Abstract This dissertation analyses and critically evaluates an aspect of Karl Barth’s thought, the understanding of which is important to a broader understanding of Barth, his relationship to other (especially iconoclastic) thinkers, and his relevance for contemporary theology: his understanding and critique of idolatry and the idol. Chapter 2 argues that it was revelation which both drove Barth’s idolatry-critique and determined his concepts of idolatry and the idol. It analyses Bath’s idolatry-critique as it was levelled against natural theology, and offers an evaluation of the picture of Barth’s thought which emerges. Chapter 3 analyses Barth’s idolatry-critique in relation to the doctrine of God. Directives which, for Barth, had to be adhered to within the development of the doctrine of God for the avoidance of idolatry, are discussed. Finally, an evaluation and critique of Barth’s critique of idolatry within the doctrine of God, and of his own adherence to these directives, is offered. Chapter 4 analyses the relationship of Barth’s idolatry-critique to his discussion of religion. It is shown that Barth, in his mature thought, criticised both the essence of religion and certain theological uses of the concept of religion as idolatry. Barth’s critique of religion as idolatry is itself subjected to critique, and the question of what bearing his critique of religion as idolatry ought to have for Christian, theological engagement with adherents of other world religions is taken up. Chapter 5 summarises and discusses further some of the findings and implications of this study. It is suggested that Barth’s thoroughly christological critique of idolatry (which is not without its own problems), in that it stands in contrast to the less particularistic forms of idolatry-critique set forth by several other modern scholars, raises the question of whether an idolatry-critique like his own might be called for within contemporary theology.     Research Note James Luther Adams Bibliographies JARED A. FARLEY James Luther Adams (1901-1994) is widely considered the twentieth century’s leading Unitarian theologian. Serving as professor of theology and ethics at Meadville Lombard Theological School and the Federated Theological Faculty in Chicago, IL (1936-1957), and at Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, MA (1957-1968), Adams authored innumerable sermons, essays and book chapters. Among scholars, he is known for having translated the works of Paul Tillich and Ernst Troeltsch into English. Among students of ministry, he is recognized for his arguments concerning the religious efficacy of voluntary associations, derived from his experiences confronting Nazism in pre-World War II Germany. An intellectual with an uncanny ability to recall information and see connections across diverse subjects, Adams drew deeply from the well of theological, historical, and social concern that was his life. His writings preserve much of what he came to believe. The following two bibliographies came about as a helpful by- product of my research on James Luther Adams. These titles list and cross-reference the sermons, essays and addresses of JLA that have been reprinted in the various edited volumes of his writings, including the recently published Prophet to the Powerful (2008). On February 12, 1917, Pauline Adeline Durant, the widow of the founder of the College, died at her home in Wellesley. Mrs. Durant gave the heartiest co-operation to Mr. Durant's plan for founding the College, and throughout his life assisted him in every way. After his death in October, 1881, she accepted the care of the College as a sacred trust from her husband, and gave to it thought, time, and money. Mrs. Durant had been an invalid confined to her home for more than three years before her death, but until these later years no meeting of the Board of Trustees nor any college function was complete without her presence.

Across the globe, vigorous political expression of impassioned belief has emerged within contemporary political orders. Even when political theologies do not turn to physical violence, recent advocates have espoused taking control of the political order for religiously-motivated goals, using a vast arsenal of legal, cultural, and electoral means. This surge of political religion comes at a time when forces of urbanization, globalization, and advances in knowledge and technology have spread, forces that were supposed to quell religious piety and make faith increasingly benign, according to many academics and secular theorists. Religion has not become a domesticated sphere, separated from politics and other sectors of human society. Countering the so-called secularization thesis, God’s followers have not receded quietly and they increasingly assert their role in the political order. This persistence of political theologies poses many important issues: How do religions legitimate their political activity? How do religions, newly conscious of history, time, and material reality, shape their political activity? How do they grapple with modern demands of reason and the principles of liberal democracy in formulating their political agenda? How can liberal democratic political communities, shaped by enlightenment ideals, accommodate—or cabin—political theologies? As religious thinkers in the West grappled with the meaning of modernity and how religious belief and practice could properly, if at all, enter into the public sphere, they came to a new understanding of the limits of power politics and the role of religion in shaping the collective order.

This view of the self became a central characteristic of the liberal-modern worldview, and it quickly found its way into the religious liberalism that emerged in the wake of the Enlightenment. Yet today, this individualistic understanding of the self is increasingly untenable. Philosophers, social scientists, psychologists, linguists, and theologians now generally agree that our liberal understanding of ourselves as autonomous individuals is an illusion. We don't first exist as individuals who then form social groups. Instead, the group always comes first, and the individual is formed by and always exists in relation to a larger social context. We are social beings through and through. Yet despite widespread contemporary agreement that the human self is fundamentally intersubjective or social in nature, a strong and potentially destructive emphasis on individualism continues to dominate the self- understanding of many religious liberals, including those within the Unitarian Universalist tradition. I believe we religious liberals need to get over ourselves. We need a more suitable understanding of the self as social, and in this article, I want to suggest an approach toward constructing such a conception. I begin by tracing the philosophy of subjectivity that emerged in the Enlightenment and that became the basis for the liberal-modern understanding of the self. I also sketch the more recent developments that began to undermine this view (part I). I then describe the individualistic self-understanding I believe to be prominent and problematic among religious liberals today (part II).

The difficulty of understanding Bultmann' s hermeneutical method results from placing it in a Cartesian context, which seeks a clear and objective interpretation. Bultmann' s thought, however, resists such Cartesian contextualization. A post-structural context, which similarly rejects Cartesianism, is better suited as a context for understanding Bultmann' s thought It is imperative, however, that John l:l4a and the theological principle of justification by faith be shown as the core of his thought, rather than reducing his hermeneutical method to a philosophy.
