Pat Parelli

Pat Parelli never dreamed that his philosophies and teaching approach would one day have such an enormous impact on the horse industry. He began as a rider, was successful at it for fourteen years, and tried to find life after rodeo by training horses.

The answer lay in teaching people instead of training horses ‰‘‘†’”‘ˆ‡••‹‘–—”‡†‹–‘ƒ˜‡”›ˆ”—•–”ƒ–‹‰‘‡Ǥ ‡Šƒ†ƒŠƒ”†–‹‡™ƒ– Š‹‰–Š‡Š‘”•‡•Š‡ǯ† trained start slipping backwards when being handled and ridden by people who lacked the expertise to keep them making progress. Several of his customers talked him into giving riding lessons which at ˆ‹”•– Š‡ †‹†ǯ– –Š‹ Š‡ ™ƒ–‡† –‘ †‘ǡ ƒˆ–‡” ƒŽŽǡ Š‡ ™ƒ• ƒ Š‘”•‡ –”ƒ‹‡”Ǥ —– ’”‡––› •‘‘ ‹– „‡ ƒ‡ evident that this was where the answer lay, not in training horses, but in teaching people how to train their own.

So Pat began to develop a system built around much more than just words: he used concepts and tasks and allowed the details to come later. He found that if he could think of imaginative challenges, people would progressively develop the feel, timing and balance it took to be able to do them.

Program ‡ƒ•›‰—‹†‡–‘Dz–Š‡”‘‰”ƒdz

This is a recipe for results.

A systematic plan of development for both horse and rider.

The system is based on communication, understanding and psychology vs. force, fear and intimidation.

The Program teaches the student to teach their own horse. It is designed to take a student from their first interaction with a horse through to true horsemanship as well as to broaden the savvy of experienced horse people into four areas: On Line, Liberty, FreeStyle and Finesse.

Your responsibilities with the Program

The PARELLI Licensed Professional is required to:

‡ ‘ǯ–‰‘–Š‡‡š–”ƒ‹Ž‡ˆ‘”•‘‡‘‡‰‘‹‰–Š‡‘–Š‡”™ƒ›Ǩ

‡ Teach them at their level not yours

‡ Feed them with a spoon not a shovel

‡ Teach by tasks (Details in the classroom/simulations and tasks when with the horses)

‡ Have a Plan.

‡ Teach by Savvy.

‡ Simplify the learning approach Ȃ Keep it Simple.

‡ Teach the student rather than train the horse.

‡ Develop good horse-man-ship habits.

‡ Put Foundation before Fancy (Specialization).

‡ Log and validate Parelli Professional activities

Be careful.... your task is to become so good at explaining and coaching that you very rarely have to put your hands on the horse. The less you feel the need to take over the horse, the better your teaching abilities are becoming.

This is about teaching people rather than training their horses. This is a very important thing to grasp.

Can you allow the student to be imperfect at first? Can you encourage them where they are at now? Can you allow the student to get frustrated and emotional... and help them become better horsemen for it? Can you help them solve the problem at their level, to slow down, to use the 7 Games, to go back to the Friendly Game?

Can you use positive motivation, to look for the good and encourage it? When you motivate success, problems go away.

Above all, teach through tasks. The more hung up you get on details..... hand positions, feet positions, exactly this and ‡šƒ –Ž›–Šƒ–ǤǤǤǤ–Š‡‘”‡›‘—™‹ŽŽˆ‹†›‘—”•‡Žˆ—•‹‰‡‰ƒ–‹˜‡™‘”†•ǣ‘ǤǤǤǤ‘–Ž‹‡–Šƒ–ǤǤǤǤ†‘ǯ–ǤǤǤǤǤ‘ǤǤǤǤ‘ǤǤǤǤǤo! Concepts & Tasks

Details confuse... concepts teach!

The more you get into detail, the more you will confuse your student and the more stressed they will become. Details will come later. Your student will learn more by doing, ‡˜‡‹ˆ‹–ǯ•‹’‡”ˆ‡ –ƒ– first (Details in the classroom/simulations and tasks when with the horses).

