'^"'^^«^.;^c_x rOFWORLD •WKR II itliiro>iiiiii|r«trMit^i^'it-ri>i«fiinit(i*<j|yM«.<'i|*.*>' mk a ^. N. WESTWOOD nCHTING C1TTDC or WORLD World War II was the last of the great naval wars, the culmination of a century of warship development in which steam, steel and finally aviation had been adapted for naval use. The battles, both big and small, of this war are well known, and the names of some of the ships which fought them are still familiar, names like Bismarck, Warspite and Enterprise. This book presents these celebrated fighting ships, detailing both their war- time careers and their design features. In addition it describes the evolution between the wars of the various ship types : how their designers sought to make compromises to satisfy the require - ments of fighting qualities, sea -going capability, expense, and those of the different naval treaties. Thanks to the research of devoted ship enthusiasts, to the opening of government archives, and the publication of certain memoirs, it is now possible to evaluate World War II warships more perceptively and more accurately than in the first postwar decades. The reader will find, for example, how ships in wartime con- ditions did or did not justify the expecta- tions of their designers, admiralties and taxpayers (though their crews usually had a shrewd idea right from the start of the good and bad qualities of their ships). With its tables and chronology, this book also serves as both a summary of the war at sea and a record of almost all the major vessels involved in it.

  • A Discussion Guide to Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER WINNER of the CARNEGIE MEDAL A Discussion & Research Guide RUTA SEPETYS TO SALTTHE SEA Those who are gone are not necessarily lost. Author’s Note This book is a work of historical fi ction. The Wilhelm Gustloff, the Amber Room, and Operation Hannibal, however, are very real. The sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff is the deadliest disaster in maritime history, with losses dwarfi ng the death tolls of the famous ships Titanic and Lusitania. Yet remarkably, most people have never heard of it. On January 30, 1945, four torpedoes waited in the belly of Soviet submarine S-13. Each torpedo was painted with a scrawled dedication: For the Motherland. For the Soviet People. For Lenin- grad. For Stalin. Three of the four torpedoes were launched, destroying the Wilhelm Gustloff and killing estimates of more than nine thousand people. The majority of the passengers on the Gustloff were civilians, with an estimated fi ve thousand being children. The ghost ship, as it is sometimes called, now lies off the coast of Poland, the large gothic letters of her name still visible underwater. Over two million people were successfully evacuated during Operation Hannibal, the largest sea evacuation in modern history. Hannibal quickly transported not only soldiers but also civilians to safety from the advancing Russian troops. Lithuanians, Latvians, Estonians, ethnic Germans, and residents of the East Prussian and Polish corridors all fl ed toward the sea. My father’s cousins were among them. My father, like Joana’s mother, waited in refugee camps hoping to return to Lithuania.

  • Military History Anniversaries 16 Thru 31 January
Military History Anniversaries 16 thru 31 January Events in History over the next 15 day period that had U.S. military involvement or impacted in some way on U.S military operations or American interests JAN 16 1776 – Amrican Revolutionary War: African-American Soldiers » It was an uncomfortable fact for many in the colonies that at the same time they were fighting the British for their liberty and freedom they were depriving slaves of that same opportunity. African-American soldiers, in fact, had participated in major Revolutionary War battles from its very start: around 5% of American forces at the battle of Bunker Hill were black. New England units were completely integrated with soldiers receiving the same pay regardless of color. Still, fears of a rebellion of armed slaves tempered official American recognition of the contribution of blacks. On this date General George Washington allowed for the first time for free blacks with military experience to enlist in the revolutionary army. A year later, as the American need for manpower increased, Washington dropped the military experience requirement, allowing any free black who so wishes to enlist. The Continental Congress tried to recruit more African-Americans by offering to purchase them from the Southern slaveholders. Unsurprisingly, few agreed. But enterprising states like Rhode Island made an end run around the slaveholders, announcing any slave who enlisted would immediately be freed. (Rhode Island compensated the slaveholder for the market value of their slave.) The “1st Rhode Island Regiment” was comprised mostly of those freed slaves, becoming the only Continental Army unit to have segregated units for blacks.

1914 - 1919 John Herbert Brewer Driver, Army Service Corps, T3/026089 Base Horse Transport, died 2nd June 1917. Parents lived in the Market Place and before the war John worked on a farm in Settrington. Remembered on Chatby Memorial in Alexandria. The memorial stands at the eastern end of the cemetery and commemorates almost one thousand service men who died in WW1 & have no grave. Many of them lost when hospital ships or transports were sunk in the Mediterranean. John was on board the SS Cameronian under the command of Capt R Roberts on passage from Suda Bay in Crete to Alexandria carrying a large number of mules with a few soldiers to look after them. In the early morning of 2nd June 1917 the ship was torpedoed by U-boat UC34 commanded by Robert Sprenger when 50 miles NW by N one quarter N of Alexandria. Unfortunately a number of men were asleep in hammocks on the lower deck when the explosion flooded this deck and all were drowned, the ship sinking in 5 minutes. Those lost included Capt Roberts, two army officers and 30 other ranks together with one officer and nine of the crew. The SS Cameronian of 5,861 tons was built in 1914 for the Hamburg-Amerika Line as the SS Kamerun to supply the German West Africa colony Kamerun, now the Republic of Cameroon. It was found abandoned on the River Kamerun by the Royal Navy and returned to the UK to be operated by the Liverpool based Leyland Line. Charles Burini Company Quartermaster Serjeant, 7510, “D” Coy 2nd Bn Yorkshire Regiment, died 20th March 1915 aged 23.

  • WGHS Summer Reading 2021-2022 Brochure
West Genesee High School’s Summer Reading Program 2021-2022 For over 20 years, the English Department has sponsored a Summer Reading Program for students entering grades 9-12. The philosophy behind the program has always remained the same: to encourage students to read more by introducing them to contemporary novels that are pleasurable, yet worthwhile stories in the hope that they will become lifelong readers. Each child is required to read one title from the list for the upcoming grade level. A committee of parents, students, and teachers has selected the list for each grade level. Effort has been made to address relevant issues in a responsible and thoughtful manner. Consideration has also been given to include books that offer a range of reading levels. It is our hope that this program will be a shared experience between students and parents. Therefore, it is highly recommended that parents assist their child in the selection of a book that is appropriate for him/her. Parents are encouraged to visit the West Genesee High School Library website for the lists, information about locating books, and access to book reviews. The individual classroom English teacher will assign a project based on the books when the students return to class in September. We advise that students take notes or keep a journal as they read so they can better recall information which will be reviewed and assessed in their respective English classes when they return to school in September. Students enrolled in Advanced Placement English will complete the readings assigned by those teachers in lieu of one of the novels from this list.
