JEFFERSON COUNTY DRAFT HORSE ASS0CIATION By Jackie Schuster-JCDHA Secretary

The leaves are changing color making for picturesque settings at Old World Wisconsin. September found our teamsters doing fall plowing in the German village. Many visitors came around asking questions on the different breeds of horses and what we were using as implements. The visitors saw Dick Berner plowing with a team of Belgians, Erik Johnson and Tim Wroblewski plowing and dragging with four abreast or three abreast Percherons, Dave Kemna with a team of Fjords and Ron Luebke with a team of Percherons plowing. The weather held out till the afternoon when we experienced a little drizzle. But the turnout for visitors was good. The Omnibus was being pulled by the team of Percherons from Old World Wisconsin on Saturday and on Sunday by Steve Haase’s team of Clydesdales. The bus was always full on Sunday. All of this is made possible by the grant the association receives from the Wisconsin Horse Council. Thank you to the Wisconsin Horse Council for the grants we have received in the past. This grant helps us educate and demonstrate how horses were used in agriculture.

NAWD Virtual Show raises breast cancer funds

‘Pretty in Pink’! Equestrians across the country, including Wisconsin, practiced their Western Dressage skills and contributed to the Madison WI Breast Cancer Recovery Center at the same time by participating in an 8 day Virtual Horse Show. North American Western Dressage (NAWD) is dedicated to promoting practical application of the Classical Training Scale and it all starts on the ground! From October 1st – 8th, Youth, Adult Amateur and Open handlers used the new NAWD Six Feet on the Ground groundwork tests and found that the holes in their ground- work seem to correspond directly to holes in their riding. NAWD Virtual Shows offers riders a fun and easy way to obtain feedback from the comfort of their own barn or at a friendly host barn. Videos are uploaded and sent to judges. Scorecards are shared privately with riders. Special thanks to Let’s Dance Dressage, Select Saddlery, Michael Guerini of Dun Movin’ Ranch and Dale/Kris Blacklock for the support of this program.

Awards to Youth - 1st Elizabeth & Flurry (Test 2), 2nd Ivy & Malachi (Test 1), 3rd Emily & Penny (Test 1); Adult Amateur – 1st Kris & Good Knight Beautiful (Freestyle), 2nd Susan & Gabe (Test 5), 3rd Kris & Good Knight Beautiful (Test 2); Open – 1st Gina & Tango (Test 3), 2nd Gina & Tango (Test 6)

Six Feet on the Ground - NAWD created a new incremented groundwork training program that emphasizes the principles in the training scale (rhythm, relaxation, suppleness, connection, impul- sion, straightness and collection) to provide a working model applicable to every discipline for success and before we get in the saddle. Use the tests for training….then compete to hone your skills! The horse/handler is judged individually as they complete tests that become increasingly diffi- cult as the team gain skills. The first four ‘Six Feet on the Ground’ exercis- es/tests are performed in halter and lead rope. 5th features cones and poles to add precision and 6th and 7th may be performed in snaffle or hackamore in preparation for transitioning cues to the saddle. Visit the NAWD website for ‘Six Feet on the Ground’ guidelines and tests http://www.northamericanwesterndressage.org/

NAWD rewards horsemanship within their TRAX Achievement Program – NAWD recognizes and rewards Youth, Adult Amateur, Open and Seniors with achievement awards as individuals or as a team in several divisions -- Western Dressage, NAWD and/or Cowboy Dressage™. Whether you’re competing in local open shows, schooling shows, district, regional or national shows, or NAWD virtual shows, TRAX Achieve- ment is designed to recognize individual riders and teams improving their horsemanship skills and applying dressage training into their everyday routine and riding. After enrolling in TRAX, simply submit your Western Dressage, Cowboy Dressage or NAWD Dressage scorecards to NAWD’s TRAX Achievement Program. Lazy Creek Farm Remembers Western Dressage Clinics As I write this article, I have many fond memories of all of the people that I have seen excel in the Western Dressage field. Lazy Creek Farm started holding Western Dressage clinics in 2009, in hopes of teaching riders how to communicate with their horses more effectively. Our first clinic was full of some wonderful people. There are several riders that come to mind that have really excelled in this training. One woman called me in the beginning, and asked if this training was good for older folks, and could she bring her gaited horse. I had no idea that this woman would not only excel, but become a promoter of Western Dressage by going to other states in order to learn all of the new and exciting ways in which to teach this up-and-coming training. When Gary and I started the clinics with Lynne Levy, I had a great feeling that Western Dressage was going to become a new class in shows and a popular new way to teach the horse and rider. Western Dressage has no prejudice against breed, color, gait or discipline. It is a perfect way to train all Joan Beyer on Braveheart horses and people. The main focus is teaching soft communication between the horse and rider. We would like to thank all of the people who have stuck with our clinics in order to learn and excel in Western Dressage. We have all gone further than any of us could have ever expected! We would like to say thank you to Lynne Levy for all of her wonderful training. We extend a thank you to Kris Blacklock, for her eagerness to learn and to share her learning with others. We thank Brenda Link, who provided us with the privilege of watching her grow with her horse. And last, but not least, we would like to thank Joan Beyer for going as far with her dream as possible and for sharing that dream with her friends and fellow riders. These are just a few of the riders that we have watched follow their dreams and excel. In closing, we would like to say “Congratulations!” to all of our friends, both old and new, who we have watched go forward in this learning and teaching process!