Pat Parelli has proven it. Setting tasks helps your student to learn more quickly and more experientially. It gives them a sense of achievement and also keeps them realistic. PARELLI has an incredible safety record. The reason for this is prior and proper preparation of both student and horse. When the self assessment tasks in a level are consistently checked off then it is time for an official evaluation through the audition process. This provides the student with a measurable achievement and proof of truly attaining a higher level of horse- man-ship.

By teaching through tasks and concepts, learning is greatly enhanced and underlying problems are exposed so they can „‡†‡ƒŽ–™‹–ŠǤ –ƒ‡•–Š‡Dz—–‡ƒ Šƒ„Ž‡dz–‡ƒ Šƒ„Ž‡ǣƒ––‹–—†‡ǡˆ‡‡Žǡ–‹‹‰ǡ„ƒŽƒ ‡ǡ•ƒ˜˜›Ƭ‡š’‡”‹‡ ‡ǤŠ‡•–—†‡– learns these, not through instruction, but through the tasks a savvy teacher sets for them.

Instead of a lot of words that will wash over your student, learn to ask probing questions and only give information when you have permission to do so. This is the best way to establish trust, respect, confidence and leadership with your customer.

A Ask a Question: Have you done anything like this before? (PARELLI)

I Identify a problem.... or goal Find out about it: What is the goal? How bad does it get, how long, Šƒ–ǯ•’”‡˜‡–‹‰›‘—ˆ”‘‰‡––‹‰–Š‡”‡ǫ how often, exactly when, †‡• ”‹„‡–Š‡™‘”•–‹–ǯ•„‡‡

Why does this happen? Think of all the reasons. Identify opposition reflex & relate it to the particular problem (Keep it brief and to the point)

D What kind of result would you like? Imagine the best it could be... describe it. (Help them realize just how good it can get)

Two ways to get there: A Regular: home study program Accelerated: add coaching at strategic times Super accelerated: go to the Pat Parelli for extreme desire

Make the commitment to achieve this together.

23

How can you take them there ‹ˆ–Š‡›†‘ǯ–‘™™Š‡”‡ they want to go?

Unless you know what your customer wants ›‘— ƒǯ–‰‹˜‡–Š‡™Šƒ––Š‡›™ƒ–ǤǤǤǤ no matter how hard you try they will end up dissatisfied!

Many people will come to you with a particular problem, or a broader aim like just wanting to ride better. It will be important for you to listen to them and understand how to help them achieve their goals following the lessons outlined in the home study program.

Since we at Parelli became clear that our goal was to teach people to make the world a better place for horses and humans..... things have changed dramatically.... our customers enroll in the Program, they buy the education and the necessary equipment... and they get results like never before because they are COMMITTED to the goal.

Help your to identify their goal

What is your role?

Teacher, mentor, inspirator, motivator, adviser, fan, believer, expert, supporter....

You are a Director more than anything.

You find out what your customer wants, and then you show them how to get it.

You direct them to the information and the tools that are required to get the result.

You believe in them and support them all the way.

Learn to ask the right questions at the right time.

Most problems occur because you are giving advice and answers ™‹–Š‘—–›‘—” —•–‘‡”ǯ•’‡”‹••‹‘Ǥ

Believe it or not, what you ask and when you ask it are critical to getting positive and progressive answers from your customer!

A Natural Flow

There is a way to naturally lead people into identifying their goal.

There is a natural flow to observe called the AIDA Principle:

Attention... Interest... Desire.... Action.

Here is a 7 Point Plan for you to learn to follow:

1. ASK QUESTIONS THAT DIRECT FOCUS (Have you ever done this before, is it your horse, etc.)

ATTENTION: 2. IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM OR GOAL AND WHATS PREVENTING IT (narrow it down to something specific)

3. FOCUS ON IT (explore the when, where, how bad, etc.)

INTEREST: 4. GET TO THE CAUSE - OPPOSITION REFLEX (relate it specifically to the problem or goal)

DESIRE: 5. PAINT A PICTURE OF HOW GOOD IT COULD BE

ACTION: 6. GET COMMITMENT TO GETTING THIS RESULT

7. FORMULATE THE PROGRAM (the long way / the short way)

There are no one-shot wonders or effective short cuts.

