KEHILATH JESHURUN BULLETIN Page Three RABBI HASKEL LOOKSTEIN RECEIVES Praying For The Sick NATIONAL RABBINIC LEADERSHIP AWARD On The Shabbat FROM ORTHODOX UNION When someone is ill there is a practice to have a mi shebeirach made as a prayer for the person's recovery. In our Congregation, in order to maintain a mood of reverence and dignity during such prayers and in order to avoid the unnecessary prologing of the service, we have adopted the practice of making a collective mi shebeirach at the conclusion of the Torah reading. Recently, however, a problem has devel¬ oped as the list for the mi shebeirach has grown longer with each passing week and as additional people line up alongside the bima to provide more names to Mr. Rosenberg to insert into the prayer. The result of all this is not prayer but disrup¬ tion. The mood of reverence and concern for the ill is replaced by kibbitzing, idle con¬ versation and a disruptive kind of behavior which is unbecoming for any synagogue, es¬ pecially ours.
