Urban Sketchers in Lisbon Urban Sketchers in Lisbon ABOUT Urban Sketchers in Lisbon The Urban Sketchers travels in Portugal would not be complete without a trip to Lisbon. This time around they are represented by Lis Watkins from Britain and by the host José Louro. They visited the city’s most important sites such as the historic neighbourhoods of Baixa, Bairro Alto and Belém, and Parque das Nações, an area of the city which was recently rebuilt. In an experience which is definitely different from the usual urban scenery, they took up the challenge of drawing during the NOS Alive music festival, in Algés, one of the most important music festivals in Portugal. Near Lisbon, the Sintra Natural Park (Parque Natural de Sintra), the Estoril coast, Cascais and the Arrábida Natural Park (Parque Natural da Arrábida) were the inspiration to draw and admire the diversity of the Portuguese landscape.     FEELING JAMES BOND IN THE PORTUGUESE RIVIERA Secret mission in Cascais. This Portuguese town, with its more than 650 years of history, combines glamour and tradition in equal parts. It’s a destination for the European bourgeoisie since the 19th century, but also for the English and German spies during World War II. In fact, it was the perfect scenario for the creation of the most popular character in the film industry: James Bond. Following the course of history of the country and the world, and of Portugal as a neutral country, Cascais has become, beyond a safe haven in a Europe in turmoil, a place of vital importance during World War II, where diplomacy and espionage coexisted. The region hosted many European personalities, several royal families, and charismatic artists, running away from an Europe at war in search of a safe place. The concentration of such important people forced the belligerent countries to send their secret agents here. Portuguese hospitality has soon seduced many of these early visitors to stay here until the end of their days. As Josef von Habsburg of the Austrian Royal House said "We feel at home here." The necessary ingredients of magic and mystery were created, giving the Portuguese Riviera a unique atmosphere that still prevails. It was not by chance that Ian Fleming created his famous character - the secret agent 007 James Bond - in 1941, shortly after his last stay in this region. Auxiliary Professor at ISCTE-IUL and Researcher at Dinamia ‘CET-IUL _______________________________________________________________ Introduction The political and economic scenario of the new millennium involved a critical discourse on architecture. After the affluent 1990s, a time when the European project became more consolidated, came a time of instability that spread through different aspects of society - east-west conflicts, financial crises and technological developments led to a change of cycle and new world order. This process evidenced the vulnerability of European convergence and revealed the difficulty southern European countries experienced in keeping up with the demands of today’s economy. A rather introspective and humanistic feeling, the concern with environmental issues, identity and sovereignty principles influenced the discourse of several social movements which were organized in this period. In the field of architecture, this disquiet triggered a regenerating sensitivity and the idea of returning to a solid basis, able to consolidate the foundations of project practice and culture. In Portugal, the fours decades of democracy were analyzed so as to uncover an idealistic basis that would allow for overcoming the crisis. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Ricardo Agarez | Abstract Abstract This thesis looks at the contribution of real and constructed local traditions to modern building practices and discourses in a specific region, focusing on the case of Algarve, southern Portugal, between 1925 and 1965. By shifting the main research focus from the centre to the region, and by placing a strong emphasis on fieldwork and previously overlooked sources (the archives of provincial bodies, municipalities and architects), the thesis scrutinises canonical accounts of the interaction of regionalism with modernism. It examines how architectural ‘regionalism’, often discussed at a central level through the work of acknowledged metropolitan architects, was interpreted by local practices in everyday building activity. Was there a real local concern with vernacular traditions, or was this essentially a construct of educated metropolitan circles, both at the time and retrospectively? Circuits and agents of influence and dissemination are traced, the careers of locally relevant designers come to light, and a more comprehensive view of architectural production is offered. Departing from conventional narratives that present pre-war regionalism in Portugal as a stereotype-driven, one-way central construct, the creation of a regional built identity for Algarve emerges here as the result of combined local, regional and central agencies, mediated both through concrete building practice and discourses outside architecture.

It takes into account the pro- lix discourse of Oliveira Salazar, the head of government, as well as Duarte Pacheco’s extensive activity as minister of Public Works, and the positions and projects of the architects themselves. It also considers the allegedly peripheral status of architectural elites, and the role played by decision makers, whether politicians or bureaucrats, in the intricate process of architectural renewal. The article shows that a non-radical form of nationalism has always prevailed as a discourse in which to express the unique Por- tuguese spirit, that of a people that saw itself as transporting Christian morality and faith across the world, a civilizing role that the country continued to fulfil in its over- seas colonies. Taking the architectural legacy of the Estado Novo in its complexity leads to the conclusion that, while the dictatorship did not dismiss modernization outright, and though it adopted what could be superficially considered fascist traits, the lan- guage of national resurgence disseminated by the Portuguese regime did not express a future-oriented fascist ideology of radical rebirth.