26

Most difficulties occur when you have not used AIDA right in the beginning and now things are awkward... when do you bring it up, and how do you bring it up without your enthusiasm being misread as being pushy.

As with horses, do it right the first time. You have to commit to becoming a skilled ‘—‹ ƒ–‘”ǡ‹–ǯ•›‘—”Œ‘„ƒ•ƒ‹•–”— –‘”Ǥ–—†›ƒ†—•‡ Ǥ ‡–‰‘‘†ƒ–‹–ǨǨ

But remember, this is not what teaching is all about. It is our job as an instructor, to help the student learn how to get the result at the pace that is safe and possible for them. The only time to intervene is when: Ȉ There is a dangerous situation happening or about to happen. ȈThe student is totally confused - in which case try to do it with them. Use –Š‡Dz‹ƒ‡•‡™‹dz‡–Š‘†™Š‡”‡›‘—Ž‹ƒ”•ƒ†–Š‡›Šƒ˜‡–Š‡Ž‡ƒ†”‘’‡ and you have the Carrot Stick, or vice versa. By doing it together the student still has to participate, get the feel and be part of the result.

Best of all... simulate. Rather than take over the horse, use a better teaching method... simulation. You be the horse! Do all the resistant things their horse is doing and help them to be effective with you in this role before they try it with the horse again. This will usually solve the problem very well. They can work on their technique and timing without getting distracted by the horse or having to deal with any fear in the process.

Is it a good idea to lend my equipment? Maybe yes and maybe no! Some instructors have had a great deal of success with this. They ask the student to use this halter, lead and Carrot Stick during the lesson because it improves feel, timing and balance. Then they give a little more education on why (type of rope, type of halter, hinges, etc.). They take it back at the end of the lesson and are prepared to lend it again the next time. Often what happens is the student as•‹ˆ–Š‡› ƒ„—›‹–ǡ‹ˆ‘–ƒ––Š‡‡†‘ˆ–Š‡ˆ‹”•–Ž‡••‘ǡ‹–ǯ•ƒ––Š‡„‡‰‹‹‰‘ˆ–Š‡ 40

Maybe adopting something in the middle of these two will be the best... allow them to struggle a little and then put your halter and line on.

Developing your best students When you see someone with ability, with focus and determination, make it your focus to help propel this student as far forward as fast as you can.

Examples would be: ‡ give them extra attention, even some special sessions. ‡ take them to clinics as your guest, to watch and to be with you so they can ask questions and you can give them that little bit more. ‡ encourage them to accomplish their levels as soon as they are ready, and make sure you tell them exactly when they are ready. ‡ encourage them to invest time at the Pat Parelli Center. ‡ tell them the potential they have as... an instructor / trainer / competitor / ‘Ž–•–ƒ”–‡”Ǥ‡––Š‡‘™™Šƒ–ǯ•ƒ˜ƒ‹Žƒ„Ž‡ƒ†™Šƒ–›‘—„‡Ž‹‡˜‡–Š‡›Šƒ˜‡ the talent for. If you help them identify their goal it will be easier for them to be focused and motivated to achieve it. ‡ invite them to watch lessons you do. ‡ encourage them to assist you in your work.

All these things will help people accelerate toward their goal... with you as their closest mentor.

Have the right blend of patience and impatience for your students. Š‹•‡ƒ•ǡƒ ‡’––Š‡ˆ‘”™Š‡”‡–Š‡›ƒ”‡ƒ–ȋ–Š‡”‡ǯ•‘’‘‹–‰‡––‹‰ˆ”—•–”ƒ–‡†„› ’‡‘’Ž‡ǯ• Žƒ ‘ˆ •ƒ˜˜›ǤǤǤ –Š‹• ‹• ™Š› ›‘— ƒ”‡ Š‡Ž’‹‰ –Š‡ǨȌǤǤ. but at the same time encourage them to always move forward.

Make sure your name and phone number are clearly displayed, and your affiliation with PARELLI is noted by a logo or being stated in your title. Ȉ Working closely with Parelli Ambassadors x Participate in Activity Groups x Participate in community events Events such as parades, fairs, etc.

Ȉ ƒ˜‡‘’‡†ƒ›•‘ ‡‘”–™‹ ‡ƒ›‡ƒ” Hold these at your place or at a local venue that is well known. Give a talk, show off your students, allow people to talk to you and your students. Have information freely available.

