of unforgettable classics such as Cracklin’ Rosie, Sweet Caroline, Forever in Blue Jeans and many others. Super Diamond has also performed at landmark venues and events such as Hollywood Bowl, Taste of Chicago, Fenway Park in Boston, Coors Field in Denver and numerous fairs, festivals and corporate celebrations across the country and overseas. Super Diamond front man The Surreal Neil, Randy Cordeiro, astonishes audiences with his live interpretation of the "real Neil." Randy created the charismatic character when he discovered he had the uncanny ability to capture not only Neil Diamond's voice, but also his mannerisms and performance style.

Engleskog jezika i književnosti, OŠ “Branko Radičević” Negotin Negotin, aprila 2013. godine 1 Contents Abstract……………………………………………………………………………………3 Summary…………………………………………………………………………………..4 Introduction………………………………………………………………………………..5 Metal music………………………………………………………………………………..6 Sub-genres of Heavy Metal……………………………………………………………….10 Conclusion………………………………………………………………………………...15 2 Abstract Metal is a movement of music that started essentially with the heavy rock movements. While there was not actual metal during that time, bands were experimenting with heaviness, and it was no surprise that the first metal band (Black Sabbath) was soon to be born. Metal music is a worldwide form of music that has held the attention of younger generations for over 50 years. Metal music has branched off into different sub genres, but one thing is the main motivator for the survival of metal music through all the generations. That is a need for younger generations to rebel against the status quo, to express themselves and their frustration of an outdated way of life. This paper presents the development of metal music from the 1960s to the present day, with special emphasis on some of the metal sub-genre of music. Originally, metal was one genre. But as time passed more genres were born. Today metal is a global movement and has hundreds of sub-genres such as Heavy, Death, Black, Doom, Power, Thrash, Speed, Folk, Industrial, Symphonic, Gothic & Nu-Metal, to name just a few. They range from sheer brutality to smooth and melodic rhythms.

During the 1960s, British hard rock bands and the American guitarist Jimi Hendrix developed a more distorted guitar sound and heavier drums and bass that led to a separation of heavy metal from other blues-based rock. Albums by Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple in 1970 codified the new genre, which was marked by distorted guitar ‘power chords’, heavy riffs, wailing vocals and virtuosic solos by guitarists and drummers. • Running Head: NATIONAL IMAGERY in FINNISH FOLK METAL 1
Running head: NATIONAL IMAGERY IN FINNISH FOLK METAL 1 NATIONAL IMAGERY IN FINNISH FOLK METAL: Lyrics, Facebook and Beyond Renée Barbosa Moura Master‟s thesis Digital Culture University of Jyväskylä Department of Art and Culture Studies Jyväskylä 2014 NATIONAL IMAGERY IN FINNISH FOLK METAL 2 UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ Faculty Department Humanities Art and Culture Studies Author Renée Barbosa Moura Title National Imagery in FFM: Lyrics, Facebook and Beyond Subject Level Digital Culture MA Thesis Month and year Number of pages June 2014 90 pages Abstract Folk metal is a music genre originated from heavy metal music. For many artists and fans, folk metal is more than just music: it is a way of revitalising tradition. Folk metal is then a genre which is closely related to individual‟s cultural identities. As part of popular culture, heavy metal has been investigated for instance in the fields of cultural studies and psychology. Andrew Brown investigates how heavy metal emerged as subject for academic research. Deena Weinstein approaches heavy metal as culture and behaviour that is shared by individuals from different cultural backgrounds. However, subgenres like folk metal have not yet been explored in depth by academics. Analysing folk metal‟s nuances in specific national contexts would provide further knowledge on national cultures and identities. One example of folk metal reflecting elements of national culture is Finnish folk metal. The bands whose works belong to this genre usually draw from Finnish culture to compose their works, which usually feature stories from a variety of traditional sources such as the epic book Kalevala. Such stories are then transposed into new media, disseminating the artists‟ concept of Finnishness.
