Yet they also open up large and revealing issues for professional historians, shedding light on how societies conceptualize and understand their pasts.1 This article explores the way that British public discourse has grappled with the First and Second World Wars. At the heart of the British problem with these two defining conflicts of the twentieth century is an inability to construct a positive, teleological metanarrative of their overall ‘meaning’. By exploring this theme through historiography and memorialization, it is possible not merely to illuminate Britain’s self-understanding of its twentieth-century history, but also to shed light on the country’s contorted relationship with ‘Europe’, evident in party politics and public debate right down to the ‘Brexit’ referendum of 2016. The concept of mastering the past ( Vergangenheitsbewältigung ) originated in post-1945 West Germany as that country tried to address the horrendous legacies of Nazism. -

The Graduate Center of the City University of New York History Department Hist 80200 Literature of Modern Europe II Thursdays 4:15-6:15 GC 3310A Prof. Benjamin Hett e-mail [email protected] GC office 5404 Office hours Thursdays 2:00-4:00 or by appointment Course Description: This course is intended to provide an introduction to the major themes and historians’ debates on modern European history from the 18th century to the present. We will study a wide range of literature, from what we might call classic historiography to innovative recent work; themes will range from state building and imperialism to war and genocide to culture and sexuality. After completing the course students should have a solid basic grounding in the literature of modern Europe, which will serve as a basis for preparation for oral exams as well as for later teaching and research work. Requirements: In a small seminar class of this nature effective class participation by all students is essential. Students will be expected to take the lead in class discussions: each week one student will have the job of introducing the literature for the week and to bring to class questions for discussion. Over the semester students will write a substantial historiographical paper (approximately 20 pages or 6000 words) on a subject chosen in consultation with me, due on the last day of class, May 13. The paper should deal with a question that is controversial among historians. Students must also submit two short response papers (2-3 pages) on readings for two of the weekly sessions of the course, and I will ask for annotated bibliographies for your historiographical papers on March 28. -

Advisor: David Armitage Author: Dzavid Dzanic The Civilizing Sea: The Ideological Origins of the French Mediterranean Empire, 1789-1870 Abstract This dissertation examines the religious, diplomatic, legal, and intellectual history of French imperialism in Italy, Egypt, and Algeria between the 1789 French Revolution and the beginning of the French Third Republic in 1870. In examining the wider logic of French imperial expansion around the Mediterranean, this dissertation bridges the Revolutionary, Napoleonic, Restoration (1815-30), July Monarchy (1830-48), Second Republic (1848-52), and Second Empire (1852-70) periods. Moreover, this study represents the first comprehensive study of interactions between imperial officers and local actors around the Mediterranean. -

Controlling Nature and Transforming Landscapes in the Early Modern Caribbean Laura Hollsten he Early Modern Caribbean is a highly in- teresting area for the global as well as the environmental historian.1 h e Caribbean islands were some of the most important colonies in the seventeenth century and part of the international trade network as one of the cornerstones of the so-called T “triangular trade” between Europe, Africa and the Americas. h e growth of markets and buying power in Europe stimulated investments in sugar plan- tations. Westbound European ships, on their way to what they ini- tially thought of as India, i rst arrived here bringing with them peo- ple, animals, diseases, arms and the beginnings of a new culture. h e Caribbean has sometimes been characterised as a place where people, plants and animals were acclimatised before they entered the mainland of America. Mary Louise Pratt’s concept of a contact zone, designating an area of contact between dif erent peoples in a colonial situation, can be applied to contacts between biotypes, animals and plants, as well as humans.2 h e seventeenth-century Caribbean was a contact zone for dif erent peoples, as well as animals and plants. -

Chairperson Dr. Victor Bailey Date approved: April 6, 2012 iii ABSTRACT Many observers of British national identity assume that decolonization presaged a crisis in the meaning of Britishness. The rise of the new imperial history, which contends Empire was central to Britishness, has only strengthened faith in this assumption, yet few historians have explored the actual connections between end of empire and British national identity. This project examines just this assumption by studying the final moments of decolonization in Africa between 1959 and 1963. Debates in the popular political culture and media demonstrate the extent to which British identity and meanings of Britishness on the world stage intertwined with the process of decolonization. A discursive tradition characterized as the “Whiggish vision,” in the words of historian Wm. Roger Louis, emerged most pronounced in this era. This vision, developed over the centuries of Britain imagining its Empire, posited that the British Empire was a benign, liberalizing force in the world and forecasted a teleology in which Empire would peacefully transform into a free, associative Commonwealth of Nations. -

This body is a community of over 1400 of the leading minds that make up the UK’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences. Current Fellows include the classicist Dame Mary Beard, the historian Sir Simon Schama and philosopher Baroness Onora O’Neill, while previous Fellows include Sir Winston Churchill, C.S Lewis, Seamus Heaney and Beatrice Webb. Prof Runciman has been recognised for his work on the history of political thought (from Hobbes through to late nineteenth and twentieth century political thought); theories of the state and political representation; and contemporary politics and political theory. History 80020 – Literature Survey – European History Tuesdays, 6:30-8:30pm (classroom TBA) Professor Steven Remy ([email protected]) Weekly office hour: Tuesdays 5-6 (room TBA) This course has two purposes: (1) to introduce you to recent scholarship on the major events, themes, and historiographical debates in European history from the Enlightenment to the present; and (2) to prepare you to take the written exam in this field. Each week you will read - and come to class prepared to summarize and discuss - a different title. The titles are assigned below. Each student will write a 700-900 word summary of the book s/he has been assigned and bring a paper copy for me and for each of his/her classmates. I will determine your final course grade as follows: 60% book summaries and 40% in class discussions. Written book summary and class participation requirements are found at the end of the syllabus. A word about the titles I’ve selected: I have selected high-quality scholarship reflecting the temper and direction of current research on and methodological approaches to modern European history. I have also emphasized literature that situates European developments in global contexts. An expanded list of titles for further reading is attached to the syllabus. In addition to keeping up with scholarly journals in your area of interest, I encourage you to stay current by tracking reviews and debates in the following publications: Journal of Modern History, The New York Review of Books, the Times Literary Supplement, the London Review of Books, aldaily.com, H-Net reviews, The Nation, Jewish Review of Books, and Chronicle of Higher Education book reviews.
