Così fan tutte Cast Biography (Cahir, Ireland) Jennifer Davis is an alumna of the Jette Parker Young Artist Programme and has appeared at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden as Adina in L’Elisir d’Amore; Erste Dame in Die Zauberflöte; Ifigenia in Oreste; Arbate in Mitridate, re di Ponto; and Ines in Il Trovatore, among other roles. Following her sensational 2018 role debut as Elsa von Brabant in a new production of Lohengrin conducted by Andris Nelsons at the Royal Opera House, Davis has been propelled to international attention, winning praise for her gleaming, silvery tone, and dramatic characterisation of remarkable immediacy. (Sacramento, California) American Mezzo-soprano Irene Roberts continues to enjoy international acclaim as a singer of exceptional versatility and vocal suppleness. Following her “stunning and dramatically compelling” (SF Classical Voice) performances as Carmen at the San Francisco Opera in June, Roberts begins the 2016/2017 season in San Francisco as Bao Chai in the world premiere of Bright Sheng’s Dream of the Red Chamber. Currently in her second season with the Deutsche Oper Berlin, her upcoming assignments include four role debuts, beginning in November with her debut as Urbain in David Alden’s new production of Les Huguenots led by Michele Mariotti. She performs in her first Ring cycle in 2017 singing Waltraute in Die Walküre and the Second Norn in Götterdämmerung under the baton of Music Director Donald Runnicles, who also conducts her role debut as Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel. Additional roles for Roberts this season include Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Fenena in Nabucco, Siebel in Faust, and the title role of Carmen at Deutsche Oper Berlin. -

We are excited to be working with Daniel Kramer and his team at English National Opera to present this new production of The Turn of the Screw. Some of our Open Air Theatre audience may be experiencing opera for the first time – and we hope that you will continue that journey of discovery with English National Opera in the future; opera audiences intrigued to see this work here, may in turn discover the unique possibilities of theatre outdoors. Our season continues with Shakespeare’s As You Like It directed by Max Webster and, later this summer, Maria Aberg directs the mean, green monster musical, Little Shop of Horrors. Completions and Reconstructions of Musical Works Part 4: Russian School by Stephen Barber Borodin left his opera Prince Igor unfinished and it was completed from sketches and memory by Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov. A scene by scene account of their contributions is available here. (Rimsky-Korsakov’s role in making performing editions of the work of his compatriots cannot be overestimated, though he freely recomposed and rearranged in a way even the boldest of modern scholars would hesitate to do.) This is the standard version, with recordings by Oskar Danon (Eloquence) and Mark Ermler (Melodiya) among others. Some other recordings omit the third act, which is mostly by Glazunov. Valery Gergiev recorded a new reconstruction (Philips). This is based on a fresh examination of all the sources; it takes into account an unpublished vocal score by Pavel Lamm, which reverses the order of the first two acts and has some other changes, and it also has additional material by Yuri Faliek. Another new edition, by Dmitri Tcherniakov and the conductor Gianandrea Noseda, was mounted and recorded by the Metropolitan opera (DG DVD). Borodin also did not complete his third symphony, or rather, he did not write it all down. Two movements were reconstructed by Glazunov, partly from memory. There are numerous recordings, including Loris Tjeknavorian (RCA) and Neeme Järvi (DG). Mussorgsky worked on many operatic projects but completed few of them. He left two versions of Boris Godunov: the 1869 original and his revision of 1872, with extra scenes but also cuts. In practice, most productions are conflated, drawing on both versions, making cuts, moving scenes and otherwise reorganizing the work.
