Villarreal Cf Middlesbrough Fc PRESS KITS Group stage - Group E - Matchday 3 Thursday, 25 November 2004 - 21:00 (local time) El Madrigal - Villarreal VILLARREAL CF MIDDLESBROUGH FC MATCH OFFICIALS Referee Jan W. Wegereef (HOL) Assistant referees Jaap J.N. Pool (HOL), Gyuri W.A. Takacs (HOL) Fourth official Tom Van Sichem (HOL) UEFA delegate Pierino L.G. Lardi (SUI) MATCH BACKGROUND European 'novices' seek to extend impressive start Middlesbrough FC take their fine unbeaten start in their first season of UEFA club competitions to Spanish club Villarreal CF, who were semi-finalists last season. Common denominator The common denominator so far in the group games for these clubs has been S.S. Lazio. Villarreal managed a draw in the opening game with Lazio after José Mari Romero had given them a fourth-minute lead, only to see the same player sent off after 75 minutes, and the Italians were able to fight back to force a 1-1 draw. While Villarreal were then exempt from the second round of games, Middlesbrough hosted Lazio at the Riverside and two Boudewijn Zenden goals completed a 2-0 win, to add to their opening success by 1-0 at Egaleo FC. First meeting The clubs meet for the first time in UEFA club competitions, and this is the first time the teams will have met a club from each other’s country. Villarreal are in only their second campaign after reaching the UEFA Cup semi-final on their European debut last season. The club have come through as one of the three UEFA Intertoto Cup winners this term and will be playing their 12th European game of the season. Unbeaten start Middlesbrough, the 2003/04 English League Cup winners, have yet to taste defeat in their debut season. In the first round, the newcomers disposed of FK Baník Ostrava 3-0 at the Riverside, and held on to a 1-1 draw in the return leg. A goal from Stewart Downing gave Middlesbrough their win at Egaleo in their opening group game before Zenden’s brace proved the difference against Lazio. Middlesbrough have conceded one goal in their opening four European games. 1/11 16:11:59 uefa.com Matchday 3 - Group E - Thursday, 25 November 2004 - PRESS KITS VILLARREAL-MIDDLESBROUGH PLAYERS PROFILES Villarreal CF Goalkeepers No Name Nat. Olimpico Stadium, Rome 21/10/2004 21:00:00 (Local Time) UEFA Cup Group E, Matchday 1 S.S. Lazio v Villarreal CF MATCH OFFICIALS Referee Michael Weiner (GER) Assistant Referee Markus Scheibel (GER) Assistant Referee Olaf Blumenstein (GER) Fourth Referee Stefan Trautmann (GER) UEFA Delegate Bernard Carrel (SUI) Referee Observer Muhittin Bosat (TUR) Reporter Francesco Corda (ITA) MATCH BACKGROUND Though Italian and Spanish clubs have met on a regular basis in UEFA club competitions since 1955, it is the first time that both S.S. Lazio and Villarreal CF have met each other. Vast experience A Spanish club provided the opposition for Lazio’s finest achievement, when, coached by Sven-Göran Eriksson, they won the last UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1998/99 with a 2-1 win over RCD Mallorca at Villa Park. This will be the 12th game between Lazio and Spanish clubs in UEFA club competitions and Lazio have four wins, five defeats and two draws from the previous matches. The 2003/04 Coppa Italia winners have made a resolute start to this season’s campaign with two 3-0 wins over Ukrainian club FC Metalurh Donetsk to reach the group stage. Strong impression Villarreal made a strong impression in last season’s UEFA Cup, reaching the semi-finals before losing to the eventual winners Valencia CF 1-0 on aggregate with only a Mista penalty separating the sides. On their way to the latter stages, Villarreal met AS Roma in the fourth round winning 3-2 on aggregate after Sonny Anderson won the tie with a goal in a 2-1 defeat at the Stadio Olimpico.

  • FC Steaua Bucuresti V Real Betis Balompié PRESS KIT
FC Steaua Bucuresti v Real Betis Balompié PRESS KIT Lia Manoliu, Bucharest Thursday, 9 March 2006 - 19:00 local time Round of 16 - Matchday 10 FC Steaua Bucuresti were undone by Spanish opposition at this stage of the UEFA Cup last season, but will be looking to avoid the same fate when they line up against Real Betis Balompié in the last 16. Almost 12 months ago to the day the Romanian side saw their hopes ended by Villarreal CF at El Madrigal as Argentinian playmaker Juan Román Riquelme led the home team to a 2-0 victory. •A 3-1 first-leg victory proved enough to see Steaua negotiate their way through their first knockout round tie against SC Heerenveen. Nicolae Dica, Dorin Goian and Sorin Paraschiv were all on target as Cosmin Olaroiu's team recovered from conceding an early Arnold Bruggink goal in the Netherlands and although Heerenveen pulled one goal back in Bucharest, it was Steaua that progressed. It was the continuation of some fine form in this competition by the former European champions, who breezed through the group stage after an unbeaten campaign that brought eight points, including comprehensive victories against RC Lens and Halmstads BK - both at home. •Betis were also indebted to a two-goal first-leg lead as they edged past AZ Alkmaar to secure a place in the last 32. Brazilian pair Diego Tardelli and Robert were both on target as late goals earned the side a significant advantage in Seville, which the Dutch team clawed back at the Alkmaarderhout to take the tie to extra time.

Hamburger SV won their opening game 1-0 at PFC CSKA Sofia thanks to a Rafael van der Vaart goal, while Viking FK secured a fine home win against the 2004 UEFA Champions League finalists AS Monaco FC, Nkosinathi Nhleko scoring the only goal in another 1-0 success. •Despite beginning their European adventure in the 1960/61 season, Hamburg now face Norwegian opposition for the first time. The German side completed a hat-trick of losing major finals when they lost to IFK Göteborg in the 1981/82 UEFA Cup final, 4-0 on aggregate. •Viking have met German clubs in five previous ties in UEFA competition, and have come out on top only once, against 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, now VfB Leipzig but then of the East German league, with a win on away goals in the 1982/83 UEFA Cup first round.
