ACROSS THE NET Melton Table Tennis August 2017 Edition 37 WINTER SEASON ENDS, CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS, POINTS DIFFERENCE, & GREAT ESCAPES In this edition we congratulate Leading Players, tell you why you should all attend the Club Championships, ponder over points differences, look at how table tennis helped to save lives, and much more. AN END TO THE WINTER SEASON We are already into the finals of the Winter season. I’m not making any predictions about the winners, but the Grand Finals on the 3rd of August should be a great night. The Leading Players for the Winter season have already been decided, and the winner in A Grade is Michael Louey, taking the honours over Chris Addis. Mitch Braini took out the B Grade award, with Graham Huggett just behind him, and Brian Guy dominated in C Grade. Congratulations to these deserving winners for a great season. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS The annual 3 weeks of Club Championships is upon us. This is always a fun time of the year and there are some great trophies on offer. Week 1 on the 10th of August is the Handicap Championship. Every player has a chance of winning this, regardless of your standing in the club. Each player is given a handicap ranking and matches are played up to 31 points. Some top players may start on 0 or even a negative points score, while the lower rated players may start on up to 25 points. It’s fun to watch the top players sweating in these games, as they can’t afford to make a mistake.

ACROSS THE NET Melton Table Tennis May 2020 Edition 56 NOT MUCH TO SAY, REALLY I spoke to a doctor last night, and she said that she was hopeful of the virus being eradicated very soon. Mind you, she’s a doctor of music, but it was nice to get some good news. In this edition, we look back over 6 years of previous editions and hope that there is a reason to write future editions. COVID-19 UPDATE Well, we are still in the grips of a lockdown. It’s tough on many of us, driving us crazy and leaving us with a feeling of hopelessness. It’s like umpiring a best-of-5 match between two defenders. You know it’s going to end sometime; you just don’t know if you can hang on until then. But hang tough, my friends. We will get through this. As you know, both of our venues are currently closed. We have had no word on when these are likely to re- open, so it’s just a waiting game. When we hear that the restrictions are going to be eased, your committee will need to meet to discuss how and when we can get back to playing. We’ll obviously keep you informed. The best you can do in the meantime is follow the medical advice given, look after each other, and stay safe. Until then, I thought I’d put together some of my favourite articles from the past 6 years of Across The Net, just to give you something to read while you wait for better times ahead.

HOW CHINESE NEW MEDIA CONSTRUCT ELITE FEMALE ATHLETES: GENDER, NATIONALISM, AND INDIVIDUALISM by QINGRU XU (Under the Direction of Dr. Peggy J. Kreshel) Around the world, sport is principally organized around masculinity. Women are often afforded limited access to sports participation, situated as “others” in a male-dominated domain. This gender inequality is mirrored in sports media; selective representations have a tremendous influence on people’s perception and understanding of sport, athletes, and society. In this study, I examined media representations of two Chinese female athletes of different status—specialized athlete, Ding Ning, and professional athlete, Li Na— in China, a nation in the midst of political/economic/cultural transformation and a sports reform initiative. Analyzing stories drawn from two Chinese web portals, I focused particularly on how gender, nationalism, and collectivism/individualism entered into media representations to determine if there were differences in the portrayals of these two female athletes. The portraits that emerged were very distinctive. A textual analysis revealed significant differences in each of the three conceptual areas. A fourth theme, which I have identified as “monetary value” also emerged. Possible explanations for and implications of differences in the media portrayals of the two athletes at this particular historical moment in Chinese society were provided.
