Antecedentes A las 08:45 del martes 11 de setiembre del año 2001 un avión de American Airlines se estrelló contra el edificio norte de las llamadas “Torres Gemelas” del World Trade Center (WTC)1, en Nueva York; sólo 20 minutos más tarde un segundo avión, esta vez pertene- ciente a la compañía United Airlines, impactó el edificio sur. Para las 10:30 de ese día ambas torres se habían desplomado. Se sumaron a esos hechos el choque de un tercer avión, también de American Airlines, * Este artículo fue escrito inmediatamente después de los sucesos del 11 de setiembre de 2001. ERICK TORRICO que a las 09:50 destruyó una de las alas —la del acceso al helipuerto— del Pentágono, en Washington, y la explosión de un coche-bomba en las proximidades del Departamento de Estado, en esa misma capital. Inmediatamente después de que se estrellara la primera aeronave las televisoras esta- dounidenses comenzaron a emitir desde el lugar de los acontecimientos y captaron y transmitieron “en directo” el choque de la segunda aeronave y luego el derrumbe de las torres. Las principales cadenas nacionales y globales cubrieron lo que ocurría, inclusive utilizando las señales de otras estaciones, como en el caso de la ESPN, especializada en deportes, que retransmitió a ABC News Report, o en el de la TNT, más bien dedicada al entretenimiento, que reprodujo la emisión de CNN2. Varias redes comerciales y de es- pectáculos, como QVC y ShopNBC, optaron por suspender sus programaciones y otras teledifusoras locales neoyorquinas interrumpieron sus emisiones a causa de la destruc- ción de más de cien antenas que estaban instaladas en las “Torres Gemelas”3. Los medios de difusión de todo el mundo, y en particular los televisivos, se incorpora- ron muy pronto al seguimiento informativo de los sucesos y muchos de ellos, por varias horas, se convirtieron en simples repetidoras de las señales de televisión y radio genera- das principalmente por CNN. El sitio web de esta corporación noticiosa global se conges- tionó ante la demanda de información surgida y quedó bloqueado por más de hora y media. Paralelamente a las imágenes televisivas, reiteradas de modo insistente, y a las 3 0 0 reacciones recogidas de gobiernos, organismos internacionales, personajes importantes 2 E R o ciudadanos comunes, las fotografías y los despachos de las agencias transnacionales B M E I C de noticias comenzaron a recorrer los cuatro confines del planeta y muchísimos diarios I D entregaron ediciones extra. Al día siguiente no hubo periódico que no ofreciera informes 12 especiales al respecto y menos que no abriera su primera plana con la noticia y las fotos de S E N lo acontecido en Nueva York y Washington. O I C A I Mientras aquellos dramáticos hechos y las consiguientes espectaculares coberturas D E M informativas tenían lugar, el presidente estadounidense George W. Bush se encontraba de N I visita en una escuela en Florida, donde fue informado de la situación. Desde ese momento, el Servicio Secreto puso en marcha un operativo para proteger la vida de Bush, sus más inmediatos colaboradores y los principales miembros del Congreso, así como instruyó una “alerta máxima” en todas las embajadas y fuerzas militares de los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica (EU)4. Bush retornó a Washington siguiendo una ruta no habitual que le condujo previamente a dos bases militares de la fuerza aérea. Una vez en la Casa Blanca, Bush emitió un discurso en el que fijó las líneas básicas de definición e interpretación de lo sucedido, caracterizado en su perspectiva como una “guerra”. Los conceptos funda- mentales a que se refirió entonces fueron los siguientes5: ● “Actos terroristas” criminales han atacado el modo de vida y la suprema libertad estadounidenses. ● El “mal” ha cegado miles de vidas de gente común, de trabajadores, madres e hijos, amigos y vecinos. ● Estados Unidos ha sido blanco de ataques a causa de ser la “guía más luminosa de la libertad y la oportunidad en el mundo”. ● Estados Unidos ha visto hoy al “demonio”. ● Hay normalidad en el gobierno, fortaleza en las instituciones financieras y conti- nuidad en la apertura de la economía a los negocios. ● Se buscará a los responsables de los hechos para llevarlos ante la justicia. ● No se hará distinción entre los “terroristas” que cometieron los actos y quienes LA ESCENIFICACIÓN MEDIÁTICA DE LOS CONFLICTOS los protejan. ● Estados Unidos con sus amigos y aliados junto a los que quieren paz y seguridad en el mundo permanecen firmes para ganar la “guerra contra el terrorismo”. ● Estados Unidos ha derrotado a sus enemigos antes y también lo hará esta vez. ● Estados Unidos seguirá adelante en su defensa de la “libertad” y de “todo lo que es bueno y justo” en el mundo. ● “Que Dios bendiga a Estados Unidos”. Aunque en ningún momento las autoridades estadounidenses pudieron identificar con exactitud a los responsables de los hechos, pronto tejieron una argumentación que reconoció al millonario saudí Osama Bin Laden, un ex colaborador de los Estados Unidos asilado en Afganistán por el régimen fundamentalista musulmán de los talibán, como el principal sospechoso.     