Owen Glendower and the Failure of Historical Romance
52 53 Yankee puritanism and Southern aristocracy, was evinced in American literature as early as the works of James Fenimore Cooper. More recently, revisionist historical works, such as Stephen Saunders Webb, 1676: The End of American Independence (New York: Knopf, 1984) and Francis Jennings, The Invasion of America, have The Mythology of Escape: Owen expanded on the Cooper vision of the upstate New York-native Glendower and the Failure of American connection. These works have enhanced the sense of the Historical Romance native Americans as historical actors, not just passive primitives. This is far more Powysian in spirit than a view of the Indians as noble, poetic savages, transatlantic "Celts." Introduction
Abstract: This essay looks at the interconnections between the cultural industry of popular romance and best-selling novels set in an Irish historical context. In particular, it examines two best-selling novels by North American author Karen Robards, which have not yet been examined in academia: Dark of the Moon (1988) and Forbidden Love (2013; originally published in 1983). Although this small selection constitutes only a preliminary study of an expanding popular genre, it is my hope that it will serve as a relevant example of how Ireland is exoticised in the transnational cultural industry of romance. Drawing on several studies on popular romance (Radway 1984; Strehle and Carden 2009; and Roach 2016), and on specific sources devoted to the study of historical romance, in particular when set in exotic locations (Hughes 2005; Philips 2011; Teo 2012; 2016), I intend to demonstrate how these novels by Karen Robards follow the clichés and conventions of the typical romances produced in the 1980s. As I show, the popularity that Robards’ novels still enjoy reflects the supremacy of the genre and the wide reception of this kind of fiction in the global market. Introduction In her semi-academic, ethnographic study Happily-Ever-After, Catherine Roach (4) identifies romance as “the prime cultural narrative of the modern Western world”. This is a best-selling genre which dominates the publishing industry, particularly in North America and other Western European countries. It is generally a woman-centred genre, as most authors and readers are female (110). The basic plot of the (heterosexual) romance narrative revolves around a hero and a heroine, who fall in love, work through many trials and tribulations and end up happily. -

19th Century American Authors, Literature, Informational Texts, and Visual Representation (Correlating to Cottonwood Middle School’s 8th Grade Language Arts textbook: The Elements of Literature) Lisa Ashley Cottonwood Middle School Cottonwood, AZ NEH Summer Institute 2009 Introduction and Rationale Having participated in this year’s Picturing Early America: People, Places, and Events 1770-1870, a four-week-long summer institute on interpreting and teaching early American art, my goal for the upcoming 2009-2010 school year is to incorporate visual references to EACH of my 8th grade Language Arts literature lessons. Being a Title One, low income school, our classroom materials are limited. We do have, however, classroom sets of the Holt textbook, Elements of Literature. The text contains fictional prose from the American authors Edgar Allen Poe, Mark Twain, and Nathanial Hawthorne. Additionally, the text also contains a nonfiction piece on Harriet Tubman and The Underground Railroad. Goals I have begun to build files with 19th century images of authors and illustrations of their works. These files will be available for any other teachers who would like to use them and who teach similar content in their English/Language Arts classrooms. This Power Point is just the beginning presentation of my files. National Endowment for the Humanities “Picturing America” Images Because our district was awarded a set of these images, I hope to enrich our current Language Arts curriculum by creating lessons connecting the images to as many reading and writing activities as possible. This endeavor to couple texts with images will be an ongoing, continuous process for me this year: I will need to find images of prints, paintings, and illustrations that are suitable and engaging for my students and pair them with activities that will extend and enrich our already existing texts. -

It is uncertain who first instituted the custom of granting medals to individuals for acts of bravery or for military services. Scipio Aemilius is said to have bestowed wreaths of roses upon his men of the eleventh Legion at Carthage in 146 B. C., and the Chinese are reported to have issued awards during the Han Dynasty in the year 10 A. D., though no de- scription thereof is given. Tancred says there used to be in the National Coin Collection of France, a gold medal of the Roman Emperor Tetricus, with loops at- tached, which made it appear as if it was an ornament to wear. Perhaps the Donum Militare, and bestowed for distinguished services. The Moral Geography of Cooper's Miles Wallingford Novels by Donald A. Ringe ecause he is so well known for his five Leatherstocking tales, James · Fenimore Cooper is most often associated with such New York settings as Otsego Lake, the scene of The Pioneers (1823) and The Demlayer (1841), or other partsB of the upstate wilderness, the setting for The Last of the Mohi cans (1826) and The Pathfinder (1840). But these are not the only parts of New York that Cooper uses in his novels. Equall y important is the lower Hudson Valley between Albany and New York City, an area he used in both The Spy (182 1) and in parts of Satanstoe (1845), but which plays an especiall y significant role in his double novel of 1844, Afloat and Ashore and Miles Wallingford. The ashore part of his book is set for the most part on Clawbonny, a farm in Ulster County. It is the home of five generations of Mi les Wallingfords, the first of whom "had purchased it of the Dutch colonist who had originall y cleared it from the woods."! T his is the point from which the latest Miles, the narrator of the novel, embarks on his four sea voyages and to which he returns at last when his many adventures are over. T hough the action of the novel takes place between 1797 and 1804, the narration occurs some forty years later as the sixty-year old Miles Wallingford recounts the adventures of his yo uth.
