Cines del Sur y Granada cumplen diez años compartiendo emociones, transmitiendo valores y acercando a las personas, en definitiva, diez años contribuyendo a construir un mundo mejor. he tenth edition of the Granada International Film Festival Cines del Sur marks the beginning of a new stage, because the Festival has returned following a necessary period of reflection. And it is starting this new stage prepared to give its all to the city of Granada and its T residents, with new venues and a broader programme. In 2017 the Festival returns with renewed strength because the Andalusian Ministry of Culture is now accompanied in its organisational activity by the City Council of Granada, the Provincial Government, the University of Granada, the EuroArab Foundation and the Board of Trustees of the Alhambra and Generalife. And along with these organisers, there are approximately twenty collaborating bodies that have joined forces to give the Festival greater solidity, reinforcing and intensifying its activity, which will be present in the city all year long. The calling of Cines del Sur is to give the people of Andalusia, and especially of Granada, the opportunity to see the very best films from other latitudes, acting as a point of connection among the cinemas of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Arab world. Alongside that priority is the Fes- tival’s commitment to cinema made here in this part of the world, with the series “Andalusians and the South”. With this Festival, Granada and Andalusia take a special look, once again, at culture, at cinema, as a way that individuals can get to know one PRESENTACIÓN another and peoples can come to understand each other. In this changing world, which has fewer borders every day, the films that are going to be screened and the parallel activities that are going to take place show us different realities and they make us a part of the challenges, the triumphs and the failures of other human beings, of other men and women, regardless of their skin colour, their religion or where they live. Cines del Sur and Granada are celebrating the Festival’s tenth year of sharing emotions, transmitting values and bringing people together. In short, 6 ten years of helping to build a better world. • Empathetic and Affective Circuits in Marcela Zamora Chamorro's María
Middle Atlantic Review of Latin American Studies, 2021 Vol. 5, No. 1, 25-41 Empathetic and Affective Circuits in Marcela Zamora Chamorro’s María en tierra de nadie and Tin Dirdamal’s De nadie Jared List Doane University [email protected] Using Roger Rouse’s (2002) theoretical conceptualization of migration as circuits and border, this essay analyzes two documentary Central American-Mexican films on migration, Tin Dirdamal’s De nadie (2005) and Marcela Zamora Chamorro’s María en tierra de nadie (2011). The films represent and engender circuits rooted in basic humanity and seek to recuperate a humanitarian model that establishes an ethics of relationality grounded in human rights as opposed to a necropolitical one derived from violence and consumption. Both documentaries become a form of resistance against a necropolitical system that consumes and destroys human life, through their ability to prompt viewers to recognize and apprehend the migrants’ situations. By employing testimonial and affective strategies, the films attempt emotional identification and affective transmission between the viewer and the films’ subjects, at the risk of replicating the very notion they are fighting. The films challenge viewers to comprehend the humanity shared by self and Other. Such a demand threatens the gore capitalist model of power that enables the violence, precarity, and vulnerability that migrants face during their journey.

A Season of Japanese Films by Contemporary Japanese Auteurs 10 February – 28 March 2012 : 7 venues in 7 cities in the UK I Just Didn‟t Do It, Dir Masayuki Suo, Japan, 2007 Following last year‟s successful Back To the Future: Japanese Cinema since the mid-90s season, this year‟s Japan Foundation touring film programme looks at narrative creativity in Japanese cinema, showcasing directors both young and emerging, such as Miwa Nishikawa and Takatsugu Naito, and the more established, such as Masayuki Suo (the director best-known for Shall We Dance). In recent years, Japanese cinema has been dominated by generic spin offs of media such as TV shows and manga, to generate an audience based on a pre-existing market. The nine films that have been chosen for this season however clearly demonstrate in fact the wealth of original writing and creativity evident in recent Japanese cinema. Having successfully forged and retained their own identities within what is one of the largest film markets in the world, these directors reject the “safe” formulaic film model and instead choose to pursue their own methods of expressing themselves through film. Audiences will be able to hear the individual directors‟ voices, whilst also being exposed to characteristics and techniques of some of the best examples of auteur directors from Japan. The film season is produced and organised by The Japan Foundation, and supported by the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation.
