Takes 8 min to walk. See page 100 of your A-Z map. Putney Bridge area You’re in Fulham, but once you cross Putney Bridge you’re in Putney. The second permanent bridge in London was built between Fulham and Putney in 1729 (only after London Bridge). Fulham is within easy reach of locations like Chelsea and Kensington and by London standards you’re in Jim and Joe’s neighborhood (30 min walk away). The King’s Road through Chelsea which becomes New King’s Road in Fulham, then Putney Bridge Approach was once a private road for royalty to get to palaces south of the River Thames. See pages 86 and 100 of your A-Z map. Getting around by Tube Putney Bridge station is located on the Wimbledon branch of the District line. You can travel directly into the city using the District line including places like South Kensington, St. James Park (Buckingham Palace), Westminster (Parliament, Westminster Abbey), Embankment (Trafalgar Square), Mansion House (St Paul’s Cathedral), Tower Hill (Tower Bridge often confused as London Bridge). Remember when you’re returning to Putney Bridge get the Wimbledon branch back. Otherwise, you’ll need to change at Earl’s Court station. You can transfer at Earl’s Court to the Piccadilly line, for Knightsbridge, Green Park, Leicester Square, Covent Garden, King’s Cross, etc. Last Tube is at approximately midnight, but many buses run throughout night. Key bus routes 141414 - Goes down Fulham Road, through South Kensington including the Natural History Museum and V&A, Knightsbridge including Harrods, Hyde Park Corner, Piccadilly Circus, ending relatively close to Regent’s Park 222222 - Follows the King’s Road through Chelsea, Knightsbridge including Harrods, Hyde Park Corner, Green Park, Piccadilly Circus. This is also the N22 route you can take on Saturday night from the reception to Putney Bridge as it runs all night. 747474 - Heads in the direction of where Jim and Joe live, through Earl’s Court, Hyde Park Corner, Marble Arch, Oxford Street, Baker Street, Regent’s Park You have to hail buses at bus stops; they don’t automatically stop. Nearby attractions (see pages 86 or 100 of your A-Z map) Fulham PalacePalace**** / Bishop’s Park From the 11th century to 1975 it was home to London’s Bishop and still owned by the Church of England. There’s now a museum of the palace’s history and botanical garden in the surrounding grounds. Craven Cottage, Fulham FC Craven Cottage was originally a royal hunting lodge, but has been home to Fulham Football Club since 1896 and is one of the smallest Premiership stadiums. Fulham plays Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on the 21st so you’ll likely run into fans. Hurlingham ClubClub**** An exclusive sports and social club featuring Georgian architecture. On Saturday you can participate in a tour at 11 am through Open House London (you should arrive 15 mins early). There’s some rivalry between the Queen’s Club where the ceremony will take place and Hurlingham Club. Few before have gone to both in the same day! Hurlingham Park A sports ground best known for Monty Python’s Upper Class Twit of the Year Sketch. All Saints ChurchChurch**** There has been a church on this site for more than 900 years where many former bishops have been buried. Putney Bridge is the only bridge in Britain with a church on either side.
