Each writer has used history as a base from which to examine the construction of gender. By fore grounding the female and by shifting the focus of history onto the private, domestic sphere, these women move toward the restoration of the female voice, both within the historical context of their fiction, and within their contemporary societies. Chapter 1 analyses the wider literary context of Scottish women’s historical fiction, touching on early exponents of the genre, and on the more recent writers who have focused on popular historical romance. Male writers in the field are discussed in relation to their own uses of history, and their comparatively scant attention to issues of gender. Chapter 2 moves into discussion of Naomi Mitchison (1897-1999). Mitchison’s early work in the historical genre, between publication of The Conquered in 1923 and the appearance of The Corn King and the Spring Queen in 1931, represents a radical approach to the examination of gender within fiction in the early part of the twentieth-century. Set predominantly in the ancient world, Mitchison’s novels and stories exploit the distance offered by ancient history to examine a range of gender-related issues, such as the economic independence of the female within society, sexual expression, and same-sex relationships. In Chapter 3, which discusses Mitchison’s epic Scottish novel, The Bull Calves (1947), many of these issues are treated again, yet the change in Mitchison’s own social and political situation and her strengthening identification with Scotland, inform a less radical approach to the female role than is evident in the first phase of her writing. Further, a move toward the more recent historical setting of 1747 in The Bull Calves is partially responsible for curtailing the more overt feminism of her early work. Chapter 4 discusses three novels by the contemporary writer Sian Hayton (1933-). Cells of Knowledge (1989), Hidden Daughters (1992) and The Last Flight (1993), comprise a Dark-Age trilogy in which female identity is explored. Hayton’s texts set up a system of oppositions between Christian and pagan and male and female, which Hayton then attempts to deconstruct, and in many ways, her strong supernatural heroines provide a positive female image in relation to the monks they encounter. I argue, however, that she is not entirely successful in this, and that the trilogy’s feminism is undermined, to a degree, by a deep-rooted patriarchal framework. 4 Chapter 5 concludes this study with an examination of Margaret Elphinstone’s Islanders (1994). Elphinstone (1948-) moves away from the supernatural elements found in Hayton’s trilogy, toward a more realist portrayal of the way in which women in Old Norse society may have lived. My discussion focuses on the strategies of resistance Elphinstone provides for her female characters in response to the restrictions of their patriarchal community, and asks whether the ultimate failure of her heroine to find fulfilment is influenced by contemporary gender structures. This study argues that the portrayal of the female within Scottish women’s historical fiction is reflective of continuing inequality in the contemporary socio-political environment. 5 Acknowledgements Thanks to: Douglas, Joyce, Inga, Johanna, Hazel, Katy and Kirsten. The aim of this thesis is to discuss the ways in which three Scottish women writers, Naomi Mitchison, Sian Hayton and Margaret Elphinstone, have successfully examined issues of gender through their historical fiction. The thesis describes the socio-cultural and literary context of their work and attempts to show where and why they are successful. My assertion that all three writers have produced feminist historical fiction is based on the application of Pam Morris’s definition of ‘feminism’ as an understanding of ‘the social and psychic mechanisms that construct and perpetuate gender inequality’1 and a commitment to changing them. I would argue that all three of these female authors highlight these social and psychic mechanisms through their fictionalised historical societies, and that in exposing gender inequality within the changing conceptualisation of twentieth-century Scottish society, they each endeavour to challenge it. In the early press con- ferences at Ground Zero he repeatedly compared the bravery and resourceful- ness of New Yorkers and Londoners, their heightened sense of community forged by danger, and the surge of patriotism as a town and its population came to symbolize a nation embattled. His words had immediate resonance, despite vast differences between the two situations. One reason for the Mayor’s turn of mind was explicit: he happened at that moment to be reading John Lukacs’ Five Days in London, although the book examines the British Cabinet’s response to the German invasion of France some months before bombing of the city got un- derway. Without doubt Tony Blair’s outspoken support for the United States and his swift (and solitary) endorsement of joint military action also reinforced this mental coupling of London and New York. But the historical parallel, however imperfect, seemed to have deeper appeal. Soon after George W. Bush was telling visitors of his admiration for Winston Churchill, his speeches began to emulate Churchillian cadences, Karl Rove hung a poster of Churchill in the Old Execu- tive Office Building, and the Oval Office sported a bronze bust of the Prime Min- ister, loaned by British government.1 Clearly Churchill, a leader locked in conflict with a fascist and a fanatic, was the man for this season, someone whom all political parties could invoke and quote, someone who endured and won in the end.

