It is also always a delight to direct for all of the reasons that make it so beloved. The entire spectrum of emotions are on David & Verne Takagi display here…humor, passion, poignant loss… it makes us want salute the more. We want to turn the next page and see how these characters cope with all that we have experienced thus far. Hawaii Opera Theatre I would argue that La Bohème was the “Friends” of its time. The relationships are in its 50th season, painted with much humor and genuine warmth… The boisterous boys calling up to Rodolfo as he realizes his feelings for Mimi, the fire that grows within Marcello as he inspiring us with works watches Musetta behaving badly, the stark and painful conversation Rodolfo has with of the highest caliber Marcello about Mimî’s illness, Colline’s gift of his beloved coat… The beauty of this opera and helping to make is that it all seems heartfelt, honest, real. This essential technology allows Brandeis researchers and science students the ability to observe brain activity in real time and will also help to keep Brandeis University at the forefront in research for neurodegenerative diseases. At our BNC Phoenix Fall Opening Event, we were fortunate to have as our guest speaker Joshua Trachtenberg. Dr. Trachtenberg graduated from Brandeis in 1990 and is a leader in studying the living brain in action by using advanced imaging technology. After establishing his research laboratory at UCLA, he founded a company named Neurolabware. It was their two-photon microscope that was purchased for use at Brandeis University. AKINA Don Carlo is often considered Verdi’s most Wagnerian work. It makes use of the evolving structure of the Musiktheater, made so popular by Wagner, and introduces several motives that can be seen almost as Wagnerian leitmotifs. Verdi creates an entire political world set in Spain during the reign of Philip II. The opera follows four members of the Habsburg family: Philip II, King of all the world, son of an Emperor and ruler of a kingdom that “the sun never sets upon." Musical icon Beebe Freitas dead at 79 One of Hawaii’s beloved musical icons, Beebe Freitas, a gifted accompanist, pianist, organist, vocal coach and educator, died Saturday at the age of 79. Working with thousands of performers privately and on stage for more than five decades, she is best known in the islands for rehearsing and coaching soloists and choruses as the head of music for Hawaii Opera Theatre and for being the lead organist for more than 40 years at both First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu and Punahou School. Freitas died at her East Oahu home Saturday, Feb. 17, with her daughter Roslyn Freitas Catracchia at her side, along with longtime family friend Dr. Don Fancher and her caregivers. Freitas was hospitalized on and off over the last year and a half with various medical conditions, including congestive heart failure and diverticulitis. In spite of being near death in the hospital several times last year, she returned to Punahou School and First Presbyterian Church to continue playing the piano for worship services from July until mid-December. During one hospitalization, she told her doctor “You have to have me out by Sunday,” so she could return to church to play, which she did. “When John and I were kids, it was just ‘normal’ for us to have our mom walk across the street to Aina Haina Elementary School to play for our Christmas pageants, May Day programs and other events,” said Catracchia, the director of worship and performing arts at First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu, who is also a music director, vocal coach, composer and lyricist.

This is our 3rd season and in our short history this is the most ambitious season ever. Since the beginning, our artistic mission has been to present local and international artists who are acclaimed in chamber music, vocal and instrumental recitals, jazz and theater/opera, all at an affordable price. We also wanted to bring high-quality music programming and performing arts to the Sunset district of San Francisco. We are proud of the relationships we have forged between us and the artists, as wells as between the artists and you, our audience, and of the many donors and partnerships that has helped make Sunset Music & Arts a cultural hub in the Sunset district and the San Francisco Bay area. Some of the highlights of the new season include performances by several returning artists as well as many new artists. We are especially proud to add a piano recital series and a choral series to our programming. Heading the piano series is pianist-composer Eric Tran and pianist Robyn Carmichael. Our choral series features the Monaco Boys Choir, Masterworks Serenade (director Dr. Bryan Baker), and the San Francisco Renaissance Voices (director Katherine McKee). We are also proud to announce a 3-part ‘East meets West’ series that feature musicians who uniquely meld music from Western and Eastern classical traditions to produce unique new compositions. Artists include violinist Lucian Balmer, sitarist Joanna Mack, tabla percussionist Josh Mellinger, bansuri master Deepak Ram, and Carnatic vocalist Gautam Ganeshan.
