You’re not catching him on one of his good days–though, to be honest, he hasn’t had many of those lately anyway. Today’s specific distress is mostly about how his precious pooch, Narcissus, can’t be found. It turns out she was actually just outside enjoying nature and the outdoors, a concept totally foreign to the Emperor who is mostly concerned with decorum, etiquette, reserved manners, and most importantly, style.

  • ALEX: Hello and Welcome to Another Episode of the Princess and the Podcast, the Best Hans Christian Andersen Analysis Podcast out There
ALEX: Hello and welcome to another episode of The Princess and the Podcast, the best Hans Christian Andersen analysis podcast out there. I'm Alex ANA: and I'm Ana. Today we will be talking about Anderson's rocky relationship with royalty through performance and analysis of his tales, "The Princess and the Pea" and "The Emperor's New Clothes". These are two tales that are critical of royalty, which is unusual for Anderson who usually wrote stories which celebrated princes and princesses. ALEX: But before we get to the reading of those two tales, why don't we talk a little bit about Anderson's life and relationship with royalty? ANA: Great idea. Let's start with a bit of background. Anderson grew up poor in the city of Odense, Denmark. His obsession with royalty might have even started at a young age because his father actually believed that they were long lost Royalty. ALEX: Oh, interesting. And yeah, obviously, it remained a theme throughout his life. He surrounded himself with nobility and was always almost ashamed of his poor background, and apparently his rich friends didn't shy away from reminding him of that. ANA: Oh, so that explains why he wrote all these stories like his most famous, "The Little Mermaid". That were sort of royalty positive or lifted up the idea of royalty. But he has as mentioned these two stories that seem to contradict that, which are "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "The Princess and the Pea". ALEX: Yeah, so starting with the Emperor's New Clothes, how does that criticize or make fun of royalty? ANA: Well, to start off, in the story, The emperor is a man who's literally obsessed with clothes and his outfits.

  • “The Oera Linda Book” and “The Snow Queen”: Two Destinies of One Myth
Journal of Siberian Federal University. Humanities & Social Sciences 1 (2015 8) 149-174 ~ ~ ~ УДК 304.444 “The Oera Linda Book” and “The Snow Queen”: Two Destinies of One Myth Ksenia V. Reznikova* Siberian Federal University 79 Svobodny, Krasnoyarsk, 660041, Russia Received 12.08.2014, received in revised form 04.11.2014, accepted 11.12.2014 This article features globalization in its two forms: natural globalization and artificial globalization. The need of natural globalization becomes more obvious taking into account the growth of challenge to the humankind. Artificial globalization nowadays is provided by westernization. Influence of globalization is more obvious at the mental than at the physical level, construction of the historical past and its mythologization played major roles in the course of globalization. Different relations between ideology and myth can be traced on the example of the destinies of two works, in which almost the same idea of the world order is represented. These are “The Oera Linda Book” and “The Snow Queen”. As a part of the study, seven invariants of the fairy tale by H.C. Andersen were analyzed. The carried-out analysis is based on a hypothesis that artificial globalization influences mythology of certain cultures, distorting it for own needs, resorting to different methods for different forms of the myth representation. So, myths in their pure form, demanded by the adult representatives of culture, are subjected to criticism, they are charged of falsification. The ultimate goal of such an influence is to bury the myth in oblivion as false. The myth that is represented in the reduced art form for children’s audience has the changed plot basis and in this new form it is subjected to maximum replication to substitute the original version in a period of time.

  • How Authored Children's Classics Retain Cultural
A PICTURE VS. A THOUSAND WORDS: HOW AUTHORED CHILDREN’S CLASSICS RETAIN CULTURAL RELEVANCY THROUGH BRITISH TELEVISION ADAPTATIONS by Sarah K. Crotzer A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in English Thesis Committee: Dr. Jennifer Marchant, Chair Dr. Martha Hixon Dr. Tom Strawman ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would not have completed this thesis without the support and assistance of a great many people. Drs. Jennifer Marchant and Martha Hixon were the best mentors I could have asked for: enthusiastic when I needed a push, patient when I asked a thousand questions at once, and willing to tell me when it was time to let it go. I had a whole team of “you will crush this” ninjas, led first and foremost by David LeDoux – his time is worth a thousand pounds a minute! I was also buoyed up and occasionally calmed down by Gary Gravely, Aaron Shapiro, Agapi Theodorou-Shapiro, and my minion, Tom Cruz. Finally, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to my parents, Barbara and Harry Crotzer, for listening to many, many speeches by Toad over the years. Perhaps now it’s time to take up motoring, instead. ii ABSTRACT Certain classic children’s stories have transcended the generations to become cultural icons over a century after their publication. The endless adaptation and reinvention that creates iconography can be both assistance and obstruction to the preservation of authored stories which, unlike classic oral folk tales, were originally composed to a specific and unchanging design. This thesis examines how certain classic stories – Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen,” Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows, and Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass – have been transmuted from set, authored texts to collections of representative elements with wide cultural applications.

  • Literature ”In Memory of the Snow Queen” – Hans Christian Andersen
FOLIA SCANDINAVICA VOL. 2 7 POZNAŃ 201 9 LITERATURE DOI: 10.2478/fsp - 2019 - 0006 ”IN MEMORY OF THE SNOW QUEEN ” – HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN RECALLED AND RETOLD A LDONA Z AŃKO Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań A BSTRACT . The main focus of the present paper is the so - called ”intertextual revision”, explored as one of the most recent and innovative strategies employed while reviving the legacy of the Danish fairy - tale classic Hans Christian Andersen. In order to illustrate t his practice, I discuss a short story entitled Travels with the Snow Queen (2001), by an American writer Kelly Link, which is a reworking of Andersen's world - famous fairy tale The Snow Queen (1844). Link's take on Andersen's tale represents one of the leading directions within revisionary fairy - tale fiction, inspired by feminism and gender criticism. The analysis is centered around the narrative strategies employed by the author in order to challenge the gender logic incorporated into Andersen's account, as well as the broader fairy - tale tradition it belongs to. 1. RECALLING CLASS ICS While looking into the so called ”Scandinavian - moments 1 ” in the history of world literature, it is hardly possible to pass over the legacy of Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish master of the literary fairy tale, whose unprecedented take on the fairy - tale genre still cannot be overestimated. The fairy tales, which granted Andersen his worldwide renown, appear as illustrative examples of what lies behind the notion ”classic literature”, encompassing works with a timeless, universal appeal. No matter how well - versed in the realms of literature we are, the name ”Andersen” surely 1 The expression refers to the title of a research p roject Scanmo ( The Scandinavian moment in world literature ), carried out at The Arctic University of Norway.
