At first glance, the meaning behind that statement is simple. But the real story goes much deeper. In Indiana, almost seventy years passed between the first calls for women’s voting rights and the passage of the 19th Amendment. And, though momentous, 1920 is just one milestone in a long and ongoing journey, and access to the voting booth is just one part of what it means to be an equal part of the democratic process. The Indiana Women’s Suffrage Centennial, catalyzed by Indiana Humanities, the Indianapolis Propylaeum, the Indiana Historical Society and the Indiana Historical Bureau, working with many grassroots and local partners, marks the anniversary of the 19th Amendment. We invite Hoosiers to honor the ideas and ideals that fueled the suffrage movement in Indiana, and the people who led the way; to engage in a conversation about inclusion, equity, perseverance and power; to consider what remains to be done to ensure that our democracy truly includes everyone; and to identify and act on the lessons of the women’s suffrage movement. OUR GOALS • To inspire Hoosiers to think, read and talk about the history and significance of women’s suffrage • To drive and discover scholarship about women’s suffrage and political participation in Indiana • To highlight Hoosiers who played a role in the suffrage movement in Indiana and nationally • To encourage everyone to vote and engage fully in the democratic process • To inspire civic action and persistence among kids and teens today You can help us achieve our goals by teaching the remarkable and exciting history of women’s suffrage in Indiana. This toolkit was designed for Hoosier educators. In this guide you’ll find resources to help you teach the history of women’s suffrage both nationally and in Indiana, including: • Big ideas about Indiana women’s suffrage and the centennial • Questions for students to think about or do research projects with • A brief history of women’s suffrage in Indiana • Reading and viewing lists for grades K-6th, 5th-8th and 9-12th • Information on book kits and a new speakers bureau to help you teach Indiana women’s suffrage history • A timeline of suffrage milestones in Indiana and nationally • A selection of primary sources for teaching Indiana women’s suffrage history Indiana Women’s Suffrage Centennial | Teacher Toolkit 3 BIG IDEAS These are some of the big ideas we encourage all Hoosiers, including teachers and students, to think, read and talk about as we mark the centennial of women’s suffrage. • Today, women’s suffrage seems like an obvious component of democracy. One hundred years ago, it was a controversial idea that even some women opposed. Championing it required courage, perseverance and organized activism. • The centennial of women’s suffrage is an opportunity to honor the Hoosiers who played a role in the suffrage movement. • Like all social movements, suffrage was an imperfect process. Activists disagreed over strategy and tactics, and women of color and working-class women didn’t always have a seat at the table. One of the lessons is that forming “a more perfect union” is and always has been messy. • While the 19th Amendment gave women access to the voting booth, the struggle for full equality continues. Today, we all can learn from the women who fought for the vote as we fight to ensure equality for all. • As we acknowledge the impact suffrage had on women, we also should consider where our laws, culture and institutions might be keeping others from fully engaging in our democracy. • The role of Hoosiers in the suffrage movement is a story that isn’t fully known or told. This is Indiana’s opportunity to delve into that history and capture it for future generations. KEY QUESTIONS Encourage your students to do research about Indiana women’s political efforts, including the fight for suffrage. Here are some questions that can get them started. • Who were the rebellious women (and men) who led the women’s suffrage movement in Indiana? • How did women shape policy and politics before they won the right to vote? • Who opposed women’s suffrage, and why? • What was left undone? • Who got left behind? • How did women’s official entry into the political arena shape policy and the political landscape after 1920? • How did the women’s suffrage movement inspire and affect the women’s equality movements of the 1960s and 1970s? • In what ways does the struggle continue? • What barriers to full equality and civic participation remain for women? How and why are the barriers steeper for women of color and working-class women? Indiana Women’s Suffrage Centennial | Teacher Toolkit 4 HISTORY OF WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE IN INDIANA “An Act of Tardy Justice”: The Story of Women’s Suffrage in Indiana In 1851, Winchester native Amanda Way called for a Early Steps women’s rights convention—the kick off to a 69-year effort to guarantee women’s right to vote in Indiana. Yet when the war was over, despite women’s support of men, neither Congress nor the Indiana General Assembly recognized women’s hard work and devotion.     ‘the truest form of patriotism’ 9 ‘A new kind of patriotism’?1 British women in international politics revious chapters have outlined the diverse contexts in which reformulations of patriotism and citizenship emerged. The fem- P inist movement produced arguments based on ‘separate spheres’ ideologies which held that women’s contribution to the public sphere would bring an increased recognition of humanity in international relations. In contrast, peace workers such as Priscilla Peckover based their arguments on how a full understanding of pacifism would lead to a revision of what was understood by the ‘best interests’ of the nation. The methods of organisation used by Priscilla Peckover, Ellen Robinson and the IAPA were arguably more collaborative than those of the Peace Society, because they managed to work with people and organisations with whom they had political or ideological differences. This chapter con- siders the issues involved in collaborative organisation in greater depth, with reference to the International Council of Women (ICW). The ICW was founded in 1888, and was intended to provide a point of international contact and focus for the feminist movement. It grew steadily across the globe and continues to function today, maintaining a formalised structure built upon the model established in its early years. Even in its first decades, however, patriotisms and nationalisms intruded on the ICW in unexpected and often counter-productive ways. For example, the International Council of Women found that some potential members were hostile to the prospect of organising inter- nationally. In 1890, Millicent Garrett Fawcett put it to the secretary of the ICW that the British and US women’s movements could have nothing to learn from one another.

