Wa Shan – Emei Shan, a Further Comparison

Wa Shan – Emei Shan, a further comparison CHRIS CALLAGHAN of the Australian Bicentennial Arboretum 72 updates his woody plants comparison of Wa Shan and its sister mountain, World Heritage-listed Emei Shan, finding Wa Shan to be deserving of recognition as one of the planet’s top hotspots for biological diversity. The founding fathers of modern day botany in China all trained at western institutions in Europe and America during the early decades of last century. In particular, a number of these eminent Chinese botanists, Qian Songshu (Prof. S. S. Chien), Hu Xiansu (Dr H. H. Hu of Metasequoia fame), Chen Huanyong (Prof. W. Y. Chun, lead author of Cathaya argyrophylla), Zhong Xinxuan (Prof. H. H. Chung) and Prof. Yung Chen, undertook their training at various institutions at Harvard University between 1916 and 1926 before returning home to estab- lish the initial Chinese botanical research institutions, initiate botanical exploration and create the earliest botanical gardens of China (Li 1944). It is not too much to expect that at least some of them would have had personal encounters with Ernest ‘Chinese’ Wilson who was stationed at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard between 1910 and 1930 for the final 20 years of his life. -

The regular consumption of herbal drugs has led to serious concerns regarding their quality, effectiveness, and safety. Thus, relevant scientific evidence has become an important criterion for the acceptance of traditional health claims. The genus Cotoneaster Medikus provides numerous species traditionally used in Asian medicine for the treatment of haemorrhoids, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. This review summarises the achievements of modern research on the Cotoneaster taxa, including ethnobotany, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and toxicology. To date, more than 90 compounds have been isolated or analytically identified in Cotoneaster leaves, fruits, flowers or twigs. These phytochemicals are categorised into flavonoids, procyanidins, phenolic acids, cotonefurans, cyanogenic glycosides, triterpenes, sterols, fatty acids, volatile compounds, and carbohydrates, and many of them are responsible for Cotoneaster pharmacological properties including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, hepatoprotective, anti-diabetic or anti-dyslipidaemic -

This information represents what was known at the end of the 1994 field season. These maps may not represent the most recent information on distribution and range for these taxa but it does illustrate geographic distribution across the assessment area. For many of these species, this is the first time information has been compiled on this scale. For the continued viability of many of these taxa, it is imperative that we begin to manage for them across their range and across administrative boundaries. Of the 173 taxa analyzed, there are maps for 153 taxa. For those taxa that were not tracked by heritage programs, we were not able to generate range maps. Pat Woodruffe’s article incorporating ident- ification keys for Wiltshire ferns is our first contrib- ution on this group of plants. Hopefully, it will lead to increased and more accurate recording of this group. Ken Thwaite’s article is the first we have had on woodland management. Jack Oliver has written about Algae in aquatic plant roots, a topic which is hard to find in botanical works generally. The unfam- iliarity of the material makes his article something of a challenge, but everything is explained clearly, and readers will find themselves knowing things which will be new to many other botanists. The remaining articles pursue themes which have already featured in these pages. Jack Oliver provides further information about ancient trees in the county - this time concentrating on the Aceraceae. There is the usual selection of items from our society plant records Two articles on Bath Asparagus in this issue following one on the same topic in the previous issue might be thought excessive. -

Authors’ abstract: The transpiration of C. salicifolius and C. lacteus plants previously subjected to mild, moderate or severe water stress was persistently reduced compared to the unstressed controls. For C. salicifolius this was due to partial stomatal closure and to a decrease in leaf area following water stress. For C. lacteus it was mostly due to a lengthy reduction in leaf conductance. In previously unstressed C. salicifolius and C. lacteus water stress had an after-effect on stomatal opening, whereby leaf conductance did not increase readily as plant water status recovered after irrigation. Leaf conductance of C. lacteus plants that underwent several stress cycles increased readily after irrigation, independent of leaf water potentials, which were slower to recover. 06/211-4 endelig Uttalelse fra Faggruppe for plantehelse, plantevernmidler og rester av plantevernmidler (Faggruppe 2) i Vitenskapskomiteen for mattrygghet 9. februar 2007 Risikovurdering av pærebrann i Norge BAKGRUNN Plantesykdommen pærebrann forårsakes av bakterien Erwinia amylovora (Burrill) Winslow et al. Bakterien har et vidt spekter av vertplanter i rosefamilien. En nylig utgitt liste inneholder 180 mottakelige arter i 39 slekter. Blant vertplantene finnes arter innen fruktslektene Pyrus og Malus, og prydbusker i slektene Chaenomeles, Cotoneaster, Crataegus, Pyrachanta og Sorbus. Spredningsveier for pærebrann er vurdert på to nivåer; innføring fra andre land (langdistansespredning) og innføring fra andre deler av Norge der pærebrann allerede finnes (kortdistansespredning). Langdistansespredning av pærebrann skjer med infisert vertplantemateriale, mens pollinerende insekter, forurensede bikuber og beskjæringsredskaper er de viktigste årsaker til lokal spredning. Det er vanskelig å holde sykdommen under kontroll. Fytosanitære tiltak, spesielt gjennom lovgivning, er viktig for å hindre introduksjon og spredning av sykdommen. I Norge foregår det kommersiell dyrking av epler på 16 000 daa i 1000 frukthager, og pærer dyrkes på 1320 daa i 353 frukthager. I 2005 hadde epler en førstehåndsverdi på 78 mill kr og pærer en førstehåndsverdi på 5,5 mill kr. Prydbusker, mottaklige for pærebrann blir mye dyrket, og noen arter har spredt seg fra parker og hager i kystsdistriktene. I 1986 ble pærebrannbakterien først påvist i Stavanger og nabokommuner i Rogaland fylke. Siden det har utbredelsen i Norge økt. Cotoneaster bullatus (bulkemispel) og C. salicifolius (pilemispel) som finnes i private hager, parker, langs veier og i kystområder er de artene som er mest utsatt for infeksjon. Fire fylker har hatt tilfeller av pærebrann: Sogn og Fjordane, Hordaland, Rogaland og Vest-Agder. -

Introduction Cotoneaster divaricatus Exotic, invasive plant species have a negative impact on biodiversity, economy and/or public health. Cotoneaster species are potentially invasive alien plant species. For this reason the Invasive Alien Species Team of the Netherlands Food and Con- sumer Product Safety Authority has requested a risk assessment for Cotoneaster. The current risk assessment will focus on the situation in the Netherlands and discuss the following subjects: • Determination of what Cotoneaster species are potentially invasive in the Netherlands • Probability of entry • Probability of establishment in the Netherlands • Probability of spread • Identification of endangered areas based on the results of the probabilities of entry, establishment and spread • I mpact of Cotoneaster spp.
