Arianna Antonielli holds a PhD in English and American Literature and spe- cializes in Humanities Computing and Digital Publishing. She teaches Digital Culture and collaborates with the OA Publishing Workshop and Project at the University of Florence. She is Journal Manager of the journals Lea, Studi irlandesi, and Journal of Early Modern Studies. She has published on W. Blake, T. S. Eliot, A. France, A. Gyles, M. Peake, C. A. Smith and W.B.     ARBËRESH LEXICOGRAPHIC ARCHIVE (ALeA) Francesco Altimari, Maria Luisa Pignoli, Battista Sposato UNIVERSITY OF CALABRIA LABORATORY OF ALBANOLOGY The ALeA (Arbëresh Lexicographic Archive) is a project of computational lexicography, sponsored by the Laboratory of Albanology of the Department of Languages and Sciences of Education at the University of Calabria, for the systematic linguistic collection of heritage of the Albanian communities in southern Italy. The ALeA is divided into two main areas of access: a literary lexicon and a dialectal lexicon. The literary area ensures the collection of literary works (prose and verse) of all Italo- Albanian authors who produced written testimonies from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century. It also provides transcription, translation, commentary and concordance of lexical contents contained therein through a careful philological processing of manuscripts and/or typescripts. The dialectal area lists lexical items of Arbëresh spoken dialects, both synchronically and diachronically. From the synchronic point of view, dialectological investigations on field use the following collection and implementation tools of lexical data: the Atlas Linguarum Europae, whose structure has been digitalized, and thus represents the first example of digitalized ALE; the Italian Linguistic Atlas, the Dialectological Atlas of the Albanian Language, the Swadesh List, and specific questionnaires already used for the Linguistic Albanian Atlas. Lexical data are organized in individual lexical lemmatized forms. Each form gives access to: (i) a documentary section, where there are both the ethnotexts (proverbs, phraseology, poems, nursery rhymes) and extra-textual and multimedia information (photographs, drawings, videos, multimedia scheme of the ALE Genealogical Tree, multimedia maps of toponyms), and (ii) purely linguistic information (pronunciation of the lemma, phonetic transcription, Italian translation, meanings, grammatical classification).

Savoia Università degli Studi di Firenze (<[email protected]>; <[email protected]>) Abstract In this contribution we provide an overview of the linguistic history of the Albanian people taking both linguistic and social-cultural aspects into account. The historical and descriptive synthesis of Albanian lin- guistics will provide the background for understanding the competition between the Gheg and Tosk traditions, the old and culturally different Albanian minorities in Italy and Greece, and the role of linguistic stan- dardization imposed by the communist totalitarian regime. As the title suggests, people’s culture and identity must also be looked for in the vicissitudes of their linguistic heritage and its changes and reshaping in connection with social processes. Our aim is to explore these factors in the evolution of the Albanian language and its use in communication.     Tasks for building a grammar e-book: an application in the Albanian context Francesco Altimari, Eugenia Mascherpa, Michael Cronin, Maria Caria University of Calabria, Italy [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Abstract The question “how can students learn grammar and have fun doing so?” prompted us to adopt a task- based approach to learning Albanian literature and language, on a course offered within a virtual learning environment. Twelve Italian students who were beginner-level Albanian Language learners participated in the study in which students used digital tools to complete tasks that mainly involved the development of comic strips and cartoons in which the characters spoke Albanian. Each task-cycle began with a pre-task where the teacher exemplified the linguistic structures. For example, a cartoon in which the teacher presented himself provided the students the necessary syntactical chunks to create their own introduction-cartoons: the teacher’s video thus provided a scaffold by modelling both the language and the expected cartoon product. During the second phase of learning when students created their artefacts, they used Pearltrees as a learning notebook to compile ideas, keep notes on their own progress and catalogue sites which contained useful learning material. This enabled students to work autonomously yet creatively and also made it possible for students to view the work and progress of others, provide suggestions, request clarification and collaborate when they wished to. As the course progressed, each student came to occupy a branch of Peartrees which grew as the course proceeded, thus becoming an e-portfolio of each student’s learning progression.

In the early nineteenth century historic scenario, in which Albania was reduced to a mere geographic expression within the Turkish-Ottoman Empire by centuries long oppressive foreign domination, the Italian-Albanian community (or Arbëreshë) brought about an important movement of “awakening” of identity, better known as the movement of the “Rilindja” (Rebirth). The leading exponent of this literary movement was the Calabri- an-Albanian Girolamo De Rada (1814-1903) who published in Naples in 1836 Canti di Milosao, when he was just twenty-two. The poem marks the entrance of Albanian literature into modernity and represents one of the highest literary expressions not only of Arbëresh (Italian-Albanian) literature and of Albanian literature but also of all European romantic literature. For centuries, they kept a close community in the Italian villages preserving their language, culture, rituals and traditions. These elements have defined them as “others” in the Italian community over the centuries, but today, they are better described as Italians who also embrace the Arbëresh culture. This dissertation explores the narratives of Arbëresh authors such as Carmine Abate, Anna Stratigò, and Pino Cacozza, who have preserved glimpses of their culture in their writings, thus creating an oasis that I call “the Arbëresh Utopia.” I situate them in the larger context of Arbëresh history, and in the environment where their stories are located.
