Swedish Open Championships in Table Tennis was played for the first time in 1954 in Stockholm. Since the start SOC has been played every or every other year except between 2007 and 2011. SOC has been played in several different cities all around Sweden, from Malmö in the south to Umeå up north. Stockholm is the city that has been the host of most SOC and the tournament in 2014 will be the 44th time that SOC is organized. SOC is a part of the International Table Tennis Federation World Tour series with tournaments all over the world where the players compete for points to qualify to the World Tour Grand Fi- nals. There are three different tiers at the World Tour – Super Series, Major Series and Chal- lenge Series. SOC is a Major Serie tournament but has historically always had world class play- ers. The tournament is played over five days, two days of qualification and three days of the main draw. SOC spelades första gången 1954 i Stock- holm. Sedan starten har SOC spelats varje eller vartannat år med undantag från 2007 till 2011 då det var ett längre uppehåll. SOC har avgjorts i en rad städer runt om i Sverige, från Malmö i sö- der till Umeå i norr. Flest tävlingar har dock gått i Stockholm och 2014 blir det 44:e gången som SOC arrangeras. SOC är en del av det internationella förbundets World Tour med ett antal tävlingar runt om i hela världen där spelarna samlar poäng för att ta sig till World Tour-slutspelet. Det finns tre nivåer inom World Tour – Super Series, Major Series och Challenge Series. SOC ligger i mellannivån, Major Series, men brukar ha ett väldigt starkt startfält med många världsstjärnor på plats. Årets upplaga är inget undantag eller vad sägs om 13 av de 20 bästa herrarna och 11 av de 20 bästa damerna på senaste världsrankingen på plats.