Thank you! Brenda Link on Nevada Gary & Claudia Shipshock, Lazy Creek Farm

Why should I belong to WHC? This is the only organization that is here for the horse and the people who own them or simply love them. We are not a breed organization, a saddle club, or a riding discipline. We exist solely for the welfare of the horse and the betterment of our industry as a whole. Membership in WHC connects you with other horse people who share your concerns and brings you to a broader view of the equine industry. The strength of our voice is in direct proportion to the size of membership. How many members we have is what always matters to officials. Often, people belong to organizations in relation to their profession; you should belong to this organization in relation to your passion. WHC represents the horse people of Wisconsin, and the horse people of Wisconsin need to support their state organization through membership. Page 10 Wisconsin Horse Council

Kentucky Horse Park Mourns Loss of Incomparable, Invincible, ‘Unbeatable’ Horse LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 8, 2014) – champion Cigar died last evening, Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital from complications following surgery for severe osteoarthritis in his neck. Foaled April 18, 1990, the Hall of Fame horse and longtime visitor favorite at the Kentucky Horse Park’s Hall of Champions was 24. At retirement, Cigar’s career had a total of 19 wins out of 33 starts with earnings of $9,999,815, which was a record at that time. He was voted Champion Older Male and Horse of the Year in both 1995 and in 1996. “The great champion Cigar thrilled racing fans and surely brought new ones to the sport as he compiled win after win in his in- credible streak of victories,” said Governor Steve Beshear. “An example of racing at its best, he continued to serve as an ambas- sador, bringing joy to countless visitors to the Hall of Champions at the Kentucky Horse Park, where he will be missed.” The first horse to tie racing legend Citation’s record of 16 consecutive victories, Cigar had lived at the Kentucky Horse Park since his retirement in 1999. Cigar was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in August 2002, his first year of eligibility. “Cigar had been experiencing arthritis-related health issues over the past six months and was in outstanding physical and men- tal condition other than the osteoarthritis he was suffering from in several of his cervical vertebrae,” said Kathy Hopkins, direc- tor of equine operations for the Kentucky Horse Park. “Medical therapies had failed to relieve the pressure that the arthritis was causing on his spine, which had resulted in instability in his hind legs.” Cigar had been under the care of a team of veterinarians from the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute and the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, some of the best equine veterinarians in the world. The team of veterinarians and surgeons had deemed that spinal surgery was the only option to relieve the pressure and ensure the highest quality of life for the horse. “Cigar had been suffering from a cervical spine instability for which conservative medical therapies could no longer halt the dis- ease’s progressive nature,” said Dr. Rocky M. Mason, of the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute. “The decision to seek out a more lasting treatment modality was made. Surgery is never an easy decision in a 24-year-old horse, but Cigar had proven himself a regal, classy and determined patient making the decision to proceed an easier one.” Surgical correction was performed by a team led by Dr. Brett Woodie, of Rood and Riddle, Dr. Laura Werner, of Hagyard Equine, and Dr. Steve Reed, of Rood and Riddle who pioneered the special procedure performed. “The Kentucky Horse Park was committed to providing him with the highest level of care possible,” said Hopkins. “We are heart- broken to lose this great horse, especially as we were trying to do everything we could to improve his quality of life and make him more sound and comfortable. Our park family is immensely grateful to Dr. Reed and the outstanding medical teams at Rood and Riddle and Hagyard Equine for their ultimate dedication to and concern for this unmatched champion.” “Cigar developed a compression of his spinal cord in the lower part of his neck,” said Dr. Reed. “The most severe compression was between cervical vertebra 6 and 7, with additional compression between cervical vertebra 5 and 6. This was an acquired problem related to arthritis, and bony remodeling in the neck. The severity of this spinal cord compression became so problem- atic that all parties were left with few options, the best one being surgery. This was a significant surgery involving a prolonged recovery. Unfortunately, during recovery Cigar suffered a vertebral fracture and passed away.” Hopkins said Cigar will be remembered as one of the greatest horses the world has ever seen, and thanked fans who have sup- ported Cigar and the Kentucky Horse Park since his retirement. She also noted the efforts of park team members who have tak- en excellent care of him over the years, including Wes Lanter, Robin Bush and the late Cathy Roby. Dr. Reed continued, “The outcome was disappointing and very sad for many people; but especially for Wes and Kathy who re- mained at his side to the end.” Like the other Hall of Champions horses who died in retirement at the park, Cigar will be buried on the Memorial Walk of Cham- pions near Alysheba, Bold Forbes, Forego, John Henry and Kona Gold; Standardbreds Cam Fella and Rambling Willie; American Saddlebreds CH Imperator, CH Skywatch and CH Gypsy Supreme; and American Quarter Horse Sgt. Pepper Fea- ture. “Cigar was an incredible horse who left an everlasting mark on the racing world,” said Ted Nicholson, interim executive director of the Kentucky Horse Park. “We are honored that Cigar was able to spend so many years of his life here at the park where he was visited by so many fans and will always be remembered.” A public memorial service will be held for Cigar at a future date, yet to be determined. A banner has been placed by his grave at the Hall of Champions for guests and fans to sign. Wisconsin Horse Council November Page 11

