By 1970s much damage to US/Canada elms killed throughout eastern and central USA O. novo-ulmi has gradually replaced O. ulmi in both North America and Europe more fit species replacing a less fit species O. novo-ulmi able to capture greater proportion of resource O. novo-ulmi probably more adapted to cooler climate than O. ulmi During replacement, O. ulmi and O. novo-ulmi occur in close proximity and can hybridize. Hybrids are not competitive, but may allow gene flow from O. ulmi to O. novo-ulmi by introgression: Backcrossing of hybrids of two plant populations to introduce new genes into a wild population Vegetative compatibility genes heterogenic incompatibility multiple loci prevents spread of cytoplasmic viruses O. novo-ulmi arrived as a single vc type, but rapidly acquired both new vc loci AND virus, probably from hybridizing with O. -

Road, RAU, Indore, India Email: [email protected] Paper No. 182 Received: December 25, 2013 Accepted: February 23, 2014 Published: March 01, 2014 Abstract Pseudomonas fluorescens 0.5% W.P. formulation applied as seed and furrow (soil application) in Chilli significantly reduced the damping off disease of chilli caused by P. aphanidermatum. The yield of chilli was also significantly enhanced. The formulation did not have any phyto-toxic effect on chilli plants at all the dosage levels tested for bioefficacy. The Pseudomonas fluorescens 0.5% W.P. application had no adverse effect on the beneficial rhizospheric microbes, like Arbuscular Mycorrhizae (Glomus spp.) in chilli rhizosphere at all dosages which were confirmed by microscopic observations. Based on the above findings, the Pseudomonas fluorescens 0.5% W.P. formulation is found safe and effective and may be used as an efficient & eco-safe alternative of synthetic fungicides for the management of damping off disease of chilli and for obtaining higher yields. The Genus Pythium in Mainland China

The genus Pythium in mainland China HO Hon-Hing* Department of Biology, State University of New York, New Paltz, New York 12561, USA Abstract: A historical review of studies on the genus Pythium in mainland China was conducted, covering the occurrence, distribution, taxonomy, pathogenicity, plant disease control and its utilization. To date, 64 species of Pythium have been reported and 13 were described as new to the world: P. acrogynum, P. amasculinum, P. b ai sen se , P. boreale, P. breve, P. connatum, P. falciforme, P. guiyangense, P. guangxiense, P. hypoandrum, P. kummingense, P. nanningense and P. sinensis. The dominant species is P. aphanidermatum causing serious damping off and rotting of roots, stems, leaves and fruits of a wide variety of plants throughout the country. Most of the Pythium species are pathogenic with 44 species parasitic on plants, one on the red alga, Porphyra: P. porphyrae, two on mosquito larvae: P. carolinianum and P. guiyangense and two mycoparasitic: P. nunn and P. oligandrum. In comparison, 48 and 28 species have been reported, respectively, from Taiwan and Hainan Island with one new species described in Taiwan: P. sukuiense. The prospect of future study on the genus Pythium in mainland China was discussed. Division: Zygomycota
Division: Zygomycota Zygomycota members are characterized by primitive coenocytic hyphae. More than 1050 Zygomycota species currently exist. They are mostly terrestrial in habitat, living in soil or on decaying plant or animal material. Some are parasites of plants, insects, and small animals, while others form symbiotic relationships with plants. Members of the division possess the ability to reproduce both sexually and asexually. Asexual spores include chlamydoconidia, conidia, and sporangiospores contained in sporangia borne on simple or branched sporangiophores. Sexual reproduction is isogamous producing a thick-walled sexual resting spore called a zygospore. Systematics of Zygomycota Two classes are recognized in this division; the Trichomycetes and Zygomycetes. Class: Zygomycetes Characteristics of the class are the same as those of the division. The class contains 6 orders, 29 families, 120 genera, approximately 800 species. Order: Endogonales The order includes only one family, four genera and 27 species. Its members are distinguished by their production of small sporocarps that are eaten by rodents and distributed by their feces. Order: Entomophthorales Most members of the order are pathogens of insects. A few attack nematodes, mites, and tardigrades, and some are saprotrophs. Genus: Entomophthora Members of the genus are parasitic on flies and other two-winged insects. Order: Kickxellales The order contains single family and eight genera. Order: Mucorales Mucorales, also known as pin molds, is the largest order of the class Zygomycetes. The order includes 13 families, 56 genera, 300 species. Most of its members are saprotrophic and grow on organic substrates. Some species are parasites or pathogens of animals, plants, and fungi. A few species cause human and animal disease zygomycosis, as well as allergic reactions. -

Table beet production in the Lockyer Valley of south-eastern Queensland is known to be adversely affected by soilborne root disease from infection by Pythium spp. However, little is known regarding the species or genotypes that are the causal agents of both pre- and post-emergence damping off. Based on RFLP analysis with HhaI, HinfI and MboI of the PCR amplified ITS region DNA from soil and diseased plant samples, the majority of 130 Pythium isolates could be grouped into three genotypes, designated LVP A, LVP B and LVP C. These groups comprised 43, 41 and 7% of all isolates, respectively. Deoxyribonucleic acid sequence analysis of the ITS region indicated that LVP A was a strain of Pythium aphanidermatum, with greater than 99% similarity to the corresponding P. aphanidermatum sequences from the publicly accessible databases. -

This project aimed to determine if pathogenic Pythium species are harbored in greenhouse recycled irrigation water tanks and to determine the ecology of the Pythium species found in these tanks. In previous research, an extensive water survey was performed on the recycled irrigation water tanks of two commercial greenhouses in Pennsylvania that experience frequent poinsettia crop loss due to Pythium aphanidermatum. In that work, only a preliminary identification of the baited species was made. Here, detailed analyses of the isolates were conducted. The Pythium and Phytopythium species recovered during the survey by baiting the water were identified and assessed for pathogenicity in lab and greenhouse experiments. The Pythium species found during the tank surveys were: a species genetically very similar to P. sp. nov. OOMYA1702-08 in Clade B2, two distinct species of unknown identity in Clade E2, P. -

Three substrata, dung of Sylvilagus fioridanus, leaf mulch and rotting logs, from wooded areas in central Iowa are investigated for nematode-destroying fungi. Fifteen species are newly recorded for Iowa as follows: Acrostalagmus bactrosporus, Arthrobotrys cladodes var. macroides, A. dactyloides, A. robusta, Cystopage lateralis, Dactylaria wndida, D. haptotyla, Dactylella bembicoides, D. ellipsospora., Harposporium helicoides, Meristacrum asterospermum, Nemaloctonus lzaptocladus, N. leiosporus, N. robusta, and Stylopage hadm. Eight previously reported species are isolated. A species resembling N emat.octonus leiosporus but witb shorter spores which were often hooked at the terminal end was found. All three substrata proved highly productive. -
