In doing memory; post-war so, the paper intends to critically engage with the theme of architecture; post-socialist ‘culture’, its impact on residential developments, and its architecture character in the process of recuperation of post-war society in Sarajevo. The development of residential architecture is followed through the four historical periods that had the greatest impact on its formation. Setting the scene to better understand the current built design challenges, post-war, post-socialist culture and architecture are analysed through the lens of T.S. Elliot's (1948) theory on culture. Specifically, the paper refers to the criteria Elliot defined as essential for a culture to survive; Organic Structure, Regional Context and Balance & Unity in Religion. Finally, the paper identifies the main obstacles in the process of cultural transformation of Sarajevo, indicating an urgent need for addressing the issues of cultural and architectural vitality. Among the various proposals for building a quantum computer, superconducting qubits have rapidly progressed and hold good promises in the near-term future. In particular, the possibility to design the required interactions is one of the most appealing features of this kind of architecture. This thesis deals with some detailed aspects of this problem focusing on architectures based on superconducting transmon-like qubits. After reviewing the basic tools needed for the study of superconducting circuits and the main kinds of superconducting qubits, we move to the analyisis of a possible scheme for realizing direct parity measurement. Parity measurements, or in general stabilizer measurements, are fundamental tools for realizing quantum error correct- ing codes, that are believed to be fundamental for dealing with the problem of de- coherence that affects any physical implementation of a quantum computer. While these measurements are usually done indirectly with the help of ancilla qubits, the scheme that we analyze performs the measurement directly, and requires the engi- neering of a precise matching condition. -

The Architectural Style of Bay Pines VAMC
The Architectural Style of Bay Pines VAMC Lauren Webb July 2011 The architectural style of the original buildings at Bay Pines VA Medical Center is most often described as “Mediterranean Revival,” “Neo-Baroque,” or—somewhat rarely—“Churrigueresque.” However, with the shortage of similar buildings in the surrounding area and the chronological distance between the facility’s 1933 construction and Baroque’s popularity in the 17th and 18th centuries, it is often wondered how such a style came to be chosen for Bay Pines. This paper is an attempt to first, briefly explain the Baroque and Churrigueresque styles in Spain and Spanish America, second, outline the renewal of Spanish-inspired architecture in North American during the early 20th century, and finally, indicate some of the characteristics in the original buildings which mark Bay Pines as a Spanish Baroque- inspired building. The Spanish Baroque and Churrigueresque The Baroque style can be succinctly defined as “a style of artistic expression prevalent especially in the 17th century that is marked by use of complex forms, bold ornamentation, and the juxtaposition of contrasting elements.” But the beauty of these contrasting elements can be traced over centuries, particularly for the Spanish Baroque, through the evolution of design and the input of various cultures living in and interacting with Spain over that time. Much of the ornamentation of the Spanish Baroque can be traced as far back as the twelfth century, when Moorish and Arabesque design dominated the architectural scene, often referred to as the Mudéjar style. During the time of relative peace between Muslims, Christians, and Jews in Spain— the Convivencia—these Arabic designs were incorporated into synagogues and cathedrals, along with mosques. -

CASTELLÓN (SPAIN) CERAMICS IN PORTUGUESE ARCHITECTURE (16TH-20TH CENTURIES) A. M. Portela, F. Queiroz Art Historians - Portugal [email protected] ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to present a synoptic view of the evolution of Portuguese architectural ceramics, particularly focusing on the 19th and 20th centuries, because the origins of current uses of ceramic tiles in Portuguese architecture stem from those periods. Thus, the paper begins with the background to the use of ceramics in Portuguese architecture, between the 16th and 18th centuries, through some duly illustrated paradigmatic examples. The study then presents examples of the 19th century, in a period of transition between art and industry, demonstrating the diversity and excellence of Portuguese production, as well as the identifying character of the phenomenon of façade tiling in the Portuguese urban image. The study concludes with a section on the causes of the decline in the use of ceramic materials in Portuguese architecture in the first decades of the 20th century, and the appropriation of ceramic tiling by the popular classes in their vernacular architecture. Parallel to this, the paper shows how the most erudite route for ceramic tilings lay in author works, often in public buildings and at the service of the nationalistic propaganda of the dictatorial regime. This section also explains how an industrial upgrading occurred that led to the closing of many of the most important Portuguese industrial units of ceramic products for architecture, foreshadowing the current ceramic tiling scenario in Portugal. 1 CASTELLÓN (SPAIN) 1. Formal aspects and initial costs are the primary design concerns, using current long lifespan construction, with little consideration given to future maintenance or future needs. This situation represents a tremendous waste of resources (present and future), and there is a growing perception of the need to address these issues. One of the possible change trends lies in a revision of current design practices to increase building adaptability accommodating current construction logics, but there is a lack of examples bridging the gap between current (international) theory and (Portuguese) practice. The Lisbon EXPO 98 World Exhibition was the largest example of urban regeneration in Portugal, in which several buildings addressed the need for adaptability according to different design logics, since their original uses would cease or change upon the exhibition’s closure. This paper will present the case study of an EXPO 98 building, Portugal’s Pavilion by Pritzker Winner Architect Álvaro Siza, as an example of the use of design strategies to provide adaptability (at structural, spatial and material levels) within an institutional building, using current Portuguese construction possibilities. -

Author Bio Breanna Vick is a Graphic Designer based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is interested in developing a deeper understanding of different methods of design research. On a site visit to Morocco and Spain in May through June of 2017, Breanna tested her knowledge of design research by observing Moorish design integrated in Andalusia. By developing a research paper, establishing sketchbooks, collecting photographs, and keeping journal entries, she was able to write, design and construct this narrative book. With Breanna’s skill-set in creating in-depth research, she has a deep understanding of the topics that she studies. With this knowledge, she is able to integrate new design aesthetics into her own work. During this period, there is a striking dynamism in the defi- Rnition of original plans, new building solutions and in the first architectural sculpture ex- periments, especially in the regions of Burgundy, Poitou, Auvergne (France) and Catalonia (Spain). However, it is between 1060 and 1080 that Romanesque architecture consolidates its main techni- cal and formal innovations. According to Barral i Altet, the plans of the Romanesque churches, despite their diversity, are well defined around 1100; simultaneously, sculpture invades the building, covering the capitals and decorating façades and cloisters. The Romanesque has been regarded as the first European style. While it is certain that Romanesque architecture and arts are a common phenomenon to the European kingdoms of that period, the truth is that one of its main stylistic characteristics is exactly its regional diversity. It is from this standpoint that we should understand Portuguese Romanesque architecture, which developed in Portugal from the late 11th century on- wards.
