ALASKA’S ECOLOGY 2018 3 Alaska’s Ecology is dedicated to the memory of Val Chabot Val was the kind of teacher whose enthusiasm for the natural world inspired her students and everyone around her. She motivated students to recognize, celebrate, and take responsibility for their roles in ecosystems. Val edited and improved these teaching materials after she moved to Alaska in 1993. Val’s accidental death in 1994 while banding peregrine falcons in Interior Alaska was a profound loss for education. Ecology is a field of study or science – thestudy of relationships of organisms to other organisms and their physical environment. Ecologists see the WHOLE as necessary for understanding the PARTS. The term was introduced in 1866 by a German biologist Ernst Heinrich Haeckel. It is derived from the Greek words for “household” and “economy” giving it a mean- ing close to the economy of nature. Ecology draws on many other sciences including climatology, hydrology, soil anal- ysis, oceanography, physics, chemistry, geology, biology, physiology, taxonomy, and mathematics.     This process wherein 2 organisms help one another is often called symbiosis or mutualism. The terms are often used interchangeably. Technically, mutualism is an ecological interaction between at least two species (=partners) where both partners benefit from the relationship. Symbiosis on the other hand is defined as an ecological interaction between at least two species (=partners) where there is persistent contact between the partners. Coral is an extremely important habitat. Coral is an animal which has a dinoflagellate living in it called Zooxanthellae You can see where the Zooxanthellae live in the coral and these provide oxygen to the coral which provides protection to the Zooxanthellae If the coral is stressed, the Zooxanthellae leave the coral and the coral becomes “bleached” and may die if the Zooxanthellae do not return. Fish have evolved so that the coral provides them with a kind of “background” against which they become harder for predators to see them WORMS Several different phyla Nematodes, Platyhelminthes, annelids etc) . Some people do eat worms but several kinds are parasitic and there are dangers in doing this. Many marine animals will eat worms.     Reticulate Evolution Everywhere Nathalie Gontier Abstract Reticulation is a recurring evolutionary pattern found in phylogenetic reconstructions of life. The pattern results from how species interact and evolve by mechanisms and processes including symbiosis; symbiogenesis; lateral gene transfer (that occurs via bacterial conjugation, transformation, transduction, Gene Transfer Agents, or the movements of transposons, retrotransposons, and other mobile genetic elements); hybridization or divergence with gene flow; and infec- tious heredity (induced either directly by bacteria, bacteriophages, viruses, pri- ons, protozoa and fungi, or via vectors that transmit these pathogens). Research on reticulate evolution today takes on inter- and transdisciplinary proportions and is able to unite distinct research fields ranging from microbiology and molecular genetics to evolutionary biology and the biomedical sciences. This chapter sum- marizes the main principles of the diverse reticulate evolutionary mechanisms and situates them into the chapters that make up this volume.     Unit Three Single-celled Organisms Michelle Wood Associate Professor Department of Biology University of Oregon Ph.D. in Zoology University of Georgia Michelle attended the University of Corpus Christi where she earned B.A. degrees in Biology and Speech. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a Ph.D., she continued her work as a postdoctoral student at the University of Chicago. She studied genetics and the evolutionary ecology of recently discovered photosynthetic organisms. After her postdoc, she continued as part of the research faculty in Ecology and Evolution Department until 1990. She then moved to the University of Oregon where she is now an Associate Professor. Dr. Wood’s research interests include studying picocyanobacteria from an evolutionary viewpoint. She is looking at how these microorganisms can survive in a wide range of marine environments. For instance, in the Arabian Sea, she and her student, Nelson Sherry, found that these organisms could reproduce several times a day and reach population sizes of more than a million cells per milliliter. These were free-living picocyanobacteria that bloomed during the summer Monsoon season. In the winter she found many examples of picocyanobacteria living symbiotically with dinoflagellates. She would like the students to know that people who study the ocean are a community of creative, curious, and wonderful people. Background Information Lichens are an easily found but often overlooked example of symbiosis that can be readily studied in the classroom. Lichens demonstrate the mutual relationship of fungi and algae or fungi and cyanobacteria. The algae carry out photosynthesis, while the fungi absorb and hold water and nutrients and provide a place for the algae to live. Other easily found fungal symbioses are the mychorrhizal associations between fungi and the roots of plants. The study of lichens can be extended into comparing species by taking samples from various sites and doing an assortment of related field activities. Lichens are an example of symbiotic mutualism which is one of the four main types of symbiotic relationships; the other three types are parasitism, commensalism, and predation. Students need to be able to distinguish between these four types of relationships and determine which organisms are benefiting or being harmed in the relationship. Materials • Samples of lichens collected from rocks or tree bark (If lichens are available in the school yard, students can collect their own lichens to study; only a small amount is necessary.) CAUTION: If students have a mold/fungus allergy, have prepared slides available for use in this activity.

We show that, for the system without Allee effect, the system admits a unique positive equilibrium which is globally attractive. However, for the b2r2 system with Allee effect, if the Allee effect is limited (β < ac(ac+br) ), then the system could admit a unique positive equilibrium which is locally asymptotically stable; if the br Allee effect is too large (β > ac ), the system has no positive equilibrium, which means the extinction of the species. The Allee effect reduces the population density of the species, which increases the extinction property of the species. The Allee effect makes the system “unstable” in the sense that the system could collapse under large perturbation. Numeric simulations are carried out to show the feasibility of the main results. Mutualism,SAMPLE or symbiosis, is a positiveCHAPTERS relationship between two or more species in a community that benefits all individuals of those species. However, theories based on traditional population models show that mutualistic relationships tend to have destabilizing effects on the dynamics and structure of a community. On the other hand, these destabilizing effects do not seem consistent with the types of cooperative behavior that are often observed. Recently, ecologists and economists have addressed these inconsistencies using game theory, and have gained new insights about the conditions under which cooperative behavior emerges as a stable outcome or equilibrium of a system.
