  • Revolution and Counterrevolution in Catalonia – Carlos Semprún Maura
Revolution and Counterrevolution in Catalonia – Carlos Semprún Maura Introduction to the Spanish Edition I wrote this book between 1969 and 1971, when the tremors of the May-June 1968 outbreak in France had not yet subsided, and when a wide range of topics, new for many people, nourished actions, discussions, projects, journals and books. Among these topics, of course, were the libertarian revolutions and the shopworn theme of self-management. To me it seemed that the logical as well as the obvious thing to do was to participate in my own way in these discussions and in the critique of totalitarianism (“red” fascism as well as the “white” variety), by writing a book about the experiences of “self- management” in Catalonia and Aragon in 1936-1939, concerning which almost no one (if not absolutely no one) knew anything in France at that time. I was myself only then discovering the importance of these phenomena as I engaged in research and gathered documents and data for the book. During those same years, it had become fashionable for Parisian publishers to carry some “leftist” titles in their catalogues, in order to satisfy a new youthful customer base and to thus increase the profits of the various publishing houses. This book, however, was offered to a whole series of publishers without being accepted by any of them, until it was to “miraculously” find a home with a respectable, and originally Catholic, publisher (Mame), that was at the time attempting to change its image to keep pace with the times. My book did not bring it any good luck since its publisher went out of business shortly thereafter, sinking into the most total bankruptcy….

  • How the NKVD Framed the POUM
How the NKVD framed the POUM An extract of the memoirs of Jesús Hernández, a leading member of the Spanish Communist Party and minister in the republican government during the Spanish civil war, explaining how Soviet secret police framed and persecuted the anti-Stalinist communist group the POUM during the conflict. Marxists.org editor’s note Hernández was a leading member in the Spanish Communist Party (PCE) during the Spanish Civil War and served as one of the two communist ministers in the Spanish republican government. After the war he challenged the Dolores Ibárruri (La Pasionaria) party leadership and was expelled from the party (1944). After the break between Stalin and Tito he sided with Tito. During the rest of his active life, he worked at the Yugoslav embassy in Mexico City. He died in 1971. The following text is taken from the memoirs of Jesús Hernández, published in 1953 in Mexico as Yo fuí un ministro de Stalin (I Was a Minister of Stalin). The memoirs have never been translated in full to english. The sections reproduced below are about the stalinist persecution and suppression of the POUM. They were originally serialised during 1953 in Labor Action, the US socialist paper published by Max Shachtman’s Workers Party. The translation has been checked against the Spanish text and amended. Notes have been added. How the NKVD framed the POUM WHEN I ARRIVED at the ministry, Cimorra handed me a small closed envelope.[1] Inside was a card. I read: ‘Dear friend: If you have nothing more important to do, I expect you for tea at six in the evening.

Abstract The article makes a review of various origins were in 1935 converged in the POUM militants. Addition of Joaquim Maurín and Andreu Nin, in Catalonia converged two major traditions: which came from the revolutionary syndicalism incarnated by the CNT and that came from the radical nationalism.

Specifically in 1933, a huge debate exploded within Catalan politics with regards to the "fascist tendencies" of a part of the separatist movement and the label stuck, fanned especially by anarchosyndicalist propaganda1. This opinion came to be shared, just to cite a few English-oriented sources, resonant with their influence on later historians, by E. Allison Peers (who saw the Catalan imitation of the military-type organization of fascism), Gerald Brenan (who bluntly perceived "Catalan Fascism"), and Salvador de Madariaga (who spoke of "a colored-shirt corps which it was difficult to distinguish from a Fascist organization")2. Curiously enough, Franco régime partisans could share similar indignation at such a development: the "falangista" Maximiano García Venero referred to a "xenophobe fascism, naturally paramilitary and bourgeois"3.

This was one way of projecting the movement abroad and seeking strategic models and international support, even though only occasionally and with no lasting ties except Catalonia’s participation in the Congress of European Nationalities starting in 1926. This organisation encompassed the national minorities which were theoretically safeguarded by the League of Nations. The time span of this article ranges from 1885 to 1939. The Irish and Czech national movements were the most influential ones outside the sphere of Marxist ideol- ogy. In the 1930s, curiosity about and admiration for the status of the nationalities within the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was based on an idealised image which the circumstances of the 1936 Spanish Civil War contributed to feeding. Keywords: nationality, stateless nations, national self-determination, patriotism, Catalonia, Catalanism From its inception, political Catalanism sought to frame ganisation was formed, with Francesc Macià at the helm, its claims for Catalonia’s self-governance within the which won a striking minority of votes in the elections. framework of the European nationalities without a state The third period runs from 1919 until 1931, with the of their own.

Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona [email protected] abstract This article examines the political career of writer and journalist Jaume Miravitlles i Navarra (Figueres, 1906 – Barcelona, 1988). It proposes that the importance of his contributions to intellectual thought and politics deserve reassessment, partly because Miravitlles’s political progress was typical of certain left-wing European in- tellectuals during the period in discussion: of those whose initiation in politics was full-blooded Leninism, but who then progressively distanced themselves from Soviet ideology and finally became profoundly critical of political Marxism. Miravitlles played a leading role in the Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939, when he headed the Generalitat’s Propaganda Commissariat. After 1939, in exile, he became one of the leading narrators of human experience during this period of war and revolution, a role that he reaffirmed on his return to Catalonia in 1963. key words Leninism, the avant-garde, Salvador Dalí, the Workers’ and Peasants’ Bloc (Bloc Obrer i Camperol), the Republican Left of Catalonia (Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya), the Civil War, the Propaganda Commissariat (Comissariat de Propaganda), exile, cold war, historiography, political thought. A description of recently acquired archives and collections as well as major accruals to archives received by the IISH is published annually to keep this survey up to date. Like the GIA, this supplement is subdivided into the categories ‘persons’, ‘organizations’, and ‘subjects’, arranged alphabetically. As to the summaries the following components can be discerned: 1. Access: as a rule consultation is not restricted; any restrictions are indicated by Ã. 2. Name: names of persons include dates of birth and death when known. In the case of international organizations with names in more than one language, the name chosen corresponds to the language in which most of the documents were written. Among organizations that have changed their names, the one used most recently has been selected. Previous names of organizations are mentioned in the condensed biography or history. The names of subject collections are mostly in English. 3. Period: first and last date of the documents present. Where only a few documents are from a certain year or period, they are listed between parentheses. 4. Size: in linear metres. 5. • Marxism, War and Revolution Trotsky and the POUM
Andy Durgan Marxism, War and Revolution Trotsky and the POUM First published in Revolutionary History, Volume 9, nº2, 2006. THE Spanish Revolution marked the end of a cycle that began with the Russian revolution of 1917. The scope and complexity of the social experiments that took place in the first months of the Spanish Civil War were even more far reaching than in Russia 19 years before. The defeat of the Spanish Republic was a massive blow to the international working-class movement, a defeat that has to be seen in the context of the rise of fascism and Stalinism on a world scale and the burying of the hopes of human liberation that had been ignited by the events in Russia in 1917. The experience and lessons of the Russian revolution run through the writings of Leon Trotsky, who from exile, hounded and slandered by his capitalist and Stalinist enemies alike, was trying desperately to reorganise the scattered forces of revolutionary Marxism. For Trotsky, the significance of events in Spain in 1936 was clear: for the first time since China in the mid-1920s there was the real possibility of a victorious socialist revolution. In many parts of Spain the workers and peasants responded to the military uprising by taking over the factories and the land and organising their own militias. But alongside a myriad of local revolutionary committees, the Republic’s institutions continued to exist. This situation of virtual dual power could not last. For the Stalinists and their social democratic and liberal allies, the struggle in Spain was between democracy and fascism.

  • The Conscience of the Spanish Revolution: Anarchist Opposition to State Collaboration in 1937
THE CONSCIENCE OF THE SPANISH REVOLUTION: ANARCHIST OPPOSITION TO STATE COLLABORATION IN 1937 Daniel Evans Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Leeds School of Languages, Cultures and Societies July 2016 ii The candidate confirms that the work submitted is his own and that appropriate credit has been given where reference has been made to the work of others. Research trips were partly funded by the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies at the University of Leeds and the AHRC Research Training Support Grant Funding scheme. The notion of undertaking original research into Spanish anarchism did not occur to me until I had lived in Spain for a couple of years, and my understanding of the language was sufficiently developed. I owe a great deal to the friends whose patience and generosity made that possible, and to the enormous good fortune I had in meeting Uta, Marc, Gustavo, Alfredo, Vanesa, David, Patricia, the Garcia Anguita family, Oscar, Mara, Helena, Jordi and many others, particularly the stalwarts of the Spanish soul scene. Any difficulty that might have been caused by leaving Spain was alleviated by the presence in Leeds of old friends who made me feel at home again: Carl, Mallie, Mark, Karen, Juan, Maria and others; and new friends made through political and cultural activities, in particular those I met through the Critical Cinema group and Leeds No Borders.
