Indeed, in all maps of agricultural land use, most hyper-arid, arid, and semi-arid drylands are considered unproductive. Yet, modern societies in arid and semi-arid drylands still practice rainfed cultivation under regimes of much lower annual rainfall. This paper presents the results of ethnographic and cross-cultural investigations in the cultivation of Pearl millet, Finger millet and Sorghum, with a global perspective. We use published ethnographic material and novel data collected on the field to build and test models that display the interaction of ecological and geographic variables in explaining agricultural practices. The aim of this research is to show how rainfed agriculture is practised much more often, and in much more suitable areas, than normally reported. This holds the potential for the understanding of how these practices can play a pivotal role for long-term resilience and future sustainability of agricultural systems in drylands. -

Legacies of Colonialism and Islam for Hausa Women: An Historical Analysis, 1804-1960 by Kari Bergstrom Michigan State University Winner of the Rita S. Gallin Award for the Best Graduate Student Paper in Women and International Development Working Paper #276 October 2002 Abstract This paper looks at the effects of Islamization and colonialism on women in Hausaland. Beginning with the jihad and subsequent Islamic government of ‘dan Fodio, I examine the changes impacting Hausa women in and outside of the Caliphate he established. Women inside of the Caliphate were increasingly pushed out of public life and relegated to the domestic space. Islamic law was widely established, and large-scale slave production became key to the economy of the Caliphate. In contrast, Hausa women outside of the Caliphate were better able to maintain historical positions of authority in political and religious realms. As the French and British colonized Hausaland, the partition they made corresponded roughly with those Hausas inside and outside of the Caliphate. The British colonized the Caliphate through a system of indirect rule, which reinforced many of the Caliphate’s ways of governance. The British did, however, abolish slavery and impose a new legal system, both of which had significant effects on Hausa women in Nigeria. The French colonized the northern Hausa kingdoms, which had resisted the Caliphate’s rule. Through patriarchal French colonial policies, Hausa women in Niger found they could no longer exercise the political and religious authority that they historically had held. The literature on Hausa women in Niger is considerably less well developed than it is for Hausa women in Nigeria. -

E-mail Address: [email protected] ℡+2348032477652 Abstract The Fulani Jihad (1804-1810) led by Shehu, Uthman Dan Fodio was successfully prosecuted against the established Hausa dynasty in Northern Nigeria. It led to the emergence of a theocratic state, the Sokoto Caliphate, which was administered largely as a federation, due to its wide expanse and diverse composition of its people. The causes, management and impact of the Jihad as well as important lessons for national integration and development in contemporary Nigerian political life form the basic themes of this paper. Key words: Jihad, Integration, Theocracy, National Development, Caliphate Introduction The Fulani Jihad (1804-1810), had its heart and beginning in Gobir. It should be noted that the very essence of the Jihad against established Hausa dynasty was in itself a revolution in relationship between the Hausa and the Fulanis. It is informative to note that Islam was introduced into Hausa land about the 14 th century by foreign Mallams and merchants, such as Wagara Arabs and the Fulanis (Adeleye 1971:560; Afe 2003:23; Hill,2009:8). Miller* Research Fellow, African Studies Center, Boston University, USA The Abakua´ mutual-aid society of Cuba, recreated from the E´ kpe` leopard society of West Africa’s Cross River basin, is a richly detailed example of African cultural transmission to the Americas. Its material culture, such as masquerades and drum construction, as well as rhythmic structures, are largely based on E´ kpe` models. Its ritual language is expressed through hundreds of chants that identify source regions and historical events; many can be interpreted by speakers of E` f`k,ı the pre-colonial lingua franca of the Cross River region (Miller 2005). With the help of both E´ kpe` and Abakua´ leaders, I have examined relationships between the musical practices of West African E´ kpe`, Cuban Abakua´, as well as Cuban migrants to the United States whose commercial recordings have evoked West African places and events historically relevant to Abakua´, meanwhile contribut- ing to the evolution of North American jazz. Studies of the Department of African Languages and Cultures, No 51, 2017 ISSN 0860-4649 Abubakar Zaria Ibrahim Ahmadu Bello University Sokoto Caliphate scholars and the classical Islamic philosophers: issues in divine command theory of ethics 1 Abstract: Western philosophers formulated ethical theories such as egoism, virtue, existentialism, deontology, contractualism and utilitarianism, and illustrated how these are applicable in benefitting individuals and societies in building a complete moral life. Interestingly, there existed some societies that had little or no contact with the West but which have also developed morally acceptable ideas of living. Such are, for example, the Muslims that have established kingdoms and empires all over Asia, Middle East and Africa. The ethical principles developed by these societies may be what we can call a divine command theory, which of course also exists in the West. It is a theory which follows religious beliefs and sources. The Muslims, who practice the religion of Islam, have intellectuals, scholars and thinkers who were philosophically inclined. This paper demonstrates that the Sokoto Caliphate scholars, trailing the classical Islamic philosophers, used the highest book of authority in the religion, the Qur’an , to explain life. The Qur’an is closely supported by the hadith [sayings, actions and approvals of the Prophet of the religion]. Many ethnic groups and nations of Sub-Saharan Africa qualify, although some groups are of a size larger than a tribal society. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract That Most Perfidious Institution is a study of Africans - slaves and slave owners - and their central roles in both the expansion of slavery in the early nineteenth century and attempts to reform servile relationships in the late nineteenth century. The pivotal place of Africans can be seen in the interaction between indigenous slave-owning elites (aristocrats and urban Euro-African merchants), local European administrators, and slaves themselves. My approach to this problematic is both chronologically and geographically comparative. The central comparison between Senegal and the Gold Coast contrasts the varying impact of colonial policies, integration into the trans-Atlantic economy; and, more importantly, the continuity of indigenous institutions and the transformative agency of indigenous actors. -

Accepted 10 March, 2011 The paper examines the complexities between traditional and political leadership, science and technology and sustainable development in the context of developing countries. Particular resource information was drawn from Ghana’s experience. Available literature was also reviewed. The participatory methodology was used for data collection. This included Literature review or review of existing research data, Community forum, Focus group discussions, Interview of key informants and Community cafes. Key informants including chiefs, researchers, and community opinion leaders were interviewed on their perception on how science, technology and tradition can co-exist to demystify the issues of sustainable development in the rich cultural Ghanaian societies. Descriptive sampling design was used and covered various communities of Ghana. A sample size of 500, making up 100 households of about 5 people, were sampled for their views, comments and perceptions on indigenous knowledge, traditional leadership, environmental best practices. The sampling procedures employed included incidental, purposive, snowballing and cluster to identify floating respondents, groups and key informants through identification by friends, colleagues and neighbours. It was identified that both traditional and national politics have critical roles to play in ensuring sustainable development, as they stand a greater chance to demystify the misconceptions about science within the rich cultural environments of the Ghanaian society. -