    “Remember the Ladies” by Ray Tetz— Women’s Equality Day is celebrated in the United States on August 26 to commemorate the 1920 adoption of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, listed below are the names of 50 American women—all born before the year 1900—who were dedicated to the cause of equality and justice. These women were daughters, sisters, wives, and mothers. Authors, educators, activists, and organizers. Some were born into privilege; some were born into slavery. Many of these were women of faith.     May Wright Sewall Indianapolis, Marion County May 27, 1844 – July 22, 1920 One of Indiana’s best known leaders of the women’s suffrage movement, May Wright Sewall is a significant Hoosier, known as a courageous and groundbreaking woman. Born Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1844, Sewall graduated in 1866 from Northwestern Female College (later absorbed into Northwestern University) where she earned a laureate of science and a Master of Arts degree in 1871. She was an influential educator, teaching in Mississippi and Michigan. She later took a position at the high school in Franklin, Indiana. After marrying the school’s principal, Edwin Thompson, she and her husband moved to Indianapolis, where they taught at the old Indianapolis High school. After Edwin died of tuberculosis, she married Theodore Sewall in 1880. Starting her career as a suffragist in the 1880s, Sewall became a prominent ally of suffrage leaders, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She founded more than fifty organizations that promoted women’s rights and education, including the International Council of Women, Indianapolis Equal Suffrage Society, the Girls’ Classical School, and the Indianapolis Women’s Club. She led Indiana suffrage groups and was charged with organizing an 1888 convention in Washington, D.C., to mark the 40th anniversary of the Seneca Falls Convention. She also was a delegate to the Universal Congress of Women in Paris and became president of the National Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1889. She also was instrumental in forming the National Council of Women of the United States. Sewall wrote three works: Higher Education of Women in the Western States of the U.S., Neither Dead nor Sleeping, and History of the Woman Suffrage Movement in Indiana.

It was election day in West Hammond, a city straddling the Indiana-Illinois border, and local reformer Virginia Brooks was running for school board president. Brooks' female supporters spent the day at the polls, encouraging voters to elect Brooks to office. However, when Hammond resident Julius Lessner appeared at the voting site, tension and violence escalated between the parties. According to an article in The Inter Ocean, a Chicago newspaper, Lessner: delivered himself of a few personal views of the election to a crowd of voters.

    HOW TO BOOK A SPEAKER The Indiana Women’s Suffrage Centennial has curated a list of compelling talks by expert speakers on various topics related to women’s suffrage and political participation before and after the passage of the 19th Amendment. Each talk, along with the speaker’s bio and contact information, is included in this catalogue. Thanks to funding from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Hillenbrand, Inc., tax-exempt Indiana- based organizations can apply to host a speaker in 2020. If awarded, the Indiana Women’s Suffrage Centennial will cover the speaker’s fee; host organizations are asked to offer the cost of travel to their organization (though some speakers may choose not to seek reimbursement for travel costs). Speakers bureau talks are open to any tax-exempt organization including schools, libraries, history organization, museums, community centers and more. Applications are due November 1, 2019. TO BOOK A SPEAKER 1. Read each of the talk descriptions carefully and decide which one would be the best fit for your goals and your audience. On the application, you can list up to three preferred talks and rank your preference. 2. SETTING THE STAGE: To begin the lesson plan, you might want the environment of your entire classroom to reflect women in American or Indiana history. We encourage you to use this lesson plan as a springboard to further knowledge about Hoosier women who have made a difference in this country. 2 BACKGROUND TEXT FOR EDUCATORS The importance of women’s role in American history is often obscured by the accomplishments of their male counterparts. Women have battled the perception that their job was to be leaders in the home, while men were to determine the direction of society.
