Nature, Wildlife and Rural Landscape in Spain and Estonia NATURE, WILDLIFE AND RURAL LANDSCAPE IN SPAIN AND ESTONIA Since 2009, eleven rural areas in Spain represented by their corresponding Local Action Groups have been working together in the transnational cooperation programme “WOLF: WildLife & Farmers”. The aim of the project is to promote measures and actions that make it possible for both livestock and wolves as an example of large predators to live together. The project WOLF, which now has additional joined members of Portugal, Romania, and Estonia, aims to boost sustainable development and maintain biodiversity. Edit: “Wolf, wild life & farmers” project of the National Rural Network 1 This growth of the population of wolves has brought along a development of various strategies that undertake the difficult task of achieving coexistence between farming, livestock rearing and wolves, without forgetting about the conservation of the species. The presence of wolves and other large predators in general, in itself shows that the surrounding environment is of exceptional quality and that the rural areas are well preserved. However, this value will be even greater if we consider that only very few countries in the European Union still have these natural treasures of biodiversity coexisting with livestock farming. This guide intends to showcase the quality of this biodiversity, the beauty of the countries and the value of the natural heritage of these rural areas in Spain and Estonia, focusing on wolves and large predators, with the aim to build a unique tourism product. You will discover that the accommodation and nature tourism companies listed in this guide come from as diverse rural areas as Europe itself: there are mountains, large forests, plains and WOLF steppe lands, watercourses and riverbank forests. The listed service providers are the best starting point for learning about our regions and our heritage, cuisine, nature, and wildlife. You In the past years, the European wolf population has changed so that from being a can find a roof in the middle of wilderness, enjoy observing wildlife and visiting emblematic rare and endangered species, in some areas wolves have now grown to healthy places. Behind each of the products and services are a series of values that favour biodiversity, numbers. which are also key factors for preserving our territories. Today it is possible to learn about these emblematic animals without interfering in their lives in areas that have a long tradition of wolf-related heritage. Moreover, you can also observe these predators in the wild in a way that is respectful to the animal. The current estimates for Spain's wolf population are roughly 250 to 300 reproducing packs with a total population ranging between 1,500 and 2,500 wolves making it the biggest wolf population in the whole of Western Europe. A large part of that population can be found in the north-eastern quadrant of the autonomous communities of Asturias, Galicia, and Leon. Even though these regions are also inhabited by bear, their numbers are very low; however, it is possible to observe these animals via nature tour operators and specialised guides. In Estonia, the wolf population is around 300, but in central Estonia in Järva County, this predator shares its territory with other beautiful animals such as bear and lynx that also roam the local forests, making it a highly rewarding destination for nature loving visitors 2 3 Tallin ESTONIA INDEX Asturias LÕUNA JÄRVAMAA KOOSTÖÖKOGU JÄRVAMAA 6 A Coruña Santander Bilbao FUENTES DEL NARCEA ASTURIAS Santiago 14 León Burgos Vigo MONTAÑA DE RIAÑO LEÓN 18 A MONTAÑA LUGUESA LUGO Valladolid 22 OS ANCARES Y FOLGOSO DO COUREL LUGO 26 Salamanca Barcelona SPAIN Madrid MONTAÑA PALENTINA PALENCIA 30 VALLADOLID ZONA NORTE, TIERRA DE CAMPOS VALLADOLID 34 ALISTE, TÁBARA Y CARBALLEDA ZAMORA 38 SANABRIA Y CARBALLEDA ZAMORA 42 SAYAGO ZAMORA 46 From Europe you can choose TIERRA DE CAMPOS, PAN Y NORTE DUERO ZAMORA 50 from several direct flights or 4 stopover in VALLES DE BENAVENTE ZAMORA 54 5 our airports.
ABSTRACT Just a day later, the province of Zamora joined the military national rebelion that happened on 18th july 1936, because the military officials knew about the existence of the coup since spring and, as a result, they supported it. Zamora became one of the sym- bols of the Spain of Franco. Quickly he built that new Spain, first from Burgos and then from Salamanca, by controlling and oppressing every aspect of life. The changes in education, the Falangist control, the Army, the Guardia Civil (spa- nish police) and the clerical orientation from their churchies and offices, together with a lack of information as well as the poor means of communication, designed a kind of behaviour, the moral and thoughts of the people of Zamora, specially made up of far- mers and workers.

SUMMARY.— On the basis of the inventories of the area itself, the tree and bush communities of the central western part of the province of Zamora are described. Af ter placing the territory, a general report is made on the measurable factors conditio ning the existence of the biocoenoses. Floristic, ecological, corological and physiogno mic data of the different associations are also described and new syntaxons are intro duced into the science. The routes from the old Kingdom of Asturias were the first to take the pilgrims to Santiago. The coastal route was as busy as the other, older pilgrims’ ways long before the Spanish monarchs proclaimed the French Way to be the ideal route, and provided a link for the Christian kingdoms in the North of the Iberian Peninsula. This endorsement of the French Way did not, however, bring about the decline of the Asturian and Galician pilgrimage routes, as the stretch of the route from León to Oviedo enjoyed even greater popularity from the late 11th century onwards. Some studies suggest that both residence in rural areas and contact with livestock could be potential risk factors. Methods We performed a retrospective study for the period 2005–2016 of all cases of bacteremia caused by Sb in Galicia (a region in the northwest of Spain). The association between the incidence rate of Sb bacteremia and the number of cattle by province and district was analyzed. Results 677 cases were included with a median age of 76 years, 69.3% males. The most frequent infections were endocarditis (234 cases, 34.5%), primary bacteremia (213 cases, 31.5%) and biliary infection (119 cases, 17.5%). In 252 patients, colon neoplasms were detected (37.2%). S. gallolyticus subsp. gallolyticus was the predominant species (52.3%). Mortality was 15.5% (105 cases). The annual incidence rate was 20.2 cases/106 inhabitants and was correlated with the density of cattle (p < 0.001), but not with rurality. When comparing the two provinces with a strong predominance of rural population, but with important differences in the number of cattle, such as Orense and Lugo, with 6% and 47.7% of Galician cattle, respectively, the rates were very different: 15.8 and 43.6 cases/106, respectively, with an RR of 2.7 (95% CI, 2.08–3.71).
