März 2018 macht die crème de la crème des Tischtennissports in Bremen Station. In der ÖVB-Arena werden der Weltranglisten-Erste Timo Boll und Titelverteidiger Dimitrij Ovtcharov als Topgesetzte bei den mit insgesamt 235.000 Dollar dotierten German Open von Chinas Superstars und dem Rest der Welt gejagt. Es ist das letzte hochkarätige Aufeinandertreffen der Weltspitze vor der Team-WM in Halmstad (29.4. bis 6.5.). Als eines von nur sechs Platinum Events der World Tour 2018 sind die German Open eine der bedeutendsten Meisterschaften im Welttischtennissport. Die Nähe zu den Weltmeisterschaften in Schweden hebt die ohnehin schon hohe Bedeutung des Turniers noch einmal an: Bremen gerät zur letzten ernsthaften Standortbestimmung und damit zum weltweit wichtigsten Individual-Championat in der ersten Hälfte des Jahres 2018.