Rosso­Manoa­Nov. 2005­p. 1 Thirty Years After: American Vietnam War Literature in Italian Stefano Rosso (University of Bergamo) [email protected] (23.000 bytes, including notes and bibliography) It is well known that the American War in Vietnam had a great impact in Europe from 1966 up to the American withdrawal and the fall of Saigon. The Vietnam War triggered off an unprecedented anti­imperialist political awareness in Italy, too. Several books and essays on history and politics –some translated from English and French– 1 came out between the mid sixties and the early seventies and were the most important references on imperialism until the coup d’état against Salvador Allende and Chile’s legitimate government aided by the CIA in 1973. Seminars on the Vietnam War became frequent in schools and universities; newspapers and journals, not necessarily left­oriented, continued publishing articles critical of American intervention. The slogan “Yankees Go Home!”, chanted during the major Italian anti­imperialist mass demonstrations, came to mean only one thing: “Americans Get Out of Vietnam!” 2 In the publishing world, the so­called “Sessantotto”, the 1968 protest movement, was also characterized by the end of the “editori protagonisti” (protagonist publishers), such as Mondadori, Einaudi, Garzanti and, later, Feltrinelli, that is, the end of a long period – from the 1930s to the 1960s – dominated by a few publishers with a strong, articulated and recognizable cultural project involving intellectuals and thinkers. The late sixties saw, on the one hand, the birth of several small and very small publishers, and on the other, a strong process of concentration among the major companies.

TilE VIETNAM WAR ON TRIAL: TilE COURT-MARTIAL OF DR. HOWARD B. LEVY ROBERT N. STRASSFELD• This Article examines the history of a Vietnam War-era case: the court-martial of Dr. Howard B. Levy. The U.S. Army court-martialled Dr. Levy for refusing to teach medicine to Green Beret soldiers and for criticizing both the Green Berets and American involvement in Vietnam. Although the Supreme Court eventually upheld Levy's convicti on in Parkerv. Levy, ill decision obscures the political content of Levy's court-martial and its relationshipto the war. At the court-martialLe vy sought to defend himself by showing that his disparaging remarks about the Green Berets, identifying them as "killers of peasants and murderers of women and children," were true and that his refusal to teach medicine to Green Beret soldiers was dictated by medical ethics, given the ways in which the soldiers would misuse their medical knowledge.

    Postgraduate English www.dur.ac.uk/postgraduate.english Issue 27 September 2013 Editors Michael Shallcross and Avishek Parui Philip Roth and America’s Inexplicable War: Situating The Human Stain and American Pastoral within the Vietnam Canon Carlie Sorosiak University of Oxford 2 Philip Roth and America’s Inexplicable War: Situating The Human Stain and American Pastoral within the Vietnam Canon Carlie Sorosiak University of Oxford Postgraduate English, Issue 27, September 2013 Roth and the Vietnam Canon In a 1974 interview with Walter Mauro, later chronicled in Reading Myself and Others (1975) Philip Roth lambasts the ‘morally out of control’ American government of the Vietnam War years, a period he deems ‘the most “politicized” of [his] life’.1 Pontificating with historical retrospection, Roth describes 1960s and ‘70s America as a ‘foreign invader’ and recalls the sense of virulent ‘dispossession and powerlessness’ that typified the anti-war movement.2 That slippery subject of the Vietnam War most acutely manifests itself in American Pastoral (1997) and The Human Stain (2000), two novels in Roth’s American trilogy, which David Gooblar argues represents Roth’s first major (self- less) engagement with the American culture around him.3 Conscious breaks from his self- absorbed prose, American Pastoral and The Human Stain tackle the inexplicability of the Vietnam era through the microcosm of domestic experience, offering the vatic narrator Nathan Zuckerman’s metafiction as representation of the past.
