Oral History is a method of collecting historical information through recorded interviews between a narrator with firsthand knowledge of historically significant events and a well-informed interviewer, with the goal of preserving substantive additions to the historical record. The recording is transcribed, lightly edited for continuity and clarity, and reviewed by the interviewee. The corrected manuscript is bound with photographs and illustrative materials and placed in The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, and in other research collections for scholarly use. Oral History Center, The Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley iii Howardena Pindell, c. 2017 Oral History Center, The Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley iv Abstract Howardena Pindell is a painter and mixed media artist, as well as a professor at State University of New York at Stony Brook. She earned a BFA from Boston University in 1965 and an MFA from Yale University in 1967. Pindell worked at the Museum of Modern Art from 1967 to 1979, where she held several positions, including exhibit assistant, curatorial assistant, and associate curator. She cofounded the A.I.R. Gallery in 1972. Pindell has taught in the Department of Art at State University of New York at Stony Brook since 1979. In this interview, Pindell discusses: her early life and education; facing discrimination; attending Boston University and Yale University, including professors, colleagues, and curriculum; working and traveling internationally, and facing racism and sexism; working at the Museum of Modern Art, including efforts to unionize and racism in the art world; cofounding A.I.R. SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Dance etc) FOUR WEEKS in advance prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and that we are able to locate sheet music. In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is need- ed, this gives us the time needed to properly prepare the music and learn the material. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. Recently, we’ve noticed in increase in cli- ents customizing what the band plays and doesn’t play with very specific detail. If you de- sire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we ask for a minimum of 100 requests. We want you to keep in mind that the band is quite good at reading the room and choosing songs that best connect with your guests. The more specific/selective you are, know that there is greater chance of losing certain song medleys, mashups, or newly released material the band has.

    BETYE SAAR – ART ICON AWARD WACO THEATER CENTER, WEARABLE ART GALA - 2019 On Saturday, June 1, 2019, artist Betye Saar will receive the Art Icon Award at WACO Theater Center’s Wearable Art Gala in Los Angeles. As one of the artists who ushered in the development of Assemblage art, Betye Saar’s practice reflects on African American identity, spirituality and the connectedness between different cultures. Her symbolically rich body of work has evolved over time to succinctly reflect the environmental, cultural, political, racial, technological, economic, and historical context in which it exists. Saar was born Betye Irene Brown on July 30, 1926 to Jefferson Maze Brown and Beatrice Lillian Parson in Los Angeles, California. Both parents attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where they met. After her father's death in 1931, Saar and her mother, brother, and sister moved in with her paternal grandmother, Irene Hannah Maze in the Watts neighborhood in Los Angeles. As a child, Saar witnessed Simon Rhodia’s construction of the Watts Towers in Los Angeles, which introduced ideas of creating art from found objects to embody both the spiritual and the technological. This early influence, combined with her interest in metaphysics, magic, and the occult formed the basis of Saar’s early assemblage work. With assemblages such as the iconic The Liberation of Aunt Jemima (1972), Saar sought to reveal marginalized and hidden histories. Her work has examined social invisibility of black Americans in service jobs, colorism, and the ways objects can retain memories and histories of their owners. Saar’s work can be found in the permanent collections of more than 60 museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and LACMA, among others.

    Press Release Kehinde Wiley October 2016 LAMENTATION 20 October 2016 - 15 January 2017 Tuesday-Sunday 10am – 6pm INFORMATIONS www.petitpalais.paris.fr The Petit Palais is holding the first solo exhibition in France of work by Afro-American artist Kehinde Wiley. The exhibition features a previously unseen series of ten monumental works, in the form of stained glass windows and paintings, showcased at the heart of the museum’s permanent collections. Kehinde Wiley draws on the tradition of classical painting masters such as Titian, Van Dyck, Ingres and David to create portraits drenched in colour and abounding in adornment. The subjects are young black and mixed-race people, anonymous models encountered during ad- hoc street castings. The result is a collision where art history and popular culture come face to face. The artist eroticizes the invisible, those traditionally excluded from representations of power, endowing them with hero status. His work takes the vocabulary of power and prestige in a new direction, oscillating between politically-charged critique and an avowed fascination with the luxury and bombast of our society’s symbols. For the Petit Palais show, Kehinde Wiley continues to explore religious iconography, with references to Christ and, for the first time, the figure of the Virgin. Six stained glass windows will be installed on a hexagonal structure in the large format gallery. Introductions Introduction to the 1st Edition When I attended my first Go Congress three years ago I was astounded by the sheer number of silly Go songs everyone knew. At the next Congress, I wondered if all these musical treasures had ever been printed. Some research revealed that the late Bob High had put together three collections of Go songs, but the last of these appeared in 1990. Very few people had these song books, and some, like me, weren’t even aware that they existed. While new songs had been printed in the American Go Journal, there was clearly a need for a new collection of Go songs. Last year I decided to do whatever I could to bring the AGA Song Book up to date. I wanted to collect as many of the old songs as I could find, as well as the new songs that had been written since Bob High’s last song book. You are holding in your hands the book I was looking for two years ago.
