Scholarship on Roth has expanded in both range and complexity over recent years, propelled in large part by the critical esteem surrounding his major fiction of the 1990s. But comprehensive studies of Roth’s development rarely stray beyond certain prominent subjects, homing in on the author’s complicated meditations on Jewish identity, a perceived predilection for postmodern experimentation, and, more recently, his meditations on the powerful claims of the American nation. This study argues that a preoccupation with the efficacies of fiction—probing its epistemological purchase, questioning its autonomy, and examining the shaping force of its contexts of production and circulation— roots each of Roth’s major phases and drives various innovations in his approach. -

RossoManoaNov. 2005p. 1 Thirty Years After: American Vietnam War Literature in Italian Stefano Rosso (University of Bergamo) [email protected] (23.000 bytes, including notes and bibliography) It is well known that the American War in Vietnam had a great impact in Europe from 1966 up to the American withdrawal and the fall of Saigon. The Vietnam War triggered off an unprecedented antiimperialist political awareness in Italy, too. Several books and essays on history and politics –some translated from English and French– 1 came out between the mid sixties and the early seventies and were the most important references on imperialism until the coup d’état against Salvador Allende and Chile’s legitimate government aided by the CIA in 1973. Seminars on the Vietnam War became frequent in schools and universities; newspapers and journals, not necessarily leftoriented, continued publishing articles critical of American intervention. The slogan “Yankees Go Home!”, chanted during the major Italian antiimperialist mass demonstrations, came to mean only one thing: “Americans Get Out of Vietnam!” 2 In the publishing world, the socalled “Sessantotto”, the 1968 protest movement, was also characterized by the end of the “editori protagonisti” (protagonist publishers), such as Mondadori, Einaudi, Garzanti and, later, Feltrinelli, that is, the end of a long period – from the 1930s to the 1960s – dominated by a few publishers with a strong, articulated and recognizable cultural project involving intellectuals and thinkers. The late sixties saw, on the one hand, the birth of several small and very small publishers, and on the other, a strong process of concentration among the major companies. -

ISSN 1799-2591 Theory and Practice in Language Studies, Vol. 3, No. 2, pp. 313-317, February 2013 © 2013 ACADEMY PUBLISHER Manufactured in Finland. doi:10.4304/tpls.3.2.313-317 The American Jewishness in Philip Roth’s Fiction—The Thematic Study of American Pastoral Ting Gao Shandong University of Finance and Economics, Ji Nan, China Abstract—As one of the most prominent living Jewish writers in contemporary American Literature, Philip Roth (1933- ) has been producing excellent works despite his 80-year-old age. He is a frequent subject of Chinese researchers, but among those literary studies of Philip Roth’s fiction, Jewishness is not a subject to be discussed much. One of the reasons is that as an ethnic term, Jewishness is ambiguous in perception. As Roth persists with his American stance in interviews, literary discussions on his Jewishness seems to be more ambiguous. Nevertheless, Roth does not deny his Jewish root, and Roth devotes his whole life writing with the subject of American Jewish life. In view of this, there is a Jewishness that exists in his fiction which best reflects his ethnic ethos as well as the characteristic position he holds as a Jew and American writer. In analyzing one of the Roth’s most important works in late-twentieth century, namely, American Pastoral, this thesis aims to put forward the idea that Jewishness exhibited in this fiction is Americanized Jewishness. The pastoral, as a sensibility, has long been an important part of the southern identity, for the mythos of the South long depended upon its association with a new “Garden of the World” image, a paradise dependent upon slave labor and a racial hierarchy to sustain it. -

Wednesday, September 4, 2013 | Volume 2 | Issue 67 Kenneth Bonert: Balancing Insight, Poetry and a Ripping Good Story Kenneth Bonert's fiction has appeared in McSweeney's, Grain and the Fiddlehead, and his journalism has appeared in the Globe and Mail, the National Post and other publications. His story "Packers and Movers" was shortlisted for Canada's Journey Prize. Born in South Africa, Bonert is the grandson of Lithuanian immigrants. He lives in Toronto. Prior to this novel you wrote some short stories. How did they prepare you to write your first novel? When I began to write fiction, I wrote many short, fantastical, allegorical pieces in the style of Kafka. I experimented with language and form; some of these came close to being published but ultimately were not. I gradually began to write longer, more realistic stories drawn more directly from my own life's experiences. This wasn't a conscious or strategic decision, just a progression that flowed naturally from the work. photo: Richard Dubois The first story I published was about a Jewish family leaving South Africa, set in the late '80s. I think the story worked because the characters were very real to me; the story showed how wider political forces were squeezing one family, moulding the life of the young protagonist. It had a harsh energy and raw feel to it that I liked. I had become very interested in voice and dialogue and I began to see the potential in making use of the slangy mishmash of languages that I had grown up with. -

TilE VIETNAM WAR ON TRIAL: TilE COURT-MARTIAL OF DR. HOWARD B. LEVY ROBERT N. STRASSFELD• This Article examines the history of a Vietnam War-era case: the court-martial of Dr. Howard B. Levy. The U.S. Army court-martialled Dr. Levy for refusing to teach medicine to Green Beret soldiers and for criticizing both the Green Berets and American involvement in Vietnam. Although the Supreme Court eventually upheld Levy's convicti on in Parkerv. Levy, ill decision obscures the political content of Levy's court-martial and its relationshipto the war. At the court-martialLe vy sought to defend himself by showing that his disparaging remarks about the Green Berets, identifying them as "killers of peasants and murderers of women and children," were true and that his refusal to teach medicine to Green Beret soldiers was dictated by medical ethics, given the ways in which the soldiers would misuse their medical knowledge.
