Leande r New s Leander Club Newslette r Winter 2011 Leander Crews on Top Form Henley Royal Regatta is one of the high points of the Leander season, and one that all the athletes look forward to. Visitors and athletes alike feel the build up to the Regatta from early spring as soon as work starts on the course and facilities. Once the event entries are in and the qualifiers over with, the tension begins to mount and at the draw in Henley Town Hall you will see many Leander tracksuits waiting excitedly to see who they have drawn for the first races. This year, spectators were not disappointed as Leander athletes were again involved in some fantastic races and had some well deserved wins. Our success started with Nick Middleton and Jack Hockley who, following their win in the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup last year, Captain Richard Egington teamed up with Alan Sinclair and John Collins leads the way with a win to take the trophy for a second year. Coached in the Stewards’ again by Matt Beechey, this is the first time Challenge Cup. since the event’s conception that it has been won by one club in consecutive years. We always look forward to watching the OB’s take on our 1st VIII in our annual fixture. With stronger winds that are Included in this newsletter are some highlights from last terms races and a provisional list of dates for this terms races. usually found on the Tideway it made for two fun races and kept the coxes busy. However, maybe the previous days Schools’ Head (15th March 2019) racing at Schools Head played a part in the results with a very high standard OB’s VIII winning both races this year. Like two years ago the winds played a huge part in this years Schools’ Head. Unfortunately because of the high winds forecast the organisers had to take the difficult decision to reduce the number of crews racing for safety reasons. Well done to all our boys who took on the Tideway but special mention must go to the Colts A crew on winning the J16 1st 8 in an exceptionally tight race with just 0.6 seconds separating them from two other crews. This is the first time in the Schools history that the J16s have won this event. The J14s participated in their first big event at the Junior Sculling at Dorney Lake. -

Women’s Eights Head of the River Race Press Release WEHoRR – 74th Race features Olympians, British and overseas internationals and new victory ceremony. The 74th running of the Women’s Eights Head has received a total of 291 entries. On Saturday 15th March at 3:30pm, the 74th Women’s Head will take place from Mortlake to Putney. With the wettest Winter the UK has experienced since records began, many rowers have had their training disrupted and head races have been cancelled across the country. In recent weeks, the stream conditions on the Tideway have also been affected by the large volume of water from upriver. Providing the weather is favourable on race day, the stream should make for some very quick times and potentially allow course records to be broken. In a new format for 2014, the prizegiving for the race will be held on the same day on Putney Embankment, which represents not just a first for the Women’s Head, but a first for all the major Tideway Heads. The field has a strong showing from current and former international rowers, with no fewer than 11 Olympic Medallists in the field, who between them share 7 Gold, 7 Silver and 3 Bronze medals from Olympic regattas stretching from Los Angeles in 1984 through to London 2012. The race for the Head Pennant is likely to come down to a duel between the two British Squad boats. These comprise a composite crew featuring the likes of Gold Medallists Katherine Copeland, Heather Stanning and Helen Glover, racing against Leander Club, with Olympic Silver Medallist Frances Houghton in the five seat, and stroked by 2013 World Champion Polly Swann. -

BANKSIDE POWER STATION: PLANNING, POLITICS AND POLLUTION Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leicester by Stephen Andrew Murray Centre for Urban History University of Leicester 2014 Bankside Power Station ii Bankside Power Station: Planning, Politics and Pollution Stephen Andrew Murray Abstract Electricity has been a feature of the British urban landscape since the 1890s. Yet there are few accounts of urban electricity undertakings or their generating stations. This history of Bankside power station uses government and company records to analyse the supply, development and use of electricity in the City of London, and the political, economic and social contexts in which the power station was planned, designed and operated. The close-focus adopted reveals issues that are not identified in, or are qualifying or counter-examples to, the existing macro-scale accounts of the wider electricity industry. Contrary to the perceived backwardness of the industry in the inter-war period this study demonstrates that Bankside was part of an efficient and profitable private company which was increasingly subject to bureaucratic centralised control. Significant decision-making processes are examined including post-war urban planning by local and central government and technological decision-making in the electricity industry. The study contributes to the history of technology and the environment through an analysis of the technologies that were proposed or deployed at the post-war power station, including those intended to mitigate its impact, together with an examination of their long-term effectiveness. Bankside made a valuable contribution to electricity supplies in London until the 1973 Middle East oil crisis compromised its economic viability. -

Sands End Revisited a Local History Guide
SANDS END REvisitED A Local HISToRy GuIDE We found useful information at the Archive and Local History centre in Hammersmith. There were people that came into school and helped us with our research because they had been residents in Sands End or pupils at Langford many years ago. We also went to Elizabeth Barnes Court Old People’s home to hear more stories and memories of people who knew Sands End in the past. Some of the places in Sands End are named after people that lived here, for example Bagley’s Lane, is named after the Bagley family, locally well known for market gardening and were called the ‘Kings of Fulham’. Elaysha This local history guide about the Sands End area, has been compiled by Y6 from Langford Primary school. Working in partnership with Hammersmith and Fulham Urban Studies Centre, LBHF’s Archives and Local History Centre, and local interest group Sands End Revisited, Oak class became ‘History Detectives’ and were taken back in time to discover the stories of Sands End and the changes that have taken place over the years. By visiting local landmarks, such as the Community Centre on Broughton Road - which was once the old Sunlight laundry - examining old photos at the Archives, and sharing the memories of former local residents and pupils of Langford School, the children discovered a wealth of information, learnt about the changes that have taken place over the years and tried to uncover any secrets about the local area. The stories presented here are a mixture of fact, personal experience, and maybe a little bit of urban myth thrown in to really get you thinking! Thanks to Heritage Lottery Fund for the grant to produce the project. -