Achieve Equine Perfec?on With Pat Parelli From a young age, Pat Parelli was obsessed with horses. When Pat was 13, a horseman named Freddie Ferrera recognized his natural talent with horses and took Pat under his wing, teaching him valuable lessons on how to be more natural with animals and nature. Pat coined the term Natural Horsemanship to describe his training approach. Since his first seminar on March 1, 1982, Pat has presented his philosophy of “love, language and leadership” to over one million people, including Anthony Robbins, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Tom Selleck, and the Queen of England! High Cliff Ridge Riders Sara Janssen, Treasurer Dear Members of District 3

Thank you for your financial support of the High Cliff Ridge Riders youth show which was held on Saturday, August 9, at the Sherwood arena. We had a smaller crowd of partici- pants than usual for such a beautiful day, but most of the youth were able to run in many of the classes, making for a busy and fun-filled day.

Some of the events in the show were barrels, poles, egg and spoon, ribbon race, as well as stick horse and the three legged race, which were available to even non-rider children. Many of these classes were broken down into senior, junior and tiny tot levels so that competitors were up against kids of similar age.

Burgers, brats and hot dogs were available along with other snacks and soda. A gam- bler’s elimination raffle also kept the excitement high.

Your donation provided beautiful metals with ribbons for the first through fifth place winners and trophies for high point. Our riders ranged in age from 3-18. They brought family and friends to cheer them on.

Our club strives to provide opportunities for youth to experience horses as well as promote good horsemanship and safe riding. Our youth show accomplishes these goals in an encouraging atmos- phere, bringing together horse enthusiasts from our community as well as from surrounding areas.

Thank you again for your support of High Cliff Ridge Rider’s youth show and your promotion of the equine industry.

Did you know!!!! We have a Certified Judge location map on our website under the Judges tab that lists all the judges names, addresses and phone numbers. If you are looking for a judge for next year’s show-look on the interactive map.

Wisconsin Cowboy Dressage The Wisconsin Cowboy Dressage Team For the last 3 years Wisconsin Cowboy Dressage (formerly know as Wisconsin Western Dressage Club) has been working very hard to bring the discipline of Cowboy DressageTM to Wisconsin for all to enjoy. We could write a novel listing all of the reasons to get involved with Cowboy Dressage but we would rather let our members do the talking for us. Lynne Madison from Redford, Michigan - “Had a great time at the Wisconsin Cowboy Dressage Mock Show. Such a friendly, encouraging group of horse enthusiasts! Wonderful format for learning new skills.” Cheryl Oelke from Allenton, WI - “I had a blast. Thank you all so much. Everyone was so friendly and supportive. I visited with several people that I have never met before. I learned a lot...., thank you for your positive feedback on my rides. Thank you all so much for a great day!! I will be participating again in the future.” Kathy Brost from Cedar Grove, WI - “I will say this, once again, a great gathering of really nice people. We had a great time bringing our minis to participate on the ground. A really good experience for them, and learning that making a circle is not always as easy as it looks!! ...What I love about CB Dressage is you can just be yourself and learn as you go. Look forward to eventually bringing Fantasia and giving the gaited part a try.” Char Mano from Racine, WI - “I attended the Clinic at CVEE this last weekend, and must tell all the other members how much I enjoyed my time with them, they are every single one a great credit to women working together to get stuff done!! When I met them, every single one acted glad to meet me. I got a couple of hug-hellos. One member was so excited about my ride she cried with me over it (in happiness). Everyone wanted to help each other and I can't recall an unkind word. The organization of the clinic was the best I have ever experienced. If you are NOT a member, you need to join to get involved in a group of wonderful people, ready to assist however they can. Thank you again for affirming my faith in horsemen/women in the world.” Susan Jansson from Barrington, Illinois - “Had such a great time this weekend. Fun meeting all of you, such great hosts!” Joy Hirth from Plymoth, WI - “I want to say THANK YOU for all the hard work, positive encouragement, thoughtful details, hugs, cake and for making your show one of the best days of my life! You are an incredible bunch...YeeHaw !!!” Lynn Maertz from Stoughton, WI - “Thank you to all of the officers and riders for making this event so awesome and success- ful! Every person in this club is so nice, friendly and helpful. I feel so honored to be a part of such a great group.” The WCD and its members are passionate about Cowboy DressageTM and improving our horsemanship.