Ȉ ‘Ž†ˆ”‡‡‡˜ƒŽ—ƒ–‹‘• Some people want to see what they are going to get, or at least get a taste of it. You can accomplish this through open days and also by having free evaluations or consultations with riders and horses. It needs only to be a half hour during which you can give them a short lesson that will yield great results: the first 3 Games for example.

Ȉ —ƒ›•ƬParelli Games Hold regular Fun Days or Parelli Games. Invite the public, publicize them in events calendars, articles and adds. You can also put posters around town. Not only will these attract new students, they will give your existing students fun things to do with what they are learning.

Ȉ ”‡‡‹†•‘”•Š‘’• Here is a great way to give to the community and start youngsters on their way to a natural relationship with horses. Make it a few hours just in the morning. Have lots of games with balls and frisbees and simulations as well as activities with horses based around the 7 Games. Encourage parents to be a part of it. Free hot dogs would be great if you could do it! Make sure these are well publicized and reported in the local papers.

Horse (advice) Selection

There is a formula to go through to help your customer to make a wise decision on buying a horse. Many people buy the •ƒ‡‹†‘ˆŠ‘”•‡‘˜‡”ƒ†‘˜‡”ǡƒ†‹–ǯ•‘ˆ–‡–Š‡™”‘‰ Š‘‹ ‡ˆ‘”–Š‡ǡˆ‘”ƒ—„‡”‘ˆ”‡ƒ•‘•ǣ’‡”•‘ƒŽ‹–›ǡ‡‡”‰› levels, goals, etc.

Beware. Check the horse out very well. Schedule a vet check. Most people do this first, when actually the horse may not pass any of the other tests. Save their money and have the horse vet checked once you are convinced the horse is the right one.

If you were to get another horse now, knowing what you know, what would be important? MIND - how calm, how interested, how friendly, how curious? What Horsenality? BODY - how athletic, how coordinated? SPIRIT - how spirited - low, medium or high? IMPULSION - an 8, a 2.... or a 5? The 7 Games are a great diagnostic system here. Use them well

Most complaints arise for the following reasons: Ȉ‘–‰‹˜‹‰™Šƒ–›‘—’”‘‹•‡† Ȉ ƒ—•‹‰–Š‡ —•–‘‡”–‘ˆ‡‡Ž‹˜ƒŽ‹†ƒ–‡†ǡ™”‘‰ǡ ”‹–icized Ȉ–Š‡›ˆ‡‡Ž—‹’‘”–ƒ– ȈŽƒ ‘ˆˆ‘ŽŽ‘™—’ Ȉ„‡‹‰–‘‘Šƒ”†‘–Š‡‹”Š‘”•‡ȋ™Š‹ Š‹•™Š››‘—•Š‘—Ž†ƒ˜‘‹†–aking over the horse) Ȉ‘–•–ƒ†‹‰„‡Š‹†™Šƒ–›‘—•‡ŽŽȋ›‘—”Ž‡••‘•ǡ–Š‡‡“—‹’‡–ǡ‡– Ǥ) When you look at these closely, they have more to do with relationship issues than they do physical problems.

You need to... Treat your customer like a friend, but keep the professional boundary. Care about them if they have a complaint... at least they are telling you! This means they want to fix i–Ǥȋ ˆ–Š‡›†‘ǯ–ǡ they just complain to others). Recognize how difficult it can be to raise an unhappy issue. Try to make the customer feel safe and welcome to talk this over with you. „‘˜‡ƒŽŽǡ†‘ǯ–Œ—•–‹ˆ›ǨŠ‡™‘”•––Š‹‰›‘— ƒ†‘‹•ƒ‡‡š —•‡• or try to over-‡š’Žƒ‹‹–ƒ™ƒ›Ǥ –†‘‡•ǯ–ƒ––‡” why, it just matters that they feel this way. If not 100% satisfied provide a full refund. What to do... Apologize. The sooner the better! Ask what you can do to solve the problem, make sure they feel that you think they are important. Do whatever it takes to win back their trust. You might even have to ask them what this would take. Then make sure you do it.
