Thomas Worcester (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2017). The title of this review article alludes to the famous emblem included in that extraordinary 952-page in-folio monument to the art of printing and engrav- ing, painstakingly assembled by Jesuits of the Flandro-Belgian province, which marked the centenary of the Society of Jesus and was published in Antwerp in 1640: the Imago primi saeculi. In book ii, on the growth of the Society (Societas crescens), one finds the emblem of a young, winged child standing between two globes showing the two hemispheres of the world. This image is found im- mediately below the words “The Missions to the Indies of the Society’ (Societa- tis misiones Indicae) and directly above the motto “One World Is Not Enough” (Unus non sufficit orbis). In his brief but exemplary entry on the Imago in the book under review (385), Paul Begheyn remarks how this “celebration of cel- ebrations, the triumphal arch in rich, luxuriant scrolls, in bizarre and pompous cartouches,” to borrow the words of the Italian critic and collector Mario Praz (1896–1982), soon attracted the sarcastic attention of the philosopher Blaise Pascal, in the latter’s coruscatingly witty defence of the Jansenist Antoine Arnauld, the Provincial Letters (1656–57). The fifth letter, dated March 20, 1656 opens thus: Sir, I am about to fulfil my promise and to furnish you with some of the leading principles of morality of the Jesuit fathers – “These men, emi- nent in learning and in wisdom, guided by a wisdom from above, which is more infallible than all the rules of philosophy.” You may suppose I am jesting in using such expressions; [but] I am quite serious, they are their own words, in their work entitled, Imago primi saeculi. -

How to Deal with Muslims? Raymond Lull and Ignatius of Loyola Paul Richard Blum As a small contribution to the topic of the relationship between Christians and Muslims, I should like to exploit two sources that shed light on it from a late medieval and a Renaissance angle.1 One is Raymond Lull’s Vita coetanea2 and the other is Ignatius of Loyola’s autobiography, which was originally referred to as Acta P. Ignatii.3 What is peculiar about these sources is that both are non-thematic accounts of the relation of a Christian to Muslims; each is an autobiographical narrative about events that occurred before the author’s main career, but which was dictated late in his life. In addition, the narratives are indubitably designed to instruct their followers, as they are written in the third person, which decreases subjectivity and enhances authority. I tend to read the two accounts as deliberate messages about what was important to each author, to the effect that all of Acta may be read as an agenda et vitanda because the narrated facts acquire emblematic meaning. If we keep in mind Ignatius’s instruction to visualize the life of Christ (compositio loci), we may as well visualize the episodes of his life for the sake of gaining delight and instruc- tion about our own courses of action. Without further ado, here is a quick sum- mary of the two stories: 1 The title of this article has been deemed provocative by some people. The word ‘to deal with’ appeared to be demeaning. However, there must have been a suspicion that this ‘dealing’ might be derogatory because it is about Muslims. -

Jesuit Historiography Online The Historiography of the Jesuits in China (10,456 words) Paul Rule [email protected] Article Table of Contents Last modified: December 2016 Official Histories The main challenge in writing a survey of the China Mission Precursors historiography of the Jesuits in China is to determine The Ming Period (1581–1644) what is most important in such a veritable flood of The Qing–to the publications over four and a half centuries. The Jesuits accompanied the first early modern incursions of Europeans into China in the late Ming and one of its founding fathers, St. Francis Xavier, died attempting to enter China in 1552. They established themselves firmly in China after many attempts firstly in Macao in the 1560s and then in Guangdong in 1582. From 1601, they had a house in Beijing. They survived the dynastic transition to the Manchu (Qing) and flourished in the mid Qing period only to fall from favor with both Rome and the Qing emperors over the Chinese Rites Controversy in the early eighteenth century. In the mid-nineteenth century, the Jesuits returned to a fast changing China and contributed to those changes through their educational activities and significantly through separate “national” Jesuit missions rather than an international common “Jesuit” one. After the 1911 revolution, the now highly institutionalized Jesuit enterprise was challenged and eventually destroyed by first the nationalist revolution then the Communist one. -

FRANCIS XAVIER IN EUROPE AND ASIA Rachel Miller, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2016 Recent historical studies have focused on the vital role that Catholic saints played after the Council of Trent, investigating how these holy figures were utilized to alleviate all manner of problems besetting the Post-Tridentine Church, emerging European nation states, and individual Catholics. My dissertation, however, approaches this issue from an art historical perspective, considering how images of St. Francis Xavier, the sixteenth-century Jesuit missionary, exercised considerable agency in an early modern world rife with global crisis. Specifically, I investigate Xaverian prints and paintings created in border zones of early modern Catholicism or in territories of the Iberian empires, particularly Antwerp, Goa, and Naples. -

Dislocation and Record Keeping: The Counter Archives of the Catholic Diaspora Liesbeth Corens When early eighteenth-century English Catholics looked back on the first wave of exiles in the sixteenth century, they remarked specifically on the importance of writing and record keeping. Though they were otherwise vicious opponents in their attempts to discredit the other’s Catholic party, both the Jesuit Thomas Hunter and the secular priest Charles Dodd agreed that the sixteenth-century expatriate Robert Persons continued to participate in the mission through writing. Hunter celebrated the reputation of his predecessor in the Society of Jesus, stating that: He [Robert Persons] was look’d upon by all, as the chief Support of Religion in England; hence no Endeavours were wanting to apprehend him, and because the Means made us of for this End brought grevous Inconveniencies upon most Catholick Families, it was thought proper, he should withdraw for some Time out of the Nation. There was another Motive which hasten’d his Return into France, viz. journal of jesuit studies 1 (2014) 542-557 brill.com/jjs Robert Persons’s Precarious Correspondence Victor Houliston University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa [email protected] Abstract The Jesuit mission to England during the reign of Elizabeth depended a great deal on written correspondence with Rome and other missionaries “in the field.” As the superior of the mission, Robert Persons wrote frequently and sometimes volumi- nously to his colleagues and associates, as well as to interested lay people and politi- cal figures. This article considers the effect of the urgency and the unpredictability of his correspondence. He was often on the run, so letters could go astray, be inter- cepted or delayed. Letters took two to three weeks to reach Rome, and generally crossed each other, so that policy discussion was subject to a degree of guess-work and anticipation. With the capture and execution of Campion, Persons’s flight to France, the vicissitudes of Scottish and French politics (which crucially affected the fortunes of the English Catholics), and the growth of factionalism within the exile community, ignorance or misunderstanding could play a significant role in deter- mining strategy and forming attitudes. Our own interpretation of Elizabethan Catholicism has also been affected by the loss of much of this correspondence at the suppression of the Society.