This conference paper was written to be read aloud to accompany slides of the book covers: it is not a formal academic paper ready for publication. In this paper I argue that writing the past as an estranged history gives authority to the female experience in the historical novel. To do this, I will be discussing how two authors use the sciences to regender ‘the pasts we are permitted to know’ into ‘those we wish to know’, and to ‘explore the deep desires and dreams that lie beneath all constructions of the past’: Naomi Mitchison and Nicola Griffith. 1 By ‘estrangement’ I am working from Farah Mendlesohn’s formulation of ‘knowingness’, 2 of knowing that you are in a created world, that the world is estranged from you because you know it isn’t real. It is also a strange world because it is not your world. In science fiction, fantasy and historical fiction the estrangement can be overt, as in the portal fantasy or the time-travelling historical novel, but it can also be immersive. Mitchison and Griffith both wrote immersive historical novels predicated on the authority of the female experience, that estrange the reader by showing how the woman’s experience has been excluded – estranged, if you like - from the accepted, normalised, written record. I will be looking at how these authors deploy science, and scientific research in their fiction, since both these authors are as well known for their science fiction as for their historical novels.

More recently, revisionist historical works, such as Stephen Saunders Webb, 1676: The End of American Independence (New York: Knopf, 1984) and Francis Jennings, The Invasion of America, have The Mythology of Escape: Owen expanded on the Cooper vision of the upstate New York-native Glendower and the Failure of American connection. These works have enhanced the sense of the Historical Romance native Americans as historical actors, not just passive primitives. This is far more Powysian in spirit than a view of the Indians as noble, poetic savages, transatlantic "Celts." Ian Duncan 12 Powys's interest in this area was, as usual, clairvoyant and prophetic; it went unmatched in any visible American literary production until the recent appearance of William Least Heat Owen Glendower, so melancholy in its Moon's PriaryErth, (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1991). preoccupation with lost origins, was the novel of John Cowper Powys's "homecoming." In 1934, Powys imposed a deceptive narrative closure upon the first sixty years of his life in the great Autobiography, and left America, where he had written his Wessex romances, to return to Britain, eventually settling in Wales in 1936. Powys's Welsh essays, collected in Obstinate Cymric (1947), record the identification of his "philosophy up-to-date" with "the idea of Wales" as a configuration of landscape, mythology and race.l Yet Powys had never lived there; the place of

    Abstract: This essay looks at the interconnections between the cultural industry of popular romance and best-selling novels set in an Irish historical context. In particular, it examines two best-selling novels by North American author Karen Robards, which have not yet been examined in academia: Dark of the Moon (1988) and Forbidden Love (2013; originally published in 1983). Although this small selection constitutes only a preliminary study of an expanding popular genre, it is my hope that it will serve as a relevant example of how Ireland is exoticised in the transnational cultural industry of romance. Drawing on several studies on popular romance (Radway 1984; Strehle and Carden 2009; and Roach 2016), and on specific sources devoted to the study of historical romance, in particular when set in exotic locations (Hughes 2005; Philips 2011; Teo 2012; 2016), I intend to demonstrate how these novels by Karen Robards follow the clichés and conventions of the typical romances produced in the 1980s. As I show, the popularity that Robards’ novels still enjoy reflects the supremacy of the genre and the wide reception of this kind of fiction in the global market. Introduction In her semi-academic, ethnographic study Happily-Ever-After, Catherine Roach (4) identifies romance as “the prime cultural narrative of the modern Western world”. This is a best-selling genre which dominates the publishing industry, particularly in North America and other Western European countries. It is generally a woman-centred genre, as most authors and readers are female (110). The basic plot of the (heterosexual) romance narrative revolves around a hero and a heroine, who fall in love, work through many trials and tribulations and end up happily.

    French and British Female Intellectuals and the Soviet Union. The Journey to the USSR, 1929 – 1942 Angela Kershaw (Aston University) The question of why intellectuals between the wars were fascinated by the USSR has been extensively debated by intellectual historians of both France and Britain. According to Neal Wood, “the ‘ultimate explanation’ of the appeal of communism is forever concealed from rational inquiry in the minds and hearts of many diverse individuals” (9), but rational inquiry can reveal a collective, cultural fascination through analysis of individual textual residues. Paul Hollander argues that pro-Soviet enthusiasm amongst Western intellectuals in the 1930s had its roots not in knowledge about the Soviet Union but in Western intellectuals’ changed – that is, more negative – attitudes towards Western Europe (103-104). Disenchanted with their own society, they were predisposed to find the Soviet regime to their liking and, furthermore, were fearful that if they returned with negative reports they would be labelled reactionaries (104, 109-110). Such “negative” fascination was doubled in both France and Britain by a more longstanding and primarily cultural “Russophilia”, which predated the 1917 revolution and had rather more to do with the faith, grandeur and resignation of the “Russian soul” supposedly depicted by Dostoievsky and Chekov than with the political realities of either Tsarist or Soviet Russia (see Northedge & Wells, Britain and Soviet Communism, 137-157 and Schor, L’Opinion française et les étrangers, 152-161). In France, Russophilia became complicated by the close relationship between the “mode russe” and the community of expatriate anti-Soviet Russian dissident intellectuals resident in Paris after 1917, which made a clear distinction between “authentic” Russian culture in exile and the Soviet “perversion” of Russian traditions (see Livak, How it Was Done in Paris).
